Shia militias formed as a response to these attacks/invasion since the government was not protecting these people. Iran started funding them and then you had Hezbollah emerge. They were the ones that forced Israel to retreat in 2000 the next time they invaded. The truth is that the Lebanese government, while often at odds with Hezbollah and even in conflict with them, lacks the power to actually eliminate them and they also rely on them to keep Israel at bay. After the end of the last Lebanon-Israel war in 2006, Hezbollah was ostensibly supposed to be disbanded as per the UN resolution but since they were not involved in those negotiations they did not adhere to this. The only reason that Lebanon had the leverage to reach a deal with Israel is because of Hezbollah. Since 2006, Hezbollah has actually grown to be better armed, better trained, and have more personnel than the Lebanese Army itself. They hold seats in the parliament too and are in a coalition with other parties including Christian parties. They are more than 10 times the size of Hamas and they are much more organized. The history of this goes back to the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. The Israelis were allied with the Christian Phalanges who had committed some massacres at a refugee camps. Shia militias formed as a response to these attacks/invasion since the government was not protecting these people. Iran started funding them and then you had Hezbollah emerge. They were the ones that forced Israel to retreat in 2000 the next time they invaded. The truth is that the Lebanese government, while often at odds with Hezbollah and even in conflict with them, lacks the power to actually eliminate them and they also rely on them to keep Israel at bay. After the end of the last Lebanon-Israel war in 2006, Hezbollah was ostensibly supposed to be disbanded as per the UN resolution but since they were not involved in those negotiations they did not adhere to this. The only reason that Lebanon had the leverage to reach a deal with Israel is because of Hezbollah. Since 2006, Hezbollah has actually grown to be better armed, better trained, and have more personnel than the Lebanese Army itself. They hold seats in the parliament too and are in a coalition with other parties including Christian parties. They are more than 10 times the size of Hamas and they are much more organized.
