Ever since I watched Avatar Pandora has fascinated me. I do often look at the stars and films like Avatar do make me look closer, and wonder if something as fascinating and magical as that could actually exist out there, somewhere.
Earth in the past (and now) had some amazing animals that likely inspired the ones in Avatar. Giant birds, giant bugs, massive sea creatures and flying reptiles. And this is just on our own planet.
People who think tolkein has much better worldbuilding have no idea about the sheer scale of the lore of avatar(mostly because it wasn't explored in the movie). The worldbuilding in avatar is so intricate and well thought out that once you get into it, middle earth feels childish in comparison.

Imagine this planet was in the star wars universe during the clone wars, and the CIS invaded to mine the Unobtainaium. It would REALLY suck, being part of the clone legion going in after them.
While the imagined concept of planet Pandora is amazingly beautiful, it just can't exist, sadly. An earth sized and environed planet orbiting that close to a gas giant parent would be so ripped and torn by tidal forces, it would be a volcanic nightmare. Any oceans on it would have tides hundreds of feet high every day, and there would be no night-time darkness as depicted in the movie....whenever the gas giant was in the night sky, it would be so bright it would be like daylight all around. The only actual night-time darkness would be on those one or two days during the orbit where the giant was in it's "new" phase. Ahhh, Nature is so Cruel!....
It could be orbiting it far away the same distance Ganymede orbits jupiter...Ganymede doesn't experience much tidal heating or radiation as compared to Calisto or others but you are right the oceans would be a nightmare because they don't need much tidal forces to act up and it will also never experience darkness.

Pandora, the perfect metaphor of our own biosphere here on Earth... The problem with humans is that they think as humans - anthropocentrically, thus unable to see the intricate connections between all life on planet Earth. . Avatar carries a strong social message to its audience, it perfectly depicts the avaricious nature of most humans, their exploitation of resources, to the point where they need to obtain the unobtainable, whilst indiscriminently and wantonly destroying another planet's rich and varied ecosystems. Just as they did on their own homeworld. . This is one reason why humans must never be allowed to leave the Sol system. Not that its likely in anycase, for most, if not all eukaryotic organisms are more than likely experiencing their final century, if not decades of evolution on this beleaguered Earth.
A former co-worker saw the film when it first came out. He said he didn't care for it. He said it was basically a "cowboys and Indians" movie, and the Indians won. I thought his remark very odd, but as the next couple of years progressed he became increasingly fascinated by the idea of an apocalyptic race war and became more and more right wing radicalized. He got really weird. I retired from there and chose to never have to contact him again.
There are amazing things on Earth too. I think someone should make a movie with the exact story of Avatar except that the invading race is from Alpha Centauri and the indigenous people are humans. The mineral they are looking for is gold (also a very good conductor).

No they have a much deeper connection with the planet. Like Grace says, it's a neural system that is highly symbiotic. Natural calamities wouldn't happen on a large scale and everything that does, is going to be balanced. Take the dinosaurs for example, they were riding high until the asteroid. And now what can humans do, if the same asteroid suddenly makes its way towards us? Humans are not the masters of their own destiny lol. They seek to develop, by destroying and putting at stake what delicate balance they have, and in the scramble for power eventually lose their own ecosystem. The Na'avi life is so biologically complex that it's very difficult to comprehend. Watch the scene in the movie where Jake explains how the Na'avi "sees" not just physically, but also in some other way oblivious to humans. They only want to maintain their delicate ecosystem and with the natural cycle in process, they'll keep it going longer than what humans can ever possibly will, what with our hopes of being "an interplanetary species"
@@alaster1403 navi are restricted to a single planet. humans are not, humans have space travel and means to survive even on hostile environments. asteroid example therefore doesnt apply. as for navi and their connection to the planet let me quote the movie: "our great mother doesnt take sides, she only cares about the balance of life" -> sure eywa joins for final battle but only for self-preservation. if navi got more populous at some point, i bet eywa would cull their population numbers like and omnipotent dictator controling every aspect of the entire planet.
