I have a Progressive canister vacuum that is 21 years old and just starting to sound a little rough, so I was trying to see how to give it a tune up. It is heavy yes, but mine looks way sturdier than the one in the video. I love it, change both filters regularly and want to keep it!

thanks for posting. I came across this in my search for new wheels for the unit which I have ordered. My machine is older, can't recall how many years, maybe ten years old. I have a Kennmore Canister Progressive True Hepa vac that's about 6-8 yrs old that I absolutely still love.
Model # 11621614010. Mine rolls very smooth and without effort and I think the hose is sturdy and dosen't fight me like others I've used. The cord is long and retracts effortlessly. Good suction also.
I would hope that a repair shop would not turn my vac away for repair if needed. The one you're showing looks old and beat up.

On the side where you put the tester by the back wheel, I noticed that there was a vent after the HEPA filter on that side to distribute the air our by the wheels. I don't know if that was taken into consideration but I plugged it and put a piece of tissue paper there and it went from blowing around to not moving at all. So I do think the filter is potentially doing more than we think on this one. Just pulled an elegance apart so maybe that part is different. Just thought id put it out there that I found it was vented out that side on purpose. I am sure it is not even close to being as air tight as a Miele but I think it should be pretty good with the filters changed etc.

  • @ReviewingModsOfGames
    @ReviewingModsOfGames 6 лет назад +4

They have changed the design with since moving to that shaped body with the HEPA filter. The motor is actually in a theoretically sealed duct that leads to the HEPA filter, and then the air blows through the filter back into the body through the small vents on the right side and then out the cord rewind hole and the vents behind the wheels. I have no clue how well it seals in use, but by the design, the filtration should be based on the quality of filter used. They also went from an old-style Lamb Electric motor to a Panasonic-made modern style high RPM single stage thing, similar, but slightly better than what is used in the Dysons. Oddly enough, they had a better bag design until they went with the type C bag like that, which is like the bags on the old Eureka Princesses. The respectable Sears 5033 bag has a friction fitting on it like the Panasonic (and Simplicity/Riccar) upright bags.

I received one of these in 1997. It had been misused ever so slightly by a close relative. The FloorMate was caked up with damp carpet powder. I took it to Sears and I had it tuned up and they put brand new HEPA filters in it. They totally took the power head apart and repaired it. I ran hepa bags in it from 2000 until 2022. The hose solit in 2017. I taped and it ran 6 mire years. I had ine more tune up done in 2009.
That Kenmore was a work horse. It ran for 30 plus years. People abuse these machines. They also abuse carpet and everything other household item. This technology was fine for its time. The best part about it was the price. My mom said ahe paid 198 buck with tax. The ine she replaced it with was 279. She has sinced passed on and tge second one is still going at a relatives house.
Ib todays dollars that machine is about 450. Using HEPA bags and a HEPA filter will make this decent.
The next best thing is 800 bucks. The one above that 1200. I niss Sears. Its no sebo. But it does a fine job for 1/3 the cost

Are the new kenmore canisters any decent at the price point they are selling at? Was looking at the 81614 or 81714. Starting at $200 on amazon it seemed like a lot of vacuum for the price. Lots of nice features that you dont get until the miele c3. I think someone said they are rebranded cleava now that Panasonic is no longer making vacuums. I know it wont last forever, but for the price are they worth it or just absolutely stay away no matter what? There isnt anything in that price range with a decent power nozzle. Consumer reports tends to like them...whether that means anything or not lol.

@Matthew Sullins that was the same one i was looking at! Do you think the size and weight is too big and bulky? Supposedly they are kind of heavy and hard to carry up and down stairs. Wondering if they finally improved the filtration with these. If it has the option of a hepa bag instead of paper it might be decent.

Regarding the various vintages of the Kenmore Progressive Model 116 is there a span of manufacturing years considered the "good years" vs' say after this change or point in time the 116 was never the same? When did Panasonic start making the Kenmore Progressive and, was that considered a good thing? I ask because the reviews of the latest Kenmore lineup of the 200, 400 and 600 are not very good at all which has me looking back in time to the Model 116 heyday.

I have one similar to this vac. It runs well as I keep it cleaned and tuned. The design flaws can be worked around, but most people just want to plug them in and suck up anything in the way. Vacuums were not made to suck up everything folks. They come with a manual for a reason. Read it! You will own your vacuum much longer once you know how to use it and service it. The motor in that vac can be fixed. But I agree it won't be cost effective if the owner continues to abuse it like they have.

@@PerformanceReviews Miele is grossly over rated. I have a new C2 Compact Electro I found in a thrift store in as new condition so the price was impossible to pass up but hate using it. The hose is a wrestling match, both too stiff and yet easily kinked, and the attachments snag the hose and flip the canister over on its side. BS ! It comes with an EBK360 but it isn't as good a power nozzle as the EBK340 with my DutchTech. Different and apparently less powerful drive motor. The big Kennys like the Elite are better vacuums for American homes in most ways. While the Miele canister is nice, their hoses and attachments are bargain basement crap and nothing on their hoses is repairable. If something fails you buy a whole new $200 hose. Everything on the big Kenny is available from Sears and even minor parts can be replaced. If the hose does eventually start to crack, you can replace just the hose material, not the whole hose. Better attachments and instead of a turbo tool Kenmore gives you an electric motor powered hand brush that puts turbo tool to shame. The CrossOver power nozzle is one of the quietest made. You did better buying the Elite.

@@PerformanceReviews come on. That's not an answer. That's a scolding. it worked fine but apparently the top wasn't latched fully so it flipped open. I closed it correctly and plugged it in and then the high pitch noise started. I ran it when I bought it and it was fine. I'm just wondering what in the motor causes the high pitch sound that wasn't there before it flipped open. I may have to junk it but at least I think the high pitched sound should have an explanation.

Wtf is goin on here?! My vacuum isn't supposed to sound like that? lol ... Actually my Kenmore is even an older model, 116-26212690C. I've been debating between repair or replace. I've always loved it, but wanted a new one. Thing is, unless you spend $1000, it's pretty hard to match the specs. 12 AMP, Powermate Carpet groomer, long autoreel cord, bout 100lbs., you know. haha
US has abandon canisters, but they are the best set up for a house full of carpet, imho. Just wish I could find a decent one for under $300.

We have one from the 80s that finally broke, and we won’t be buying one of these, since they aren’t made well. Thanks.

Yeah, pos forsure. Can't believe Consumer Reports thinks the Kenmore canister or upright are great performers. Thanks for all of your vlogs.

Such shoddy engineering...we had one of these growing up and it's why I hated canister vacuums for years. Also why I rarely buy products from American companies.
