There’s really more to this exercise than meets the eye: first, not only it helps speed up your fretting hand but also it builds coordination between your fretting and picking hands. Second, if you could replicate the same exercise pattern on the same natural notes on the D & G strings as well as on the E & A strings over time you have memorized also, albeit unconsciously, all the natural notes on the fretboard, which is equally important with, if not more important than, building up speed. This is EPIC. Great thanks!
My son is a sound engineer for Sweetwater Sound and is going to be helping me along as I'm newbie to guitar at 53, but I think I may include your videos into my lessons as well.
Sweetwater is amazing, for sure. I am from Fort Wayne originally and visited nearly every 2 - 3 weeks during 2019 - 2022, and visit when I can when I go back down to Fort Wayne. That place is incredible. Learned a lot from internet lessons. It can be done. I am older than you and the past three years learning through RUclips and online lessons has been transforming. I took guitar lessons in my late 20s and 30s and I have learned more from RUclips and online lessons by far. We all just did not have this available to us in the 1990s and my learning was slow to say the least.
My fingers are WAY too small to do the 1st to 5th fret stuff w/o discomfort. But this is still a nice way of looking at the fretboard and getting something into the routine. I hate most youtube "instruction" vids because they are just clickbait most of the time. This is nice and clear.
@@kenjifugimoto My fingers are small enough (not to mention old enough lol ) that I cannot play that part w/o shifting my thumb. However, that is NOT going to stop me from practicing this :) The rest of it is easy peasy, I've got a decent amount of speed with that.
Starting on C Phrygian with Am as the framework , ascend through the scale positions lydian mixolydian aeolian Locrian Ionian Ending on Dorian ☮️ great lesson,
I’ve played guitar for some years but am looking to get better with fast notes on the electric guitar. This really broke down the left and right hand! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing. Been working on this the past hour. I have a terrible memory, but it's neat to see when muscle memory kicks in and I don't even think about it any more. Thank you!
I started prqcticing this superb method and i keep moving to lower strings with the same pattern. Now my fingers are running every where so smoothly and effortlessly just like Leo messi on the field. Thank you Sir
Increasing speed, dexterity, is such an early phase of musical development. Sure, you’re young (as a musician) so do this, be encouraged. However, having something personally meaningful, or even soulful to utter musically comes with maturity, and, for most, some heartbreak. Be brave, go for love, fail, and keep playing through it all. That’s how we go from being a mechanic to an artist. (response to “ Practice This DAILY For Lightning FAST fingers!! ⚡️)
I can play the heck out of electric guitar! Acoustic guitars are a lot different, looking for acoustic guitar lessons. Thank you Eddie, your lessons are great for a electric guitar enthusiast.
Eddie, many thanks and much respect for posting this exercise. Using this exercise is sheer magic! It's allowed me to unlock certain parts of my brain that have in turned allowed my ears and fingers to "find" notes on the fretboard of songs and solos that I've been trying to master for years. This exercise is incredible! It's like a key to mastering the fretboard. Thank you!
It makes things much easier if we know what these notes are and what they represent .without knowing why I am hitting these particular notes it is impossible to play by rote.
You're essentially playing the A minor/C major scale which means the seven notes that don't have sharps/flats. So for this exercise you'll be playing the following sextuplets: C,D,E,F,G,A; D,E,F,G,A,B; E,F,G,A,B,C; F,G,A,B,C,D; G,A,B,C,D,E; A,B,C,D,E,F; B,C,D,E,F,G; C,D,E,F,G,A.
Really great video Eddie! Thanks!! Thank goodness for the pause button though, so people like me have to go back when needed, for me it's almost all the time when I have to press the pause button and I'm 51, going on 52 in a few months! 😂😂
Hello Eddie, I understand the benefit of economy picking when you switch from second to first string (within one block of 6 notes), but when you finish with first block (last note on first string), and you have to switch from first string to second (to begin a new block) isn't it more natural to alternate pick? I know it will break the 2x Down-Up-Down pattern but it looks like the most economical way to play this would be Up-Down-Up (on second string) and then continue with Down-Up-Down on first string? That way we would be ready to start with Up pick the new block of 6 notes. Correct me if I'm wrong...Thanks for lesson, it it very useful.
Beside that, when I decrease the speed of your video it is obviously that you are not using DUD DUD picks all the time but you are doing UDU on 2nd string and then DUD on 1st string and repeat...which again I found more natural...
I'm a year later than you, but I just made this same comment...and I agree....I will work on this, but I'll use straight alternate picking as the problem you mention to me is worse than the problem the first instance of economy picking solves...
