Ivan my man, you are an absolute lovely dude. I have learned so much from you. Arguably more than I have ever learned from another GM. You have a way with people and with stories that is unique. So, thank you! I'm glad you found something that brings you the amount of joy as you had in dread. Definitely a masterpiece
Dread was a really special game. I don't think I've seen a game (or, well, a couple of games) so particularly tailored to my interests. Not only every player was fantastic, but Ivan really dragged the best (and worst!? I mean, in game, character wise, terrible, just terrible things happening, and everybody loving every second of it) of every player with his narrative and challenges. Satine is absolutely right when she says Ivan really managed to lean on his deep voice and the fact he can get really ruthless and scary. Dread just… really, really allowed this side of him to shine, and it's the BEST side. Seriously. As someone who loves to get spooked out, that is the dream!
Truth, even as a viewer he grabbed me from the beginning of the show! Students are often told when they write a story grab their readers and take them for a ride right from the beginning, right from the first paragraph and that was what was done!
There were also some surprisingly emotional scenes in Dread as well. When Sat lost all of her possessions and just broke down in the first episode, I actually believed it!
Great episode! I enjoyed your guest GM and your discussion of Dread and how to create tension, suspense, and terror to one's game. I've never really tried to do that but it is something I would like to experiment with. I am teaching a new group to play...kicking it off with a bit of suspense (once the training sessions are over), using lighting, and sound...all sounds like elements this new group would really enjoy. Thanks again, Satine! I would love to play at your table!
Absolutely awesome review of a highly advanced RPG session. Thanks so much for all the insight you've provided on something I've been doing for 43 years. You guys are the best!
This episode came at the perfect time for me! I'm running a self-built campaign that is very anime-esc with lots of levityand cheer. It's time to crank up some fear (as all anime like to do now and again) and this has given me a zillion idas on how to do it on all levels! Thanks to both of you for your wonderful help! ^_^
I have a campaign coming up and I asked my friends if there's anything they're uncomfortable with/don't want and they were just like "Nah man, go all out I wanna see someone DIE." So here we go I guess lol.
The possibility that it is your Mom and Dad sharing a feast that you wanted! A traditional way parents control their kids is to say "If you don't stop doing that I'll ... " leaving the threat in the air! In a way the DM is making themselves a parent to the players.
Great episode! This is something I need to work on in my games. I tend to run more of a dungeon delving/battle strategy game but I've really been trying to incorporate more mood setting and suspense building. I'm going to try to incorporate lighting and ambiance sounds (like howling winds) in my next session. Also, I've been working a lot more on my narrative bits and not just focusing on combat encounters. Trying to find a good balance. Has anyone struggled with this?
Lol, anyone else think this is the birth of a Super Villain??? I get what he's saying, but "Go one step more", I suddenly imagined him as the Joker or something....
Love the show and good to have Ivan back, but I had a co-worker walk in and immediately say "WTF is that Vince Vaughn" (he didn't see the screen only by his voice). Looked away and wow Ivan ready does sound like him lol
Question: How do you use suspense to create a moment of comic satisfaction? For instant you feel like you are fighting an entire armies of draco-lords, but then realize it's just a kobald and a goblin talking to each-other.
Leo Wolcott Very context dependent. Describe the situation in a way that evokes satisfaction for what just happened. Not, "You stand over the dragons corpse, that was a good kill..." But maybe, "You can feel the heat of the dragon's scales start to creep through your leather boot and into your skin. You look into the clouding eye of the dying Dragon, trying to absorb the last essences of it's life force, wishing that it could be used to bring back your wife and daughter. What a waste, this old wyrm spent it's its entire life destroying anything that didn't bend the knee to it. All Hilda wanted from you is help in catching earthworms to go fishing with. All Hilda wanted was to love you and be loved back. How do you want to do this?"
You may have found it already but I found it on their website projectalpha.com under the name “Sagas of Sundry”. Dread is the name of the first season, not the show so that’s why it might be heard to find
Also just found out, upon trying to watch it, that it’s a subscription based service lol. There’s a 30 day trial involved, but just letting you know lol
I suddenly realize how absurdly easy it would be for Ivan Van Norman could cosplay the Fourth Doctor... just get a long scarf and coat and shave off the muttonchops - he's already got the poufy hair and wild eyes.
Ivan just too say congrats to you and your wife! Ok this part is ok ward, that is your wife at the there end of the promo pics right, the lady/person/how ever you label each other in red?
No, no, no, Ivan OOOOWWW! NOT there ... ok that's a better place hghghhhoooo ya better! No squeezing will not get you the same results so stop it! ... Ok now we ... I said stop it or else! (Parent thing brought up earlier!)
For the same reason that people can be scared while watching horror movies. Something in the game/movie reaches down into the part of your brain that deals with fear and starts jabbing at it with electrodes.
I was a huge fan of this show when Matt was doing it, and I'm not here to hate on Satine, she's solid and I love the new format, but it's just tooooo loooong. I would totally be on board with a audio only podcast of it, but without buying RUclips Red, I just don't want to sit through this much of a sit down interview. All that said, Podcast this please!
I think one reason these are becoming longer is they have covered most of the basic rules and tips to give. Now they have to cover more in depth topics which need more time to cover.
Dosbomber No, silly. Safe spaces for people playing role-playing games full of horror and suspense adrenaline. You've gotta relax every once in a while or the game gets too stressful.
In case anyone was curious, Ivan's facial hair style is called "Irish Boxer".
As a newer Game Master the GM Tips Series has been incredibly helpful. Each game gets better and better, keep up the great work!
The Driver's Perspective I hope you have found Matt Colville sensei?
hatantheclam Absolutely! Both have been amazing resources.
This is the video where I realized that D&D and BDSM are very similar
In that their abbreviations lack vowels.
I have never slapped any of my players, other than that, 100% agree lol
Well, both involve dungeons and occasionally wearing strange costumes...
I don't know about BDSM but roleplay intervenes in several parts of my life, including my sex life.
Ivan: "my job is to hurt you."
"I'll just sit down and check out the first minute of this video, then watch the rest later when I have time".
Watches the whole thing.
*R E L A T E*
I love these two together in a video regardless of the topic. Their combined charisma is entertaining to watch.

Hey Satine, not that you asked, but your on-screen presense is getting smoother and more fluid. Keep up the good work.

I agree. The first time I saw the first ep (during ITTD) I watched for Matt and Taelisen. But stayed for Ivan. He's my new fav, he's amazing
I've been using Geek & Sundry's GM Tips and Critical Role as a way to improve my game for my players. So thank you, guys, for helping me do that!
There were also some surprisingly emotional scenes in Dread as well.
When Sat lost all of her possessions and just broke down in the first episode, I actually believed it!
#context if I didn't watch this from the beginning, I'd believe they talk about BDSM
A lot of this is pretty good advice for BDSM actually, from giving yourself permission to aftercare.
"When everyone's comfortable, and everyone's given their permissions, and everything is in order, you can do some reeeeeeally great stuff"
john doe I'm not convinced theyre not
Madeleine That's when you can start trying out your advanced knots, lol
Well, a lot of BDSM is roleplaying. That's not even a pun. (A LOT of kink people I've known were also RPGers. Like, way disproportionate.)
Just about to run a Call of Cthullhu tomorrow so the timing on this is perfect!
This woman seems like she’s full of love.... I swear she’s in love with all of her guests 🤣🤣🤣. Her personality is refreshing.
Satine is gorgeous and so intelligent. I love listening to get talk about tabletop. She's on my dream team I would like to play the game with.

Love GM outs! this is so fun to hear their tidbits of their GM styles!
Omg Satine I remember playing with you at Meltdown!!!! You had the most unique game I ever played. Miss playing with you.....
Going to be running a game of Dread soon with my D&D group, doing a sci-fi horror, so well timed to have this right now. Loving the series.
Absolutely awesome review of a highly advanced RPG session. Thanks so much for all the insight you've provided on something I've been doing for 43 years. You guys are the best!
I'm very keen to see the surveys/character preps used for that show.
The Thing is probably my favorite horror movie. The first Alien is my favorite movie probably.
Both excellent movies. 😎
This video deserves more views. Great discussion and good advice.

My DM doesn't have to describe something to fill me with anxiety XD
S a m e
*sound of a die rolling*
Me: Oh no.
Of all the undoubtedly great GM's out there, I think the one I'd be most thrilled to get in on a surprise one shot with at a con would be Ivan.
Should do one on bringing NPCs to life or bringing character motivations out with Matt Mercer as the guest star.
Space Iguana nah Ruty is better at that
The possibility that it is your Mom and Dad sharing a feast that you wanted! A traditional way parents control their kids is to say "If you don't stop doing that I'll ... " leaving the threat in the air! In a way the DM is making themselves a parent to the players.

I love how Ivan Van Norman laughs. :D HA HA HA HA HA
Okay... gotta watch Dread now. Been holding off. Must watch.
Great content! Thank you!
Satine, could you make a video about broken player characters and how to balance them with the game?
Lol, anyone else think this is the birth of a Super Villain??? I get what he's saying, but "Go one step more", I suddenly imagined him as the Joker or something....
I'm going to be playing this for a Halloween one off in two weeks 💜 I can't wait!
Super intriguing!
Love the show and good to have Ivan back, but I had a co-worker walk in and immediately say "WTF is that Vince Vaughn" (he didn't see the screen only by his voice). Looked away and wow Ivan ready does sound like him lol
I want to try this game but there aren't many game Masters in my area. Love the discripion good job.👍 ☺

Thank you for the advice, but how do I create a built in fear that's thrown away when the enemy is comically tiny and small?
Leo Wolcott Be intense, and have a dramatic pause... and then, in an incredibly serious manner, say something ridiculous.
Such animation and gestures
Decadent incense, do you have any suggestions for flavours? #asksatine
Where can we see this dread episode? (Can we?) They talk about multiple episodes but I could only find the one from Tabletop Day...
Thomas Coull yah... I wonna know too!
You may have found it already but I found it on their website projectalpha.com under the name “Sagas of Sundry”. Dread is the name of the first season, not the show so that’s why it might be heard to find

hey satine i think you should do a video on how to run giant epic (return of the king status) battles
I suddenly realize how absurdly easy it would be for Ivan Van Norman could cosplay the Fourth Doctor... just get a long scarf and coat and shave off the muttonchops - he's already got the poufy hair and wild eyes.
This show is sponsored by Geek Crate. It's a crate filled with all the Nerd culture items that you crave. Their other sponsor is Nerd Box.
I clapped, I clapped when I saw it!
I KNOW WHAT THAT IS !!!
Very cool...
very cool
Very diverse
Satine phoenix has some of the best scenes ever.
giddity
Dude looks like the kid from Ratatouille
I feel like this episode was a little difficult to follow at times because I had no idea what game they kept referencing and drawing examples from.
Have you since watched the episode where they played Dread for Tabletop Day?
Ma'am, you make me wish I had a GM as good as you, and that I was a player worthy of one.
I've never watched these before, so I was SO SURE, Satine's chair was actually Ivan in some kind of furry animal get up about to spring! roflmao
Honestly, Dread is worth the sub for projectalpha on it's own
Guess I have to watch Dread now.
Building great traps with ruty
Oh. It's Fury's Reach, not Furious Reach. Ivan saying it is the first time I noticed.
Where are these people all playing together? It's like all the best DM's just hang out together playing games all day lol I'm jelly...
Hey there folks, the dread game they are talking bout, where can I find that one?
So?!... What was that strange light?!! I neeeeed to know!
Is there a link to that playthru that they did? I would live to see it.
The dandy who's also a writer sounds like he might be based on Oscar Wilde, especially when you consider their surnames.
I did not s.e.e. (that) cummings.
I misunderstood and thought this was a 'Judge Dredd' RPG
Armageddon2077 nope. Dread is an RPG. Think like a spookyer version world of darkness with Jenga
this fucking music in the background of the beginning drives me insane
Can anyone recommend where to get some gaming music, sounds, etc.? The last time I DM'd we didn't have the tools we have today. I'm ancient!
is there a second one I missed. how can I see this? I need it.
Is there a video for the game session they keep mentioning?
DragonShadow89 if you haven’t found it yet, it’s on RUclips. Search Dread and you’ll find it.
Ivan just too say congrats to you and your wife!
Ok this part is ok ward, that is your wife at the there end of the promo pics right, the lady/person/how ever you label each other in red?
"Go hard or go home"
Which episode of what are they talking about?
Where is this epic dread game they're talking about??? I must see it
projectalpha.com or just type in SAGAS of Sundry to get a preview.
Lol oops the halloween episode came early
11:51
Ahhh I have so many questions
Hidro_lord?
Satine! Marry me xD !! You are awesome!
unfortunately i couldn't really glean much from this one. Maybe this type of game is not for me
Music too loud again. Please fix this in the future
I'd dive deeper into YOUR roleplaying experience.... I don't even know what that means.
Satine, do you have facebook?
Oh wow, at the 10 minute mark, someone really fucked up the editing
No, no, no, Ivan OOOOWWW! NOT there ... ok that's a better place hghghhhoooo ya better! No squeezing will not get you the same results so stop it! ... Ok now we ... I said stop it or else! (Parent thing brought up earlier!)
Sorry, but I don't understand how people can be scared in a Table top game.
For the same reason that people can be scared while watching horror movies. Something in the game/movie reaches down into the part of your brain that deals with fear and starts jabbing at it with electrodes.
I feel like she's talking about porn in the beginning. Little TOO much trying goin on.
Your cuff is upside down...*cringe*
I was a huge fan of this show when Matt was doing it, and I'm not here to hate on Satine, she's solid and I love the new format, but it's just tooooo loooong. I would totally be on board with a audio only podcast of it, but without buying RUclips Red, I just don't want to sit through this much of a sit down interview. All that said, Podcast this please!
You can just download the audio stream of a RUclips video. Google it.
I think one reason these are becoming longer is they have covered most of the basic rules and tips to give. Now they have to cover more in depth topics which need more time to cover.
You could just tab out and keep listening to it while you do something else.
Safe spaces? For people sitting around a table talking about fantasy battles with fantasy monsters in fantasy dungeons? Ugh.. this generation.
Dosbomber No, silly. Safe spaces for people playing role-playing games full of horror and suspense adrenaline. You've gotta relax every once in a while or the game gets too stressful.
Ahhh I have so many questions
