Blade HQ I added the comment saying how cool the salt series was and how cool it would be if I won, but honestly I wouldn't really want the knife or the Drone just the footage off the Drone LOL
This is quality content. Like seriously, this is the quality I would expect from a full time RUclipsr, not a knife retail site. Good job guys keep it going
There needs to be oxygen in order for it to rust. Think about pulling an old ship canon from the bottom of the ocean, you would think that being solid iron they would be rusted to sht, but they are not. That is because they are not in oxygen after being exposed to the salt water. My personal H1 blade that is kept in my BCD that routinely gets submerged, then let dry, submerged, then let dry, has a bit of rust on it.
Rust is an oxidization process so leaving things submerged is not necessarily the best test. It would be better to dip the knives in water then leave them in a humid air environment over a period of time. Rusting underwater is dependent upon the oxygenation of the water. You can see that in deep shipwrecks, there is steel still intact because of the relatively low oxygen available to create the oxidation reaction at depth in the ocean. Things will generally rust faster in a humid air environment than under water, which would be a great real-world comparison. That's why you see the drastic effect later on in the video when the saltwater evaporated with the air exposing it and the fan on. Cool vid. Especially the drone guy, hahaha!
This is probably my favorite Blade HQ video. Absolutely awesome. I was expecting the guy to catch it once you threw it up in the air. I about spit my coffee out when it hit the ground. Thanks #Alex
they need oxygen to rust. if you keep it submerged for a week, it wont rust. If you splash it with salt water, and then let it dry and do that a few times, it will rust. H1 will rust, my H1 dive knife has rust on it. (pacific salt)
Yes, but less than air so it slows down the rusting process a bunch, oxygen is largely bound to hydrogen in water, not free, where in air it takes mainly a free form.
wow. :D my friend Bagel is a nautical archaeologist, he's the one who really learnt dat, i just heardt dat. I asked him why the canons on this one ship he was showing me pictures of underwater were so well preserved and not like just piles of rust where canons used to be. that when he told me about dat oxygen adn stuff and i wuz like woah dude knowledge... i cant
Not true. It's oxygen not air, which is in water. If you notice in the evaporation test the knives started to rust well before the water was evaporated.
I bought a dragonfly salt from you guys and it’s awesome. It’s a total workhorse that never had a problem whenever I’m kayaking, fishing, or carrying it everyday. I’m glad I purchased it.
If only Alex was a knife guy, I would be there to pick up the Spyderco Salt Series knife in a heartbeat! H1 steel on the salt series is the best! #Alex
Dude they were going to give you your drone back plus an amazing Spyderco Salt series knife! Just think of the opportunity you missed! Your $500+ drone and a rust proof knife from the best knife company out there! #Alex
Alright Alex get this, the Spyderco salt series is so awesome it survived a whole week completely submerged in The Great Salt Lakes with literally no damage whatsoever were as your drone couldn’t even last half second in it so if that doesn’t tell you how awesome it is i don’t know what will.. #Alex
This was a great video guys! I would love a salt blade! And considering that #alex clearly doesn’t need rustproof machines, I’ll put a drone to good use too!!
My favorite folding knife of all time is the Spyderco Pac Salt 2. I use mine more for an eating utensil and I can put it in the washing machine with the dishes too dont even have to oil it at all. I take this knife paired with a very large Kukuri blade and both can handle just about any job possible camping.
there needs to be oxygen in order for rust to occur, keeping it submerged for a week will not rust the steel. My personal H1 knife has rust on it from being submerged in salt water, taken out, let dry in oxygen, then resubmerged, let dry etc.
I live on the coast in North Carolina and it is perpetually humid year-round. Got me a Spyderco salt 2 in Black because I actually like sharpening blades and I wanted something that I could stick in my pocket for a few years or leave it in my car and and forget about it for years and get back in there later on and still have it work flawlessly.
Fun video ... 440 series steel will hold up well enough if rinsed after use. Many dive knives are made of 304 SS which is high chromium 18% plus nickel 8%. Basically, any high chromium nickel alloy will do well in saltwater. I knew a guy who was an incredible free-diver and spearfisher-man who carried a Buck Frontiersman [420HC] in a leather sheath coated w/ petroleum jelly.
I bought a Dragonfly Salt from you guys, the 1 in the H1 logo completely rusted over. I love the idea of a rust proof voodoo steel, but the fact that they sacrificed the entire knife being completely rust-proof just so that the H1 logo would look cool really takes away from the cool factor
This was a really fun video to watch and also informative ! Not only did I truly enjoy this video, I got the information I was looking for about the Spyderco Salt series. Heads up Ben after that performance you might have an Oscar coming your way. #Alex #Befreelittlebird
This episode was so sick. Loved them giving back the drone that guy seemed really chill on the phone. And he has a rust proof knife to replace his dead drone
Extra cool info from Spyderco's owner himself about H1, since it does have super low carbon content, H1 is not hardened by heat treat, but work hardening. So instead of sticking the metal in a furnace, they use a gigantic hydraulic press to, well, press the metal, condensing it while also hardening it. Really cool stuff!
Wow, Leave it to BladeHQ to have the best damn promotional productions in the buisiness. I'm honestly surprised that the salt knives held up so well. I was expecting the hardware to rust out and bust the action. The knives that my Dad and I keep on our sailboat always seem to rust themselves useless by the end of a season. If there is a series of knives to buy for corrosion resistance, this video proves that spyderco's SALT fills the bill. #alex
This is why I buy knives from BladeHQ. You guys are real and down to earth. I can tell you actually care about your products and aren’t just money hungry. Keep up the great work

I'm a big fan of h1 I'm a commercial diver and my knives have spent an unimaginable amount of time in sea water with little maintenance. I tend to favor the serrated ones better because they require little sharpening. The regular bladed ones require a lot of sharpening i think the make up of less carbon makes them softer and less able to hold an edge, and a dull knife in an emergency is worthless. Important thing to know about these knives. But awesome knives for anyone who works in corrosive environments.
Well good video, now I’m convinced about the H1 blade. That little yellow serrated knife I’ll be a perfect addition to my fishing gear. #Alex I think you guys scared the 💩out of him with that phone call. 😆
Alex: I can't believe you missed out on this great opportunity to meet the crew at BladeHQ. Honestly, you should be ashamed. Mainly because you missed out on a free Spyderco with H1 blade steel. The blade literally won't rust or corrode (unlike your drone). BTW, That knife is worth more than your piloting skills. I pity you, #Alex
We don't blame Alex for not coming to grab the drone. There wasn't much left of it and Alex didn't know that there was a free knife in the deal... there's also the distinct possibility that he was a bit weirded out that we found him. - Matthew
Willis Watts see the Blade HQ crew are high road guys. If I'm ever in Utah, I'm gonna come by knock on the door and ask for a meet and greet with a tour. (Don't worry. I probably never going to Utah. Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
Atlantic Salt serrated sheep's foot has been my dive knife for a few years now. It gets soaked in tap water with the rest of my gear post dives. Zero rust. Easy to open with 3mm gloves, good for cutting tangled fishing lines and nets. Curious about the LN200 but no reason to buy one yet.
I would like to have seen footage of the rusty ones after you rinsed and oiled. I’m curious if they were usable after the testing. (Especially the fasteners and hardware) Make a sequel!!!

The evaporation test was far more accurate, for me. It's the interaction between salt and air which causes corrosion.
yeah i was gonna mention that but
Why did they not use the same steel for the fittings?
Not true. It's oxygen not air, which is in water. If you notice in the evaporation test the knives started to rust well before the water was evaporated.

We don't blame Alex for not coming to grab the drone. There wasn't much left of it and Alex didn't know that there was a free knife in the deal... there's also the distinct possibility that he was a bit weirded out that we found him.

Willis Watts see the Blade HQ crew are high road guys. If I'm ever in Utah, I'm gonna come by knock on the door and ask for a meet and greet with a tour.
(Don't worry. I probably never going to Utah. Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
@@BladeHQ Alex is a big time drug dealer and he was very sketched out that you guys found him.
Damnit was watching hoping for a reunited scene, but LOVED the video and the info on these knives, guess I know what to add to my Christmas list
I think Alex think you collect other contents in his memory card. 😂
Fooking solid video production here. Impressive.
Just another Blade HQ BA production #Alex just lost his 15mins of fame
Great job, great video. Very cool you contacted thedrone owner.
It's a shame he never picked up the drone, now he'll never know how cool the Salt series is #ALEX
(Especially the fasteners and hardware)
Make a sequel!!!
This is the shit we subbed for
