1943 US Army Field Ration K Dinner Unit Vintage MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Taste Test

- Check out this still surprisingly edible WW2 K Ration Dinner! Essentially the original U.S. MRE, the K Ration was designed as an Initial-assault ration - an organized box of food, cigarettes, coffee, etc that a soldier could depend on when field kitchens were not available. Many troops lost between 30-70 pounds during their tours due to not only the rigorous physical demands of WW2-combat, but also to the under-nourishing K Ration - where a full day's K Ration, if fully consumed, only provided approx 2,930 calories per day for a Breakfast, Dinner, and Supper Unit.
This K Ration Dinner from early 1943 production (correction at end of video thru lot code ID on main can) was an incredible find - and an exclusive rare look into a true historical time capsule of a truly pioneering era in Military Rations.
A little backstory on this video - it very well could have ended up never getting released (or having serious continuity issues) had I not saved a couple of each of those K-1 and K-2 biscuits for a Ration Reproduction Enthusiast. The biscuit eating
scene where I turned the camera over ended up permanently corrupt on my computer, and I'd already wiped it from my chip..whoops!
I hadn't realized it until 5 days later - had to re-shoot (and sadly consume half of each 1 K-1 and 1 K-2 leaving only
1 1/2 K-1's for the repro guy and 2 1/2 K-2's. No big deal - they have already found a good home for a fellow that is getting
perfect measurements on the fully intact biscuits and he has a perfect replica formula to make the K-1's and currently working on a formula for the K-2's.)
I decided to not re-shoot the cigarette scene because such a fine & rare experience should not be overly indulged.
The other three are re hydrating in a humidor with a few others from previous rations.
So if anyone is wondering, there ya go!
Hope you folks enjoy the video!

Lol was thinking the exact same thing😂
He sounds like he's describing wine and cheese. I went to a wine-tasting today (simply for the copius amounts of wine) and I laughed thinking of Steve describing his ancient MREs the same way. "This one is slightly acidic, with a slight oak aroma, and strawberry notes...."

The main thing was to hangontothe tiny folding can oprnerthat was supposed be included each box, but didn't always come with the ration.A lot of soldiers attached theirs to their dog-tag chain, and continued carrying them around long afterthewar ended!
My father was in WWII in the Army and fought from Normandy Beach on D-Day until October of 1945...he was drafted in 1939 though and remained in the Military for 6 years total. He saw some pretty heavy fighting all through Europe beginning in France and ending in Germany. Wounded twice and sent back into battle both times he told us many tearful stories of good friends and boys much to young and scared to be there dying during big and small battles that seemed to never end. He talked a lot about his daily rations and how it was the only thing they all looked forward to...getting his pack of smokes and much of what they ate had Pinto Beans in them. I suppose there wasn't too much to look forward to in those days knowing that you most likely would wake to bombing and heavy cannon fire from tanks and such. So this is particularly special for me to see because of all I had heard about them. Thanks for sharing.

Michael Hanson because it’s a time capsule
I think his enthusiasm is contagious, to be honest! I enjoy American military history very much, yet wouldn't have thought this aspect of it would be so interesting, until discovering this channel.

Hey Steve, after watching a lot of your videos I can tell that you are somewhat self-conscious about the chewing sounds that are made whilst you are eating. I just wanted you to know that you don't have to apologize to us. We know exactly what we are heading into when clicking a food video. And also some people find the sound of chewing to be pleasing when watching people eat. Anyway, love the videos. Hope you're doing ok.😊

Watching Steve slowly grin at 15:05 made my day.
Just to clarify, those bugs where probably after the fat on the cheese. They mainly go for that and cannot eat hardened sugar with their mouthparts. They also defecate quite rarely (we can keep on using the same medium as many times over if we raise them) as they are in a larval stage and need to get to adult quite fast.
I love your channel, I am a huge scholar of WWI and WWII history. Everyone of your videos is a gastronomic time capsule.

my dark secret: Having a thing for Steve1989 and watching his videos over and over just to hear his voice...
These videos are addicting as heck! Nice!
I\ve eaten one of these back in the 80s. It was the ham and lima beans. The cigarettes were packaged a little differently, but it was all edible. Not at all tasty, but it looked better 30 years ago. The smokes were better when it wasn't cheap Vietnamese tobacco. That's part of what is killing American tobacco. That, and the fact that tobacco really sucks for your health.
Quit smoking and kill off those industries who killed off the domestic industry out of spite then.
