American in Vilnius and Warsaw

- Vilnius Lithuania and Warsaw Poland are cities in Europe that should not be missed. The history, food, art, architecture, and culture pull you in from the cold snowy streets to the cafes and restaurants. The Balkan states hold a special place in history and in this moment hold the line against Russia while others waver and capitulate.

It's so strange, it looks like you only explored a few streets around the main train station area, which is planned for regeneration in a few years, so is currently a bit run down looking. It seems you missed the most beautiful parts of the Vilnius old down like the castle, cathedral, town hall, and gediminas street which are on the other side of the old town.
I was staying right next to the train station so yeah, there’s a fair bit of video from that area. I walked around a lot and got pretty far into the old town. I tend to just wander rather than seek out tourist sites, thus the “fall off the map” channel name. I like walking around without any plan or itinerary and just seeing a place without expectations. I guess you could say I’m an anti-tourist.
Glad you are back! Always enjoyed your chatty, casual style of showing the places you travel to. I feel like I am right there with you! So cool seeing Poland and Lithuania---places you do not here much about but certainly seem worth a trip!
I’m glad I’m back too, and thanks. Getting positive feedback like this really makes it all worth it.
It's all good to see, just your description: it's Baltic States not a Balkan
Thanks. I occasionally slip up with my pronunciations and descriptions.
Thanks for taking the time to film and edit this. I enjoy your no frills approach (and in a good way) to showing folks around the different locations you visit. Glad to see you heading back to Ecuador!
You’re welcome. Yeah, I try to give a very realistic view rather than the “everything is beautiful and perfect” sort of travel video. I do wish I’d wandered a little farther into old town though. Some of the comments from people that know the city mentioned that I missed some of the better parts of the city.
in Warsaw u could just use normal crosswalks instead of metro tunnels bro
Yes, I know people are great about letting pedestrians cross at crosswalks in poland, but it was raining and a lot of these intersections had really long lights.
Poland and Lithuania - cool !!!!!
24:39 After the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, German forces destroyed 80-90% of Warsaw's buildings, including museums, art galleries, theaters, churches, parks, and historical buildings such as castles and palaces. They deliberately demolished, burned, or stole an immense part of Warsaw's cultural heritage. After the war, extensive work was put into rebuilding the city according to pre-war plans and historical documents.
Thank you for the explanation.
Very nice video. Looks cold bru!
It was!
Awesome brother, cool you're taking some time to see the sights and have some fun before you head home, such a richly historic place.
Yeah, it’s a part of the world I would probably never have seen if I didn’t have a job here. I only wish I could have seen it in the summer.
@@FallofftheMap Who knows, maybe you'll get the chance in the future heheh, there's a lot of place I want to go to and haven't yet, got to get on that lol!
There is a lot of Polish history ín Vilnius. We used tó be As 1 country ín the pást during the era of the Jagiellonians.
MY MOM IS FROM VILNIUS.GOOD TO SEE THIS CITY.I AM FROM WROCLAW POLAND AND I AM LIVE IN KANSAS CITY USA WITH ALL FAMILY.THANKS FOR VLOG.❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
You’re welcome!
Have fun exploring my friend, stay safe.
Thanks, I’ll try to stay safeish.
It seems you didn't venture far from the hotel you stayed in next to the Vilnius train station and only explored the run-down part of the Vilnius Oldtown, missed literally all the most beautiful parts and landmarks. Later in the video you complain about a 15min walk and talk about possibly getting a taxi (lol). I'm not sure what's the point of exploring if you're this bothered by walking and the weather.
Yeah, I definitely could have explored more. I walk a couple kilometers from the train station, just sort of exploring at random.
wow great video man keep it up loved it what camera do you use? l it made Vilnius looks so cool
I just use an iPhone 14pro. I don’t like walking around with an obvious camera for walk & talk travel vlogs.
Ararat is the mountain where Noah landed his boat during the 40 day flood.
Thanks for the explanation. I always appreciate it when people take a moment to educate me in the comments.
Really beautiful town
It really is!
Lithuania 👍👍👍
Warsaw and Vilnius are best visited in May or June...
Not in November, February or March...
Yeah, I’m sure that’s true. This wasn’t a vacation. I was in Poland for work. I would have much rather visited in the summer, but I’ll be busy in Alaska all summer.
A very bad time of year to visit Warsaw. Grey, gloomy and rainy. You have to come to Warsaw in spring or summer.
Hi, I like your video, even in the rain, and especially in the snow every thing looks great. Please, don't feel offended, but I have to make one comment to your arrival in Warsaw Central Station. If you would say, Good Morning Warsaw, instead of "shitty robot, ridiculousness...." you'd get many more thumbs up from Polish people. I gave you thumb up, but I couldn't resist to say something about your welcome comment. Take care, and I'll be watching your channel.
Yeah, I could have put a bit of a friendlier and more positive spin on the video, it’s true. I tend to not worry too much about how people react to my videos and just show the world through my eyes. I liked Warsaw, but my honest first reaction was “oh look, a shitty robot,” probably because I’m a big fan of the shittyrobots group on Reddit.
Wow now I wanna go!!
Do, but don’t be like me, go in the summer or early fall. Winter really put a damper on my trip.
6:41 I actually stayed at the hostel next to that headshop in Vilnius a few weeks ago, weed isn't legal there yet but CBD and Hemp are
Ah, that explains it. I noticed a couple of these head shops in Vilnius and several in Poznan Poland where cannabis is also illegal. Made me wonder if the law simply wasn’t enforced.
Warsaw has excellent public transport. Cheap efficient fast. Use it n ct time in warsaw Use the trams and you can see everything but faster than if you are walking
How did the snow melt by morning? That's so crazy. I live in Colorado so I'm used to snow melting the next day but that requires sun and it melts by afternoon. My grandparents are from here I really want to visit.
It warmed up and rained at night. It seems to do that often, get warmer at night.
@@FallofftheMap I love that! Less having to scrape your frozen windshields or slip on ice during your morning commute. I really hope I can afford to visit Vilnius sometimes soon!
I thought you were living in Ecuador?
I remember you said you did contract work in Bagram Air Base, so did I in 2008 and 2010
Bagram closing, looked similar to when the US military left Vietnam, in 1974.
Yeah, I’m actually heading back to Ecuador tonight. This was just a short contract in Poland to fund some projects I want to do on my little farm in Ecuador.
what makes sense to eat pizza in Lithuania instead of plenty tasty Lithuanian dishes?
Because I can’t eat gluten and was having trouble finding traditional food that was safe. This pizza place had a gluten free pizza and it had been a long time since I’d been able to eat pizza so I was craving it.
Justified.
Great videos, do you still work in Poland i want to come for work, do you work us US Base, and can you help me how you find the job?
No, Poland was last year. The company I worked for isn’t out there anymore. I hear KBR took over their contract so I would take a look at their job postings. I applied with them but didn’t hear anything back.
Question, on the highest end, what do international electricians make in a month, in your experience?
At the high end, an electrician with a secret or top secret clearance can pull about 20k per month, maybe a little more. 10k is more common. The most I’ve pulled in a month was 17k.
Warsaw was surprisingly nice. Did you notice any mil activity being so close to UKR? Wonder how they all feel in Poland being so close to it all. Great vid!
I haven’t seen military activity but they Police were on the trains checking passports which is unusual on a train crossing between two EU countries.
As a Polish person living in Warsaw - nothing has changed because of the war. There are just much more Ukrainians.
The only difference is the number of Ukrainian people.
Well the general consensus is that poles are arming themselves just in case. But military activity usually happens outside of cities.
Besides the Ukrainian rocket hit small town next to Polish/Ukrainian border killing two people later zalenski was trying to accuse Russia for this "accident" but didn't work out, and doesn't even said his sorry after we took 1000 000' of Ukrainians in and it was obvious try to mess us in the full scale war with Russia there is thank God no more activities.
You should give yourself more time for Vilnius and Warsaw. More museums and restaurants in bad gloomy weather. Too bad you haven't made a friend in Poland who would travel with you. Perhaps your negativity towards Poles displayed in your first video has something to do with it. It always goes both way.
I totally agree about needing more time to explore and understand Vilnius and Warsaw. While I did make a few friends in Poland I have a strong preference for traveling alone, exploring, and making whatever mistakes a solo traveler makes in whatever part of the wold I’m in.
@@FallofftheMap That's what I figured scanning through your other videos. Good luck also with better weather.
@@ongvalcot6873 I’m in Ecuador now enduring torrential rains, but at least it’s warm. Thanks for taking a moment or two to understand my channel and my unconventional perspective. It’s rare that people take time to do that.
@@FallofftheMap Good luck and good life in Ecuador.
beautifull
It is indeed
16:00 - yes, it is because of track size (gauge).
Thanks. I actually managed to guess correctly. I wonder why they built them to different gauges?
@@FallofftheMap There are many options, but I don't know which is true. Probably Tsar Nicholas made such a decision (around 1845) for military reasons.
" The Balkan states..." - You meant Baltic states.
Yes, embarrassing mistake. Didn’t even notice during editing.
Be my great grandmother home☺️
My great great grandparents were from Lithuania and Poland. They immigrated to the US after WWI
Good luck in Ecuador!
State of emergency has been declared for certain regions(March 3)
Be careful after dark because of prevailing violent crime. Criminals targeting buses taxis transport hubs and crowded areas: particularly regions bordering Colombia and Peru!
Be careful using credit cards and ATM!
Makes travelling to Poland and Lithuania a boring cake walk.
Yeah, I take those warnings with a grain of salt. Most of Ecuador is safe. There are specific neighborhoods in the big cities that are always dangerous and the Ecuador/Colombia border has been narco territory for many years. Only once have I been robbed in Ecuador (10 years ago when someone snuck into my hotel room). I got pickpocketed in Poland 3 months ago when someone bumped into me as I was walking out of a restaurant in Ustka.
"Balcan states"? It's nice to host someone from Africa 🤣
Yeah, yeah… Baltic, Balkan… it’s all Cyrillic to me.
@@FallofftheMap Poland doesn't count as a Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) nor we have Cyrillic alphabet (and never had). Use Wiki before journey.
@@TomaszB I realize that. I meant to say Baltic. The perils of not scripting your videos.
drink some tequila;a. helps with the cold.
This is vodka country, Frank.
Man, in my opinion Warsaw is just so much worse compared to krakow. It’s about the city’s soul.
I wish I had gotten down to Krakow. There was so much of Poland I didn’t get to.
Warsaw is occupied by the international liberal leftist mafia. We will have to liberate Warsaw by force.
Name checks out
Those old buildings, Turkeys' earthquake comes to mind.
Valid concern. From what I’ve seen, it’s the shoddy construction in the 80s, 90, etc… that collapse in an earthquake. The old stone buildings have been through the tests of time. This is what I’ve observed in Ecuador. In Vilnius and Warsaw I don’t think earthquakes are an issue. This part of the world tends to suffer from man made disasters.
@@FallofftheMapTurkish construction is shoddy on a completely different level, Some of the worst masonry work I've ever seen, a bunch of concrete buildings propped up by low quality Chinese rebar if any, as an electrician you'd have a heart attack seeing some of the wiring that gets done.
dude this building is not cool...its soviet architecture which everybody wants to get destroyed!
There were a lot of different buildings in the video. Are you talking about the very tall building in Warsaw?
@@FallofftheMap that huge batman building is called palace of culture.
@@roberttwardowski9711 “huge Batman building” is a perfect description. Soviet or not it’s pretty cool looking.
Sooo cool. will be in Poland this year and hope the weather will still be good as what i am watching right now. Dont you have insta?
