when i can't find chinese characters among typeset, i can create some by combining two or more characters and squeeze or stretch into a square. by doing so, even these complicated are available with adobe illustrator.
How to make a complex Chinese character: Step 1: Set up the radical. Make it the smallest compared to the entire mf character. Step 2: Cram as many basic Chinese characters in the character as you can. Make sure to make these characters traditional just to add more strokes to the character. Try to write as much strokes as possible. Step 3: Set it's Pinyin. Make it so simple people would rather pronounce it. Step 4: Give it a ridiculously long and stupid meaning that no-one would even use it in their daily lives, unless they want to flex their calligraphy skills to others. Step 5: Post it online and say that you created it. Jokes aside, your handwriting is so satisfying and smooth. I like it!
First time viewer here. Several of my ancestors were talented amateur calligraphers in China way back when, and they've motivated me to dabble in Chinese calligraphy myself. Watching you effortlessly execute these extremely complex characters makes me want to take up the hobby again.
Alright, something very important. These characters ARE ABSOLUTELY NOT USED in conversation. They are usually multiple words combined to make a phrase. So no, teachers don’t tell kids to write this, nor do they usually say it.

(Note it's made of several kanji for cloud (雲) and dragon (龍)) I thought that was the one with the most strokes, but the one on the bottom left seems much more... complicated. The top part reminds me of thunder (雷), but with many 田、土、風。There's flight (飛)、phoenix (鳳)、dragon (龍)、and deer (鹿) below, mountains (山) to the side, but below, so it must mean something bigger than mountains rather than a valley (谷/渓/溪) which aren't present. Shinnyou (辶) suggest something ongoing, like movement or time. My guess it means something like a “Dragons tempest”, the 土 beneath the 雷 but above everything else might suggest a meteor shower or earth shattering/quaking thunderstorm.
Someone else said that it meant something like “peaceful life” with the receiver walking through life and encountering these things Also the rain, soil and fields represent good harvest

It’s just like whatever the longest word in the dictionary of your language of choice is, used very rarely and even then, there are easier to use/write/pronounce synonyms that get used instead (the noodle name character is also more of an art character than a real character used in writing)

All of these are hyougai (uncommon) kanji and probably only exist in historical text if in any text at all. Might have been some Heian meme contest to come up with the biggest single kanji, for all we know. The meaning may have gone lost in translation from ye olde Japanese or Chinese (some of these might not be Japanese inventions like the bottom right one) but we can infer or deduce (some of) its meaning from the elements used in these.
IIRC There lower right kanji means "the appearance of a dragon in flight" and it's a variant of another complicated character imported from China. The upper left character is actually not Japanese, but an obscure Chinese character. It is pronounced "biang" and refers to a very specific kind of noodle. It is normally written twice to spell out the noodle's name in Chinese: "biangbiang". I have no idea about the other two characters.
The first character is bonnō, a kanji for a Buddhist concept called kleshas, which are like emotions that cloud the mind, probably created in 2011 or so. The bottom right is taito, “the appearance of a dragon in flight”. Older, but first appeared in a dictionary. The top left is the biang in biang biang mian, a noodle dish the character was likely invented to market for. The bottom left character seems to be Chinese only, much more obscure and almost all Japanese language sources said they did not know the reading, and apparently was invented by someone in 2014. So yeah only the biang really gets used.
The up-left one pronouncing “biang” (sounds like Beyoncé without cé), which means the sound of noodles smashing on the cooking board, really exites in people's daily life in Shanxi province China. Yesh! There’s a story about a dude who ate a bowl of bian bian mien, but when it came to pay, he didn’t have any money. So he created the character for biang as payment XDD
As a Cantonese speaking person, our traditional characters are hard and confusing, that’s why I only know little Traditional Chinese. I can relate to this in class when I was in fourth grade, we saw some characters with bunch of strokes, there was even one with 64 strokes! I tried to write it, but it was too complicated, my classmates had to help.

This is amazing. I have always thought of Chinese as a beautiful language, and I would love to learn it but it's extremely different from English and I have the attention span of a gnat lol.
I mean, if you really want, you can learn Chinese alongside Japanese, the two languages are drastically different, but if you are gonna learn the kanji/hanzi anyways, you may as well just use it for both languages.
the person who came up with those Hanzi might've thought of getting all radicals possible, smack it into one big piece, and call it a day. Then proceeds to just name it with one syllable like "Shì" or "Gūang" or something
That’s actually somewhat similar for the creation process, the pronunciation came into being first, then people thought of a nice way to popularise it by making a new character and putting all the significance of the item they could think of into it
@@ricardoshillyshally1741 No. We still use some of them on the spring couplets by single “word”. If you want to practice writing Chinese character, you don’t need to practice those. Not like 鑫,龘, etc, they are not in the dictionary. (I don’t find their official name in English.) You can find more words like these by searching 合體字 or 組合字.
I guess the crazy guys who invented those special characters were doing calligraphy handwriting exercises by writing so many normal characters together for fun or paper-saving.

Question: is there a proper order we must respect to include characters within characters or repeaed ones? Like in noodles, horse is in the middle or doubled? Why not above or below? Or moon and knife in different places or inverted or so?
With these absurd characters there's no real standards. If you look on the wikipedia pages for them there's usually a few alternative versions. However for normal characters though you cannot move around the sub-characters/parts/radicals, and you are also supposed to adhere to a strict stroke order when drawing them (not that people can really tell the difference most of the time).
Each of the element has its stroke order, and with this structure with up down and left middle right, you start from up, then middle in lower part, then expend to left then right.
Stroke orders, subpart placement and even the right form were all constantly changing throughout the history. Some scholar suggested making standards but China is too large to establish and spread such rules with papers and stones in the old times. Changing subpart or adopting uncommon form of the character could be seen in unofficial calligraphy works. The modern adaption of Han characters could be simply divided into Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese, executed by ROC and PRC respectively. To make characters looked much ”equal“, complex subpart should be placed in the lower or on the right, advocate by scholars in the past. But to date, you acn see many characters violate the rule because ROC and PRC scholars preferred to put the phonic subpart on the upper or on the right, with some exceptions.

German is famous for its compound nouns instead of using noun phrases so there's "technically" no limitation on word length. But there are long words in daily -- or at least regular use -- in the news. What are the characters in common use with the most stroke counts?
A quick google gives me 鬱 as the character with the highest number of strokes for characters still in common use in Japanese, at 29 strokes. Practically beginners' level compared to the monstrosities in this video. Fittingly, it means (among other things) depression. That was certainly my reaction when I had to learn it. Someone else will have to chime in for Traditional Chinese, as while I *did* attempt, briefly, to learn the language, I didn't get very far.

中学生のとき夏休みにお台場の科学館かなんかで、漢字コーナーがあって、2文字目が紹介されてたな。嬉々として覚えて帰ったわ笑

簡体字で失ったものは文字だけじゃなく、横に繋がった文化そのものなんだよ。元の繁体字があるから、その繋がりでわかるはずだったものが、簡体字だとわからなくなる。中華文化の正統な継承者は、台湾にある。自ら歴史を棄てたのは中国。

昔、日本語講座に春 遍雀來(ハルペンジャック)が出てた頃、この字(たいと)を知った。すげえ、ドイツ人(多分もう帰化してる)にこんな日本人でも知らない漢字教わるなんて思わなかった、とあらゆる意味で忘れられない文字です。

top left: biang biang noodles
bottom left: known as 172 picture "Huáng". meaning is still debatable or has no meaning at all

Just to clarify, these are NOT 4 whole characters. They are many mixed characters together.

No definitions or sources for these? I’ve only heard of the bottom right one and the top left one. Pretty sure the top left one is biáng, which apparently means the sound noodles make when frying. The other ones have no sources anywhere except this video.

I've only ever seen the top left one actually being used in real life, it's a noodle dish.
This is amazing. I have always thought of Chinese as a beautiful language, and I would love to learn it but it's extremely different from English and I have the attention span of a gnat lol.
I mean, if you really want, you can learn Chinese alongside Japanese, the two languages are drastically different, but if you are gonna learn the kanji/hanzi anyways, you may as well just use it for both languages.
I don't think Chinese use these words in their daily conversations or even in thesis paper.
the person who came up with those Hanzi might've thought of getting all radicals possible, smack it into one big piece, and call it a day.
Then proceeds to just name it with one syllable like "Shì" or "Gūang" or something
That’s actually somewhat similar for the creation process, the pronunciation came into being first, then people thought of a nice way to popularise it by making a new character and putting all the significance of the item they could think of into it

I’m Taiwanese, they are more good meaning drawings than words.
We don’t use them in ordinary conversation or text. They also can’t be simply typed in.

We still use some of them on the spring couplets by single “word”.
If you want to practice writing Chinese character, you don’t need to practice those. Not like 鑫,龘, etc, they are not in the dictionary.
(I don’t find their official name in English.)
You can find more words like these by searching 合體字 or 組合字.
These are Chinese characters, not sure why you would use them, since y’all claim no association to China whatsoever.

I guess the crazy guys who invented those special characters were doing calligraphy handwriting exercises by writing so many normal characters together for fun or paper-saving.

May are know what are the 4 words or their modern writing version. Without know of any is just like random Chinese characters combined into 1. Like the right bottom of 3 cloud 3 dragon.
Now, for the real test: Draw each of these legibly in a one-inch or less square so it can fit in a normal piece of writing.

Question: is there a proper order we must respect to include characters within characters or repeaed ones? Like in noodles, horse is in the middle or doubled? Why not above or below? Or moon and knife in different places or inverted or so?
With these absurd characters there's no real standards. If you look on the wikipedia pages for them there's usually a few alternative versions. However for normal characters though you cannot move around the sub-characters/parts/radicals, and you are also supposed to adhere to a strict stroke order when drawing them (not that people can really tell the difference most of the time).
Each of the element has its stroke order, and with this structure with up down and left middle right, you start from up, then middle in lower part, then expend to left then right.
Stroke orders, subpart placement and even the right form were all constantly changing throughout the history. Some scholar suggested making standards but China is too large to establish and spread such rules with papers and stones in the old times. Changing subpart or adopting uncommon form of the character could be seen in unofficial calligraphy works. The modern adaption of Han characters could be simply divided into Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese, executed by ROC and PRC respectively. To make characters looked much ”equal“, complex subpart should be placed in the lower or on the right, advocate by scholars in the past. But to date, you acn see many characters violate the rule because ROC and PRC scholars preferred to put the phonic subpart on the upper or on the right, with some exceptions.
Short Answer yes, Longer answer no-, Simple Answer, there is order, but do what you will with poetry and caligraphy.

In Chinese, no matter how complicated of a character, just has a only one syllable.
For example at 1:30 of this video, this character just read "biang", and its meaning to be a traditional food of noodles., Its pronunciation by its making process of flopping.
So, it looks like a slogan or logo,but its creational meaning has lost. But out of natural of Chinese character, I think I can get the general idea.

German is famous for its compound nouns instead of using noun phrases so there's "technically" no limitation on word length. But there are long words in daily -- or at least regular use -- in the news.
What are the characters in common use with the most stroke counts?
A quick google gives me 鬱 as the character with the highest number of strokes for characters still in common use in Japanese, at 29 strokes. Practically beginners' level compared to the monstrosities in this video.
Fittingly, it means (among other things) depression. That was certainly my reaction when I had to learn it.
Someone else will have to chime in for Traditional Chinese, as while I *did* attempt, briefly, to learn the language, I didn't get very far.
usually common use Chinese characters have around 10-20 strokes but some of them go much higher

動画右下の文字は日本にしかない漢字で、Unicodeにもある一番画数の多い文字。
「たいと」と読んで、意味はわからないけど、昔、ドイツ人漢字研究者のハルペンジャックが「ファミリーネームだと言われてるけど、確認されていない」とテレビで言ってました。
幽霊文字と言われている、もう使われなくなったロスト漢字など、結構あると思いますよ。

They seem like Taoist seals, they seem to refer to I Ching symbology and certainly rely heavily on the actual abstract meaning of these characters.
And actually, those characters mean "The cat has a hat." Very interesting.
