- It’s a big week for college graduates but some students at Cal State Long Beach are upset over the school’s decision to not allow seniors to walk across the stage or have their names read aloud for graduation.
The issue has inspired thousands of students to sign a petition over the decision.
The graduation ceremony at Cal State Long Beach historically was held in the big blue pyramid auditorium on campus. The pandemic, however, changed everything and the ceremony was shifted to an outdoor venue at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.
Many students are upset and disappointed over the decision as graduation ceremonies are seen as a rite of passage.

That’s wrong on so many levels. College graduation is a once in a lifetime moment that deserves to be had by all graduates.
I didn't go to my college graduation
Yall went to college for the degrees not to walk on a stage or a picture time for reality homies
I skipped that garbage. I don’t regret it all cuz I never cared about it. It’s not the make-believe fantasy I wanted to live. Stayed home and played the newest video game. Something worth the time and investment to me. I’m just glad not everyone is like me cuz we would have no doctors ect…
@@drblitz3092 So, you want a lollipop or something
I skipped the ceremony after the the weather hit 92 Degrees, apparently it lasted 4 hours and some people passed out
One of my friends was upset by this and decided to sneak into another uni's graduation and walk there. Imagine your students not even wanting to attend their own and going greater lengths just to experience their traditional right to walk the stage? What an embarrassment.
That's right, no one should have showed up. That would have been a loud protest. I will not recommend Cal State long beach to anyone.

The nut jobs will continue to push Covid as long as they can. Why are they still wearing masks outside 3 years later?
What about the thing that actually matters...the degree. Ya know the whole purpose of your years of hardwork and dedication?
Not being able to walk shouldn't impact someone to the point it makes you legitimately angry. Mild frustration? Sure I can go along with that but you got your degree which is significantly the bigger deal.
They really rented the whole stadium for the graduates just to sit as an audience🤦♂️
unfortunately im sure its more on the angels side. the angels prob told them what they could and couldnt do to protect the field but it shouldnt be there in the first place. im sure the thinking is so they could spread people out
San Francisco State's been doing it like this for a while and yes, it's boring and impersonal.

This was during the pandemic people did crazy things
Class of '17 here. I was the last graduating class to have been able to attend the graduating ceremony at the Quad near the library when the President would shake every student's hand and a person's name is called. I actually recorded myself that day when people would throw confetti in the air and everyone was so happy. One of the best and memorable moments of my lifetime that I'll cherish forever. I really feel the pain for the graduates post-Covid. Who on earth would even think that attending a graduation ceremony at Angel Stadium would be ideal when it has nothing to do nor related with the School? Meanwhile schools like USC (my 2nd alma mater) continues the great tradition of allowing students to walk through the stage and hold a nice commencement. Go Trojans and Fight On!
Weaver was a dirt bag, don't blame the Angels
The Quad is the appropriate place for graduation.
Class of ‘17 over here too. I remember that vividly too. Sad others don’t get to have the same experience we did…
07 Grad. I'm also confused why the news mentioned the Pyramid. My undergrad was celebrated at the huge stage tent & chairs at the quad.
Students should remember this when they are asked to donate as alumni in a few years. As for those applying to CSULB now, keep this in mind if it means a lot to you (or transfer if you are there now and it’s a big problem lol). University doesn’t seem to be budging
I have friends that attend/attended that school and according to them, the only reason they didn’t walk like other schools was because Conoly and staff did not want to call students names. The school held their Cultural Graduations in the blue pyramid but not the traditional one. It wasn’t a COVID issue, it wasn’t a weather issue, it was simply laziness and about money.
Why would they not read their names over the loudspeaker? They never explained that here.
Because our president said it would take over 22 hours to read everyone’s name, which is not true.

Absolutely laziness from admin. Those students worked YEARS and deserve to hear their name & walk, break it up by department & call names for three days if that’s what it takes. Lazy admin!
Jordan, great job in speaking out about this disappointing graduation ceremony. You definitely deserved better. If this is any consolidation for you the UCLA graduation ceremonies are even more impersonal and dissatisfying. During Covid the graduates walk around the track field, 6 yards apart, went up on stage alone and took a photo holding a fake diploma. No speeches and no music. What a major letdown.
I graduated college in 2020 and was gutted not to have a ceremony. All we had was a youtube live link where our names were read across a screen. No photo shown, no live video, just a name read through audio. This moment was important to me since i didn’t go to prom in high school. I regretted it and never wanted to miss another milestone moment in time. Cmon it’s time to lift that restriction.
I just graduated from CSULB and my family and I were very disappointed. We as students paid so much money and worked so hard to at least get our names called! They probably have a big contract w/ said stadium 💰
And yet these college administration earned the big bucks while the graduates treated like they are getting bread and water on that special day.
I agree with the students. It's part of the point of graduation from anything. For students family and loved ones to hear their name being announced over the big speakers and walking across to be handed their diploma or certificate or degree anything even a vocational school. I'm all for the students This is a travesty and should have never ever been done like this how disappointing for them honestly I think they should be reimbursed some of their money back from even going to that school and I lived in California for years born and raised things like this make me happy I left
The students should have boycotted and organized their own private graduation. Get some alumni to finance it and tell the administration where they can stick it.
I graduated from CSULB in 1981. Graduation was on campus. Master's candidates got to cross the stage and have their names read. Bachelor's candidates stood up, moved their tassels, and sat back down. No names read, no crossing the stage, no receiving of diploma case. So this is nothing new at CSULB.
That sucks :( I am class of 2009 (Bachelor’s degree) and everyone got to walk across stage as their names were read. Graduation was in from of the AS building. I was lucky.

CSULB was my first choice but they rejected my transfer application back in 2021, they were the only ones to and I was a bit sad…Now it’s saddening seeing if I had been accepted I would have been part of this graduation class and they weren’t even recognized appropriately for their hard work and decisions. I stayed at the same dorms as Jordan and we even hung out a couple times before I graduated from CSULB in 2021. @Viridiana Luna lol, well at least we got to walk the stage and have our names called off.
In this troubled world, in these troubled times what a ridiculous, callous out-of-touch decision about a day we all remember for the rest of our lives.
My college graduation had a high profile celebrity graduate. The University made arrangements to have a stage to the side, for the press frenzy and for the celebrity's needs.
But they also did it for the other graduates to enjoy their day, their moment to shine, for their parents, for the legacy of this accomplishment.

Hey that’s not cool!!! These students paid a fortune for their education, jumped thru all the hoops… the university dropped the ball on the biggest day of all… they worked so hard and paid so much and you treat them like a second, third, fourth class! They were the stars of the show and the school sidelined them.
😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
What's their given and/or actual reason for this? I thought for sure an explanation from the school would be given in this report.. would love to know their reason, rather than just speculation
I don't get it!!
CSULB signed a contract with Angels Stadium during the pandemic because at the time no one knew if and when the pandemic would end. When the ending came rapidly and everything started opening up, it made the 4-5 year contract useless. They can’t break the contract at all until the allotted time is met.
Another reason they prefer the stadium is because it’s easier to keep track of students and has more security than campus.
I personally would like to have the ceremony on campus. You attend a school just to graduate in a stadium? Nahh no thanks. Also, if there are cultural graduations held on campus why can’t the graduation ceremony be held there? Conoley and board caught lackin
Honestly graduations should be smaller, because noone wants to sit a listen to the names of all students in every department. Maybe each department should have their own graduation, that way it's less people attending.
Depends what school you go to. Mine had graduations grouped by majors because if you did one department at a time, you'd be sitting there for days before they get to your name

You were about to choose a csu over a UC?
Why show up if you can't walk across the stage and name not called. Just send it in the mail. I didn't care about showing up for graduation.
Were there smaller satellite ceremonies? Like for schools or departments? My university did that. The main ceremony was mainly for the big name speaker, media, etc and then our names were called by our professor at smaller ceremonies throughout the weekend.
Imagine paying thousands of dollars and countless hours of hard work to graduate and they won't even shake your hand and read out your name. Poor show from Cal state long beach and good luck to all the graduates in your future endeavors.
Wtf !!!! That’s the biggest accomplishment, everybody waits for!!!!!
I would be mad because it's a long time tradition and a quintessential event of graduation. Not to mention, the amount of hard work and MONEY - I would be angered if I don't get the basic recognition as a graduate of that university. The students are the ones who pay for the administration salaries They are there for the students' welfare, and its their job to make sure the university is one of the best places to study and get a degree.
Had friends that graduated from Long Beach in 2021. It was frustrating not to see them walk at a normal graduation. On top of that, the speeches were unnecessarily long for no reason AND we weren't able to even hear what was said. Something was wrong with the speakers.

I've been to Angel Stadium for work-related issues and they emphasize to contractors its a 'no-no' for anyone to walk on the infield/basepaths during the baseball season. Are they going to return graduation to the campus in the future? When I graduated in 1980/1984 each 'school' within the university had a ceremony in the big open area on the south campus (it was two grad ceremonies per day over three/maybe four days IIRC?). I didn't attend my masters degree graduation, just picked up the diploma when notified it was available.
This news report does not make clear why they decided not to say their names. Was it to save time and get everyone out as fast as possible??

This has been an issue for years at CSULB, even before COVID. My graduation year they opt’d to do the ceremony in lower campus and no live orchestra. That was a big deal at the time. But having to sit with your parents? That sounds pretty terrible.
That’s so ridiculous. These people who did this graduation ceremony need to retire. This should be announced and show off the students great work!

Where was it held last year??
They proposed this for Cal State LA for Class of 2021 at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Same exact thing. No walking across stage and no names read aloud. We def shared our complaints and eventually it ended with the ceremony held at the school.
I side with the students. I was at sfsu graduation 2022 watching my bfs sister graduate and while some politician got almost 2 hrs of speech, the rest of the students didn’t even get to walk the stage. They were on the side of the giants field stadium picking up a blank diploma book and took a picture, except the valedictorian and the student council, no one else walked the stage. None of their names were called out, except the program they are graduating from. These students have the next everyday of their lives to listen to propaganda, they really should’ve made graduation what it is for, a ceremony congratulating the students for their work and determination in their field of study
At least their not graduating on a parking lot under a large white EDC type canopy
Why does it say class of 2021, is it an old video footage?
Why are graduations not held on the quad anymore? It was on separate days for different majors and it worked out fine. (gradated 2017.)
