A lot of the forces are being transferred to the lower and upper panels via the B pillar. There are tubular structures under the drivers seat that also transfer forces away from the driver into a crash box located in the center. This is part of the SIPS system
I was just looking at the NCAP pole test for the Model 3, the Volvo S60, XC60, and XC90. Digging into the details, all parts of the dummy's body received a 'good' rating on all cars except for the upper torso measurement. The Volvos received a downgrade to an 'adequate' score for the upper torso, while the Model 3 received a downgrade to a 'marginal' score for the upper torso. The Volvos clearly did better on the NCAP pole test
This car has another crumple zone under the center console area. The reinforced seats move together without collapsing. They maintain their original width but the center console crushes instead.
The volvo has crumpled zones, which make the energy passes to the cabin, while the model 3 passes all energy to the passengers and the driver, causing more injuriess than the s60 passenger could have
Volvo and Tesla are clearly the safest cars there are, but let's not crow too loudly. Tesla was chomping at the bit to have the IIHS do the 'small overlap' crash test on the Model S. But the Model S didn't do so well, with only an 'acceptable' score. And it wasn't just because the dummy missed the airbag, but there was also significant intrusion into the foot well. And the S-60 is a much older car, the Model 3 is brand new. Nevertheless, the S-60 got a 'good' on the side pole testing. The old S-60 has pretty much run the table on crash testing at both NCAP, NHTSA, and the IIHS.
777Outrigger i saw the new tesla video. Its impressive. Is also saw the tesla hit the pole at 29 kmh. Was that the same as the volvo? I cant find anywhere how fast the volvo hit the pole.
Based on what I've read, the Model 3 and the S60 hit the pole at the same speed. I think the Model 3 probably did a little better than the 'old' S60. But not as much as Elon said. Various 'pole test' videos show the the S60 driver seat moving inward, away from the side-impact, which is part of how the Volvo SIPS system works, while the Model 3's seat stayed close to the side-impact. And the 'old' S-60 was awarded 5-stars on this test! But with the Model S has had a lot of trouble with the 'small overlap' crash test, and was downgraded to an 'acceptable' rating by the IIHS. I suspect the Model 3 would have the same trouble with the 'small overlap' crash test too.
What Elon and Tesla don't understand is Volvo SIPS system. Volvo seats move inwards in a side impact, with a crush-zone, so to speak, in the center console area. The dummy impact readings gave Volvo a 5-star rating on this. See 2:12. And Telsas have not done well in the Small Overlap Test by the IIHS.

Safety should be the number 1 priority for anyone buying any car of any segment in any country.
John Doe true, true, very true

i love how you can see the seat is designed to actually slide in a crash like this its so cool
nice catch!

I'm surprised the whole door panel didn't come flying at the driver. Pretty good for a pole crash.
Who came here after Tesla's video ?
Tesla 20 mil'de bu kaç mil'de sütuna çarpıyor acaba? Karşılaştırma videosunda tesla volvo'ya göre daha az hızla çarpıyor sütuna.
How is this a 5-star side pole rating when the pole ends up where the driver was sitting? See 0:45
True!
Compare it to Hyundai Elantra, cheap Korean car did it better.

Thanks jonkolo and Peter, for the truth about this. Now you need to explain this to Tesla and Elon, LOL.
@@jonkolo13people doesnt know shit about impact protection
Love the look on these
5 Years Later, Me Commenting: Yall That Say Tesla Is Better In Safety Is Not True, They Both Are Safe But Volvo Takes The Lead
Are you really sure this results 5 star?
Robert Chen it is, the seat is designed to move inwards to avoid the pole from crushing the driver/passenger
saved my life
Let’s be real, how can you hit a pole this fast while sideways
Maybe you can't hit the pole but in traffic a car can hit u
This happens a lot actually in real life. You drive thru an intersection and someone runs a red light hits you and pushes you into a pole.
@@chrisak49 you made me think about how different I was 3 years when I posted that comment
ruclips.net/video/VYNlTUigncE/видео.html
have you never driven on icy roads with poles on the sides?
Saved by the airbag only to be dinged by the rearview mirror. Nice way to lose an eye.
A little late in posting this, no?
awesome, will by one for my girlfriend
Elon has just killed it today with Model 3 side pole crash comparison...

any car cant stand an impact like this, besides.. who hits a pole sideways? unless you are drifting lol
@Rabbi Shekelberg relax, tough guy
Sorry but the side pole crash tests from volvo are worse.

Didn't look too good. The side door caved in too much. Plus, Volvo is owned by a Chinese company now. Not sure about the safety anymore.
