Accipiter Nissus is the most annoying bird of prey from all the 3 species that attack pigeons. Not only it can't carry away pigeons and can eat them only if they aren't discovered, but they are extremely bold. It is normal to see them often on the loft while the stressed pigeons are hitting the walls. What happened this time? The sparrowhawk did an ambush attack near me right when the flock was flying towards the fence. I closed by eyes but fortunately only one pigeon hit the fence (this one also had a falcon wound but was recovered). The hawk then went in the nearby tree and was watching - it doesn't really care about me, unlike the goshawk or falcon. The dizzy pigeon with a swollen eye and chest flew away from the fence towards the forest (yeah,THAT stupid!). The hawk immediately went after it but I didn't see what happened. My friends (crows and magpies) announced me that the hawk got the pigeon so I ran after them because it had a chance with that little sparrowhawk. Running is healthy for you! 😆
The most common hawks in US or at least in NJ are Cooper's hawks. I don't know the difference between a sparrow hawk and a cooper's hawk. They are very similar to me, but the cooper's hawk seems a little bit larger.
@@blancloft Cooper's are your version of Goshawks we have here, I think, although a bit smaller. I think you also have sparrowhawks, Accipiter Nissus, they are very small, the size of a pigeon really and usually their prey consists of small birds like sparrows but will attack pigeons when very hungry. They are too brave for their size. And I absolutely hate them. 😆 I moderately hate hawks and I don't hate but respect falcons.
Fortunately, you corrected the situation before it was too late. Congratulations to this pigeon. He wrote a new life for her. I hope she learns the lesson next time 💖
And some people think good shepherds only herd sheep…………….. A conscientious pigeon man is a ‘good shepherd’ to his flock. I am glad you got it free from the hawk. Those hawks start eating the bird while it is still alive. Terrible way to go.
@@PPALoft Oh yes, I never thought about how similar it is to the cuckoo. Maybe they were relatives a long time ago, and then they evolved in different directions.
@@Pigeonmaniacom As a child, a river of 3-5 meters interfered with me, which had a fast current and did not freeze in winter. The hawk flew over and I had to look for a tree or a bridge
It was a good thing you managed to save the pigeon. I envy your fitness state :)) I lost a pigeon to the hawk because before I even reached them, the hawk carried my bird over the river and there was nothing I could do from the other side. This makes me think I shuld do more jogging and sprinting to be prepared for it :))
And swimming man, swimming. 🤣 There is no point in running after a mature hawk, they carry the pigeons far away, and they do it fast. With juveniles it depends, sometimes I was able to make them leave the pigeon, sometimes they keep carrying it a bit and stop to rest. The more I run the more they carry it. Usually in the end I get fitness, they get food. 🤪
The sparrowhawk is also very agile. You shouldn't underestimate him either. The good thing is he can't drag the pigeons away. So far I have been able to save all my pigeons that the sparrow hawk caught from me.
It is the most agile. It is the reason I avoid letting my pigeons outside the loft when I am away. This summer it ate a stray pigeon right under my office window.
Once a sparrow hawk entered my loft when it was open and I was cleaning. Hawk sat its talons right on a nest bowl with youngsters in it. The father pigeon wing slapped it. The wing slap hit the hawk right on spot and the hawk fell out of the nest box. It happened in under a second and I was proud of my bird he saved the day. Then I kicked the hawk out of the loft. This hawk loves to eat lizards, bats and squirrels too as I've seen it going after them
@@Pigeonmaniacom there is/was this livestream RUclips video of a pigeon pair nesting next to a falcon nest. The pigeon wing slapped the Falcon and managed to save the nest on several occasions.
