  • The Aussie Fisherman Greg, on my daily run doing crabpots. Using a gopro, to show how to get your crabs out of the crabpot without damaging them. I really like the ultimate pro crab pot. They are the best crabpot I have ever used.
How to identify a female mudcrab from a male mudcrab. In Queensland, it is illegal to take female crabs or under size mudcrabs, so they have to be released.
I have a fair idea if a mudcrab is full by just looking at them. I have been doing this for a long time. It's really easy to check if a mudcrab is full or empty. Put your foot on it's back and press the shell beside your big toe and if you can move the shell in and out, just release it straight away, the crab will have no meat in it. In 3 to 4 weeks, that mudcrab will be full of meat. So it's very important to release them.
How to tie a mudcrab up so it can't bite you or other crabs you catch. This is a very easy way for beginners, there are many other ways, but I think this way is less trouble and quick to learn.
We have had a lot of rain in my area lately, and mudcrabs don't like too much fresh water in the creek or river. It's hard to catch any mudcrabs in these conditions. They either bury in the bottom of the muddy mangrove creeks or go out to sea where the saltwater has little fresh water in it.
The handy tool I made for reaching out over the side of the boat is a broom handle and a stainless steel wire bent in a semi-circle. I like using mullet for bait it's pretty good, it let's out a fishy oil, the mudcrabs love.
