In the 60s and 70s, Mexican publisher La Prensa not only go the rights to reprint Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man title but also got permission to create their own original issues that they would insert between the reprints. These issues have never been translated into English or reprinted here in the United States. This episode looks at their history, the techniques of their artist, José Luis González Durán. These books focused heavily on Peter Parker's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy.

Mexico's version of Green Goblin doesn't seem like a bad guy. I mean he took Aunt May to the hospital.
He seems weirdly dopey, like a very confused good guy trying to act the way he thinks a bad guy would behave, but he's just way too nice. "I'll go over to Peter's house and _scare_ him! Mwahaha!"
Green Goblin injured Aunt May was why she went to the hospital or did they change that part of the story? So not such a nice guy either.

In fact spider-man was popular here in Mexico for the same reason he was in the United States. A young low-class boy raised by an elderly relative. Forced to work to support his family, and having to struggle with his daily responsibilities to spend time with his friends or with the person he loves.
That description was the case for most of the 70s and 80s kids and teenagers of our country. And they had a fun escapism from their daily life with someone like them who also had fascinating adventures as a superhero.

C) On why Spider-Man is -still- popular in México?, your hypothesis could not be wrong, but I would add that we Mexicans are really really dramatic and is not strange that we empathize with Peter as character with all this...let's say... catholic's guilt?... I dare to say that is why Spider-Man and Batman are the must popular heroes down in México.

Characters like Batman or Spider-Man are more universally relatable due to their street - level and commentary on human condition. A character like Captain America will never be that popular here just because of the obvious cultural difference that can be made evident right from the beginning just by looking at his costume.

I used to think that but he's pretty popular nowadays outside the US thanks to the movies and how he also has much of what makes Spidey and Bats so relatable despite the enemies that he faces (I mean, for that matter Batman fights aliens and threats to reality constantly).
@@MrLCGO Well yeah, the movies have changed the game but even with them I don't think Captain America comics are selling in Mexico better than other characters. Spider-Man has changed too. The early years his stories were very down to earth while now there's more fantastic nonsense. Look at the spiderverse movie, way more escapist than those early Stan Lee comics.
I think the reason why Spider-Man is so popular with the Mexican people and why they relate to him so much is because, even though he is American, he is seen as a regular joe from anywhere, a teenager who made himself, suffered a lot and helps people because he thinks is the responsibility that came with his powers after the Uncle Ben tragedy, not because is the American way to do things. A lot of people in Mexico don't even give characters like Superman or Captain America a chance is because they see them as American symbolisms, which they are, of course, but they rather don't see beyond that, and if there's something that Mexicans hate like nothing else (but won't admit) is America. Trust me, when they say gringo, they say it with despise.

I think a major reason why Spider-Man is popular here in Mexico, and pretty much everywhere, is because his character and motivation are so universal. He isn't tied to any big expensive government projects, or alien organizations or the like. He's also not devoted to any particular political or religious institution. He's a very bright and upright, but otherwise unremarkable kid who wants to stop people from getting hurt. There's no reason why an identical hero couldn't have popped up in Norway, or Botswana, or Venezuela or New Guinea. I personally suspect that's why so many viewers were annoyed by that movie scene where he's standing with the U.S. flag in the background. That works for Captain America, Nick Fury or Superman, but it doesn't quite work as well for ole Petey.

Yeah... Here's the thing... In Mexico there was a time when hand drawn Porn Comics where a common thing that you could find with more ease than the actual comics... And well... Looks wise, Gwen fills all the little details of what made the female leads of those porn magz appealing to male demographic, from the color of her eyes to her body proportions... So yeah... No doubt she was so popular, specially since looking at some of the covers I feel that at times they where trying to make it seem like the comics had a bit more mature themes inside.... Heck, when I was like 10 the Sunday Newspaper came with a comic section that had half page mini stories, around 8 or so... MJ was Spidey's main lady there and I swear there where many issues where she would be wearing nothing but a towel or some really skimpy clothes... Also she had a huge butt.

In Brazil, there was something called the “Brazillian Secret Wars”. Basically, the original Secret Wars event arrived early in Brazil due to the toys that came along. Problem was, a lot of characters and status quo changes, like Storm’s look, hadn’t happened in the Brazillian release yet. That led to an all-out reestructoring of the event, Without charachters beign removed and plot points changing to fit where the comics storylines were in Brazil.
I heard they was also brazillian exclusive comics of the Original X-men.

I’m a Mexican and of course I knew of this original stories that were made here, but I didn’t get the chance to read them because it’s before my time, I don’t think spidey was a hit in Mexico because of the masks aspects you mention, I think it was great back then in Mexico the same way it was in the US, and that was just because he is a great character with real problems like any person would have and of course his powers and costume were pretty original at the time.
I really enjoy seeing and listening to you reading this mexican story of spiderman and you translated pretty well all the dialogues.

Spanish here, and I can confirm this was translated almost perfectly.
The only mistakes I have to point out are "sacar", which is "take out" and not "scare" and "recobrar el conocimiento", which is reffered in this context as "recovering from being fainted", not about the knowledge, that was a very literal translation.
I also like how your pronunciation was on point, although sometimes sounded like a drunken Russian.
Awesome! I always liked that the Spider Man 2099 comic paid tribute to Mexico by having this future Spider Man base his outfit design on a Day of the Dead costume! I wonder if this version of Spider Man was reprinted and popular in Mexico.
It has never been reprinted here unfortunately. The first thirty issues with Peter David and Rick Leonardi are excellent.

Hi! I love your channel, and this episode was no exception! I'm from Mexico and I'd add to your explanation to Spidey's popularity that we usually love underdogs down here. Another example of this is Top Cat, who only had one season of the cartoon made in the US and wasn't particularly popular but here we loved the fact that he's kind of a scoundrel, always breaking the law and seeing to himself and, in second term, his crew. The show had a lot of reruns here, for DECADES! I'm not sure if it still airs from time to time.
About Peter getting married and having aunt May living with them, it's very common for most Mexican families to have the parents or in-laws living under the same roof, creating very big and tightly knit families. Well, it was more common in the past, not so much nowadays, even though there are still some cases in which it happens.
Anyway, I wasn't aware of this original Mexican Spidey comics, I guess they'll be pretty hard to find. Something similar happened with the TMNT Adventures comic, the one originally published by Archie Comics. It was reprinted and translated to Spanish, but after a short while they started creating original stories. And boy, were those some far out stories! I actually own a few of those comic books, I liked them a lot even though they were nothing like the cartoon.
I'll make sure to keep reading comics, you just keep analyzing them in this great show!

Since you're on that vibe, did you know that in 1968, brazilian publisher GEP produced 10 original X-Men stories to fill in space in the brazilian edition of the team? The stories were written by Gedeone Malagola and penciled by Walter Silva Gomes and we're republished 4 years ago. Malagola said Marvel authorized those stories.
Great video! I did know about "new" stories written only for mexican readers, but I never read or even seen one of them.
And yeah, your hypotesis might be right about why we mexicans love so much Spider-Man. I mean, my dad liked El Santo a lot when he was a child so he started collecting Spiderman books when he was older, but my mom also read and liked them, so I'd add that the Spiderman stories have a lot in common with how mexican telenovelas are written. My mom loves telenovelas, so all the melodrama and love triangles from Spiderman might be a factor too.
I saw some issues of this on a local Toy store, should've gotten them. Btw your translation is spot on!
I'm Mexican btw, I couldn't tell you why Spider-man became so popular in here tho. I simply grew up with the character and fell in love with him, just like most of us I think.

Mexican aren't the only who have made their own comics of popular american super heroes.
In france we have an original storie with the Silver Surfer, who was more popular in France then in the US, it was publish in two issue of the comics reprint Nova, unfortunatly several right problem forbiden the author do go beyond 2 issue, and so it was quicly cancel, John Buscema himself still praise the artwork tough.
I konw that the India publisher Raj comics sometime do crossover with american heroes with their own heros, one of them was a special issue where Nagraj (Raj comics poster boy.) team up with Spider-man, Batman and Superman; but the comics isn't very good since the three heroes act OOC killing villain wihout mercy.
Also I think Indonesia comics have made not one but two illegal comics on Spider-man, one of them it is a woman who wear the costume.
That a topic that should be more explore.

If you liked Mexican Spiderman you would love Mexican Blackhawk (El Halcón Negro), also published by La Prensa when they lost the reprint license due to Quality bankrupcy and DC licensing the character (but not the name) to La Prensa´s rival Novaro. Thus, Mexico had two Blackhawk competing collections: Novaro´s El Halcón De Oro (Goldenhawk) reprinting the DC owned material, and La Prensa´s El Halcón Negro continuing Quality´s Blackhawk with original material with a go go twist, lots of aliens, girls in bikini and pop art references.

As a Mexican I approve! Nice spanish and great video. I actually met Jose Luis Duran at a comic convention in Toluca as we are from the same city. He is a Toluqueño just like I am! Though it was a shame he wasn't doing sketches because the pages he was selling were too expensive for me, even the cheapest ones, because I was a high school student at the time. Still was nice meeting him. Was an okay guy. And the reason they gave Peter and most of the other characters black hair, was to make it feel more local, as we mexicans, are more prominently black haired.
I really hope there's some fan effort to translate the exclusive issues in the future! Or an official complete collection book would be great!

I'm a Mexican artist and when i was pre-teen, i had the honor to attend an art class imparted byJosé Luis Durán, the artist of the mexican version of spidey. I had some prints of his covers and i find it kind of funny that until now, the USA is getting to know this even existed, It's crazy!
Unfortunately, you're right, even if Durán is an amazing artist he takes a lot of short-cuts, and i think he was heavily inspired by Kirby and Romita. The short cuts might be because he actually worked in a lot of stuff at the time: "Spiderman", "El Pantera", some mexican fighters issues and comic strips for the newspaper, but to be honest, I don't remember well the chronology of his work.
Anyways, i loved the video... Brought me back to the days i wanted to become a comic book artist, now i'm mostly a writer...
P.S: Saying "¡Cielos!" Is like saying "Jeez"

C B Cebulski, Marvel's current EIC, did notice the news about "Sorprendente Hombre Araña" and "Arañita" and said he would look into it. I don't know if anything will come out of this, but if they do reprint it I would buy it on a heartbeat.
CB Cebulski is a competent editor who before that was president of a branch of Marvel in Asia, he help introduce a lot of asian artist to work with Marvel.
I sure he will try to make this comics printed in english.

Yes, as many Mexican commenters have said, We love melodrama. Mexico's biggest entertainment export are telenovelas and back in the day melodramatic themed comics were very popular in Mexico, such as "Memin Pinguin" (which to American eyes can be a bit racist, by the way) or "Maria Isabel".
Maybe you would be interested in researching Mexican comic superheroes like Kaliman, Fantomas or Chanoc. They can be really fun to read.

Wow, impressive Spanish skills! I have a couple of German reprints of Spider-Man. One where he first fights the Jury, and one where he fights Styx & Stone and Cardiac. In Germany he is called Der Spinne. The reprints seems identical to the US comic. Although the German comic is much larger than the US version. It is interesting to see popular comics in other countries and how they are adapted to those audiences.
Like I said before I know France have done the same thing with SIlver surfer.

Robert Schmidt Ah, my apologies. I forgot the proper gender conjugation for "the". Obviously I am less than fluent in German and so I don't really know the accuracy of the translation. Sad that it was terrible. I do remember the art was the same as the American comic though.
Yes, they were just reprints actually, so no extra issues as in Mexico, still, translation was bad, it was at times hard to fathom what went on, and sometimes it was taken out of context. For example Captain America was smirking and looking down on the Sowjets instead of speaking Russian which he does in the original issue. ;)

I used to pick up comic books in Mexico every time I went to Tijuana back in the 80s and thought it was funny how all Marvel Comics at the time were called Hombre-Arana. Didn't matter if it was Avengers, Fantastic Four, or Spider-Man.
Most likely you speak of "El hombre araña presenta" which was used to reprint Secret wars, John Byrne's runs at Fantastic four and Avengers, Dark Phoenix saga, etc.

Hey. Greetings from México. Great video. Learned a lot! And yes. You're reading too much into it. Spiderman is popular in México because Spiderman is cool.
I'm from Mexico and I grew up reading Mexican reprints though not those in particular that came before my time. I don't think Spider-Man was particularly more popular in Mexico than he was in the states at the time. The thing that happened here is that publishers would reprint a bunch of titles but whenever economic crisis struck (a periodic occurrence) they would be forced to cut down their line of titles until Spider-Man was the only title left. So in 1981 we had Fantastic four, Spider-Man, Avengers and Daredevil but by late 1982 only Spider-Man survived and carried on alone for many years. Another factor is that his publication history and continuity has always been rock solid here. His comics were on the newsstands on time while most of comics from other publishers weren't. Characters like Superman or Batman have always been reprinted here but back in the seventies and eighties their publishers weren't as solid or consistent with continuity and schedule as Spider-Man was. Today, you could put together a full Spider-Man collection out of Mexican reprints, and even with the option to pick from different publishers. You cannot do that with any other character. He was/is the most popular character in Mexico just because he's the only one that has had a good publication history.

When I started reading comics, Editorial Vid was the company that published Spiderman and other Marvel properties like the X-Men. Back in that days (early 90's) Editorial Vid did their own covers for most of the issues. I don't know the reason why, maybe because was common for them to put more than one comic in a single issue. So most Spiderman comics from that time have their own original cover in Mexico.
As a mexican and Spidey fan I'm amazed, didn´t know a "mexican spider-verse" existed :-P Wasn´t born then but I got to read Spiderman in spanish printed by other editorials. Great work and cheers form Veracruz!

Your translation was excellent, and as to your theory as to why Spider-Man is so popular in Mexico, I think it comes to down the same traits that's made Spidey universally loved BUT visually, I think your theory is correct :) I've had the same thought you had as a mexican american myself. Spidey has a mask similar to a luchador mask, especially the eyes! The spider-man eyes are shaped similar to those of Mexican luchador icon El Santo so you are on to something my friend. Great video!

Great video, I didn't know about any of this and I love these kind of stories in the industry. That artist drew a beautiful Gwen, too bad about not being sure what stuff was truly his or "heavily inspired" by other artists. While I don't read comics anymore, I truly miss art styles like Romita's, Adams, George Perez, Byrne and so on; though there are still more recent artists that I find very cool such as Capullo and Sean Murphy.
