Yay, volg! I think it is great how honest you are about travelling, not sugar coating it at all. I love travelling by train, and I always have big plans about reading many books during the journey, but then I get so anxious that I might miss my stop that I can only listen to audiobooks and stare out the window and check the time and look at the displays in the train.

haha, yes, I haven't read on a train in years. It's aduiobooks, staring out of the window and checking if I am on the right train all the time!
      Thank you :)

It sounds like the trains are rarely reliable there, so I’m sure that makes your anxiety worse! Starting out your trip not knowing if you’ll leave on time can’t be good. It looks like a lovely beach and woods-I bet it’s lovely in the summer though crowded.
I’m getting ready to go on a big trip myself-flying out Saturday morning. I’m going out to the Grand Canyon with my family. I know I’ve said this before but I haven’t traveled by myself much. I should take a little trip this year-maybe just get a hotel and relax there!

Oh the Grand Canyon is great, you will have a great time I'm sure.
Yes, there are unreliable trains lately. I don't mind so much if I don't need to catch connections.
If I had a car remote locations wouldn't be so bad.
Solo travel can be a lot of fun!

I'm sorry that the travel caused you stress. I was smiling when you said it's supposed be a hill not a mountain and that wind with the umbrella didn't sound fun. When you looked at the stairs I went "ah no" breakfast on vacation is supposed to cuban coffee and a apple fritter the size of dinner plate. I have not read any of the books your reading. Been reading Holly Black trilogys and I've got Pervill Everett's Jim on order on Libby.

An apple fritter, hm. Never really think of those :D

I felt the same about The House of Doors. I DNFed it within the first 100 pages. I just found it really dull and I kept falling asleep reading it

I'm so bad at DNFing, and am somewhat glad I finished. Although I couldn't say if I would've missed not finishing really.

I get so stressed out by traveling but that might be due to where I go. I live on an island so taking the ferry is always a show, then the race to the overcrowded bus for a seat. Still, its nice to have a change in scenery. Just those walks on the beach or breathing in the forest air has to be good for you, right? I have bad social anxiety and very little patience so i understand your needs for solitude to some degree.
Haven't read those books but I have been jumping genres lately. Just finished a scifi that was lacking on character development but very easy to read. It was a quick read and it did the trick. "Venus" by Ben Bova. The Canucks actually made the playoffs so I will probably read a little less for a bit. (Canadian hockey team)

Thanks Crystal. I feel I will get used to traveling with more practice again. At the same time I have changed so much in recent years, that I have to figure out who I am now :D
A change in genres can be such a motivation to read more.

@@1book1review You're still the same person, just you are reacting to life a little bit differently than before. Just blame it on hormones, it's what I do haha 😆 JK but still, you're still doing self care activities so I think you'll be just fine.

Apparently "The House of Doors'" themes are 'memory, loss, and cultural dissonance'. According to The Guardian. The writer took a real life scandal that Maugham made into fiction, and made a his own fictional take on the same incident, including Maugham as a character. Kind of an odd idea, but people seem to like it.

Hm. I didn't see memory loss, cultural dissonance okay... The book ended on an interview that cleared the author's motivation for the book, but can't understand the nomination tbh.
