  • In this episode I respond to Alan at Marque Restore in Coventry who, having seen my previous efforts to restore and polish the engine aluminium components kindly offered to show me how the professionals do it. A very interesting and enjoyable experience.

Graham did a fantastic job on his first time on a professional polishing machine. They are scary machines and Graham was fearless, not many people can manage that. I wonder if I should produce a series of instructional videos on polishing?

Thanks Alan, it was a very memorable experience for me and yes I’m sure a series of instructional videos would be appreciated!

Such a craftsman at his work. Just wish he would wear a mask and have decent dust extraction.

Alan is a real pro and has an excellent RUclips channel of his own. I think he and his employees normally have the appropriate PPE.

That proves it - I need to retire my DIY polisher and outsource.

It’s certainly a difficult skill to master! If you’ve been getting reasonable results I wouldn’t give up.

Wow Alan is a hero on the wheels. Redefining the definition of polishing at 80 grit! I believe this is also the method of repairing steel before rechroming?

Nice, but if I were this gentleman, I'd use some hearing protection

This really is a craft. In the wrong hands, those machines could create a catastrophe!

Yes, I found the linishing in particular very difficult. Alan was keeping a close eye on me and did most the work and especially the hard bits!

haha, I know I would be sanding far back from that spinning wheel of death ;-) I would be guaranteed to loose skin
If you were to mic the part before and after, how much thickness would you lose?

It’s quite intimidating and takes a bit of getting use to standing next to those machines. Alan and his team a hugely skilled, so impressive!
