I know it’s pretty much impossible to experience now, but back when you bought a new CoD game, maybe up until MW3 2011- BO2, it was just understood and accepted that you played the campaign before trying multiplayer. Multiplayer wasn’t the main draw, the campaign was and multiplayer was an extension of what you did after finishing the campaign. We all talked about the campaign in school after each new game came out. That being said; I remember being with my older cousin, up in a foggy cabin in the Blue Mountains, NSW, on a really cold June night. Our parents were in bed and we were playing the WaW campaign in co-op. Just as we finished the last level, I remember downing the last sip of my hot chocolate when the screen faded into Zombies mode and we were taken completely by surprise. Scariest night of my life. Oh my gosh I didn’t sleep for the next two nights it was amazing.
I love when games and mocies that are not really that of horror genre, delve into horror for brief intervals. Another great example to me, is the 43rd mission in MGSV, where the laboratory gets hit by a new virus outbreak. Also the part in Uncharted 1, where you run into the creepy wendigo thingy in the stranded submarine.
I didn't play the og Farcry, but I did play its linear console remake thing called Farcry Instincts and remember halfway through the game they make you fight these weird monster things that scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.
Halo 2 Arbiter levels scared tf out of me as a kid because of the sudden change from fighting heretics to fighting the flood and just how tight the corners are in the heretic levels
Halo - There's one room where you come in on the upper level and find the Covenant fighting the Flood on the floor below. I was disappointed that after helping the Covenant destroy the Flood, they started shooting at me. It would have been a really nice touch if they had looked up, then just run off and disappeared. Just a simple acknowledgement that I had helped them, and there were more important things to worry about. It kind of bugged me because it showed the simplicity of the much hyped AI, in that they simply resume their default behavior when there are no other enemies to fight.
@lurkerrekrul that would have been a neat little touch. Then again, they would probable be too overwhelmed with fear and adrenaline to not shoot at everything.

I felt so betrayed lowkey when the Flood came and took away my goofy little military shooter from me. No more little squads of dudes to dick around with, just me and the uncertainty of whether would be fighting alongside anyone ever again, or alone for the rest of the run with nobody but Cortana in my ear, and this dubious floating indestructible orb and his army of sentries that are totally not gonna turn on me. That said, I did end up pressing on, and C.E. is still one of my favorite all time games for what it did, but I will say that first third or so before the Flood comes crawling from out the cracks, does a LOT of the heavy lifting there, ha.

You should look up a video titled "Why are old Halo games creepy". He perfectly explains why eight year-old me was creeped out in between firefights in CE even before the Flood reveal.
Even if it is not action, The new order mod for HoI4 really created some of the most unnerving novel horror ever in videogames history for being a simple strategy game.
Then there's fallout and it's dlcs the worst you can fight is a deathclaw and the scariest is one attacking you when you're not expecting it. The Sierra madre is just non stop scares due to lack of resources, the explosive collar mechanic and from the mist to the infinite perception ghost people this for me was the atmosphere of ravenholm to the stress of halo, the best part of the dlc? To kill a ghost you need to decapitate it or just destroy it's limbs with all the scarce resources you have around you, I am telling you in the villa you get the feeling of being watched all the time and the traps don't help at all.
What about A Hat in Time and Queen Venessa's Manor. Sure it's not an action game but it's a game that goes full horror out of nowhere. Yes Subcon Forest is a spooky themed level but it's in a cute and jokey way. It doesn't get real until the manor.
Idk if it's the lighting but man your sclerae are yellow x_x (eye white) If it's not the lighting, I recommend getting it checked out asap, it could be jaundice
I think all action games should do a horror level/stage/mission. If only because they aren't strictly horror games i think those levels are always the best. Imagine a PT style horror level in every action game.
343 Guilty Spark is the best level in Halo history specifically BECAUSE it's such a shocking twist. Keep in mind, the plot of Halo: Combat Evolved is about solving the mystery of the eponymous ringworld's purpose whilst preventing the Covenant from activating it, so once you discover The Flood, you realise everyone be they Human or Alien is in way over their head. One surprise horror moment I have fond memories of is the third act of Naughty Dog's seminal action-adventure game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, where it turns out that El Dorado isn't actually a "city of gold", but rather a supernatural statue that turns people into zombies and monsters, Dead Space style. It's so unexpected, but it was a ton of fun to fend off tribes of zombies in South American tombs and it _sucks_ that I sold my PS3 and my copy of Uncharted as Sony didn't bother to port the Nathan Drake Collection to PC in favour of a new collection featuring 4 and the spin-off. What a bummer.
@@Centrifewgi Come to think of it, the mid-late 2000s were basically a golden era for both sudden genre shifts in action games and action-horror titles: The first few F.E.A.R. games (namely 1, Extraction Point and F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, tho Perseus Mandate does have its moments of brilliance), Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, The Suffering, Doom 3, Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, Cold Fear... Good times all around. Sucks that Resident Evil 5 turned out to be a tedious actionised sell-out that convinced other major developers to sell out, because back then people knew how to pull off that balancing act of both extremes, be they for portions of a game or the whole package.
I remember on the ps vita I was playing resistance burning sky’s, long story short I was in the aliens mother ship and it was so scary because these little creatures would come out of nowhere and that was getting to the end of the game and I could never continue, and the game is just a action game 😭

I wonder what you consider Halo: ODST. Like the games in this video have random horror in a mostly normal game, where ODST has this mix of somber semi-horror that then goes back to action, then returning to somber semi-horror
@andrewcullen2527 interesting. I'd say personally that I don't think ODST exudes any horror. The night time map is indeed somber, but it's more lonely and atmospheric in a noir esque fashion. As much as I like that game, walking around the city as a regular human should have been scary.

For anybody wo is cared shitless from Wolfenstein Young Blood, I highly recommend *SNIPER ELITE NAZI ZOMBIE ARMY 1&2* (1 is better because 2 is a bit of a downgrade in all aspects, especially ahtmosphere)

Flood levels in Halo are better than Halo 1, but that intro in 1 is sooo gewd!
