You know you're a good spy when people a thousand years later still debate whether or not you really existed.
Great video man. I have been fascinated with ninjutsu since the early 80s. There are very few of us left.
"THE MASTER" (Classic mini series!!!) I have to say I do miss them old swords and the shuriken/throwing stars from our time. They don't make them like they used to.
I make my own, now.
Old japanese painting from that time shows a straight blade sword
You are such a wonderful historian of Ninjutsu. I always enjoy listening to what you have to say sir
Great Video! Im looking forward to seeing your interview with Sho Kosugi. Regards
I have a theory about the Ninjato sword. The Ninjato sword could be a one of a kind weapon, meaning that only one existed and two historical characters that might have used it. The first one is obviously Hattori Hanzo, a famous ninja who served Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Sengoku Jidai, and the second one would be Musashi Miyamoto. And also, a possible reason why they are no historical evidence of the Ninjato sword’s existence is because ninjas are very secretive to the point that they leave no trace of evidence or any loose ends.
Except it makes no sense to ever carry this 'iconic' sword, when nobody around you uses it. Would kinda make the inkognito aspect for ninjas useless and any other fighter would make their mark in history with such iconic design. Just imagine. Ninjas infiltrate a fortress to recon, hide their weapons in a well hidden area, but unluckily the weapon gets found. The person who found it inspects whose weapon could it be and if it was reported to be lost. Upon the first inspection he immediately recognises the squared tsuba. Very unlikely he would go about his day not alarming the authorities and forgetting about such specific sword with a narrow short blade not used in centuries and a tsuba not even the delegates wear.
Historically there are Ninjato swords my masters has one from 1583 past down for generations
Shinobi
almost the same theory!
But a bit deeper, not only you could be right (only a few Ninjato, existed, and they were only used for the most dangerous mission, by the best of the best), but as Koga, and Iga clan get known, and the era change they could have destroyed them in order to protect all their secrets!
Not only it make sense, but this is something we often see as a cliché btw^^ (So they could have indeed thought this way)
We must be twins as kids. You described my entire childhood. The master TV show was mind blowing back then
Fun walk down memory lane. Thank you!
Pray for death was one of my favorite movies from the 80s
Awesome ! I watched everyone of those movies growing up and love the straight blade ninja sword and was not aware that it didn’t exist.
If they did, they wouldn't look like a Samurai sword
Thank you for the video sensei! The habaki are typically made of brass by the way, the more silberish ones typically nickel plated. Also, the Bujinkan Shinobigatana from Cheness I have wanted one for a while and wanted to let you know Cheness may not be in business much longer so please spread the word and help support if you can ! Their O-Katana looks wonderful, and they do have other beauts as well.
Thank you for your videos I love using them for at home messing around when the dojo is closed . Honestly your Iai video was super helpful since we haven't been doing much sword work lately , thank you from Maine !
What's happening with cheness.
Good video. I collect Ninja-to swords because that's what I grew up liking. Revenge of the Ninja is one of my all times faves and Enter the Ninja is right behind it. It's tough in sword collecting circles because you always have to throw out the disclaimer, "Yes, I know this is probably not historically accurate and no, I don't care." The fact is, the 80's Ninja is like a super hero. There was actual valid training that came from using the shorter straight blade. It may not have hundreds of years of lineage behind it but that does not make it any less valid as a blade or the tactics involves. It's just the coolest looking and I love to watch the "classic 80's Ninja" media that make use of it.
Collect what you love and enjoy it!!!! I'll be collecting my Ninja swords!!!
Well said
Thanks for mentioning Enter the Ninja, Jason. That was the one for me, personally. Many others, as well. Great memories.
Ya revenge of the ninja has great sword fighting scenes.
Ah, Revenge of the Ninja. Only a ninja movie from the 80's would start out with a kid getting a throwing star right to the forehead in the first five minutes.
I know, right?
I like you fell in love with the ninja and this type of sword from the same movies and TV series, my current ninjato is similar to the sword used by the main bad guy ninja in the movie “The Hunted” with Christopher Lambert.
You speak of Kinjo!! lol I'm looking for one of those. What did you come up with? It's a very interesting sword and seems a bit different from the 80s movie versions in handle length, blade length and curve, tsuba etc. One of the best sort of realistic Ninja movies lol
i love the sho kosugi type sword also. i feel we will never know if they did or didnt. for years this has been a debate. i have seen videos and photos. scrolls that show they do and that some say they dont. i trained bujinkan 6 years. other japanese samurai warrior schools also for years. and a decade of training in the mountains. as far as i know i am the only man on youtube who is on horseback in real samurai armor training in the mountains. and i still dont know the truth behind the square tsuba and straight blade etc. i have heard historians and others argue this point for years. i dont think we will ever know.
I just acquired an authentic Sho Kosugi movie sword from Revenge of the Ninja. Also a set of Sai from Enter the Ninja.
Awesome! Enjoy them!!
@@thedojomartialarts Many Thanks!
The square Tsuba is the way it is so that the ninja could lean the sword in its scabbard up against the was or other tall obstacle and step on the Tsubasa for leverage. The chord on the side of the sheath what untied and held while climbing so that when they reached the top, they could pull up their scabbard. Every part of the sword has multi function like a ninja milulti-tool.
The short sword however do have some traits that can be useful for a shinobi such as climbing walls and othe secretive activity
From Japanese theme is sword maker, and I pay him $10,000 to make that sold for me and he was so very happy. I’m glad I got the sword from the movie fire element ninja and is a real sword.
Awsome video, looks wise I like the Ninjato sword to the Katana
I'm 48 now and totally with you, watched this great Sho Kosugi movies,it feels like it was last week.Human life is short! For me a straight sword is non practical when you pull it out of the saya.May be it is good to carry
it on your back. But when you do grab back, it opens the door in front ;-/
Like Kazem says ,a curved Katana goes with the movement, that is why it's curved.
Thanks so much for your inspirating videowork beside the Dojo classes.
The straight sword is found in history in Japan.
They had many hidden swords in canes, and walking sticks that resemble the modern straight bladed Ninja sword.
The real Ninja might have simply used a Wakizashi in real life (or, since some Ninja were Samurai would have just used weapons of the Samurai).
Sho Kosugi is awesome
I had the same dream of owning the Sho Kosugi ninja-to in the 80s and now I own it as an adult. The only complaint about is the saya is too long
The Ninjato's saya is supposed to be long, if ur pointing out ur saya being longer than the sword itself, that's actually how it's supposed to be, bc the spacing under the sword inside the saya is used to store powder, documents, and etc. Don't worry bro, it's completely normal for ur saya to be long.
Good video, as always.
The Bansenshukai mentions using square tsuba on katana. It seems reasonable that katana may have been modified (wakizashi blade with katana tsuka and square tsuba) for some missions, but more likely to appear as normal katana.
Thanks for sharing.
They are also displayed at the Mochizuki house in Shiga-ken
Great replica swords also used from American Ninja movie (1985)?
In all honestly, the bamboo cane swords seem more like a "ninja" variety of weapon, in that you can pretend to be a seemingly harmless old man or monk begging for alms, wait for your victim to pass on by then, WHAM! take them down from behind! Makes the perfect cover for a shinobi who excels at his craft.
Yeah, I think some people forget that "Ninja" were spies, arsonists, assassins, etc. Someone rich and powerful wanted some dirty work done and didn't want any consequences. The person willing to do the dirt for pay was the "Ninja". I'll bet some of the best "Ninja" were prostitutes. Honey traps are still a thing nowadays.
I have the same exact ninja sword in my home and like you I fell in love with the one from the movie revenge of the ninja that sho Kosygin had in the movie I had to have one and practice with it all the time it was the movie that got me started
Very interesting!👍
I love your video! Yes, it's childhood stuff, but we do stray away from that. It's god to go back. I've been wanting to buy a ninja tanto. Can't find anything good. The ninja-to are so plain but I think the dimensions make it have character.
there is a sori called muzori which is just a straight katana i have seen a few but did not seem popular they We're supposedly used by retainers and ashigaru there are a few Wood block prints showing ashigaru having such swords but if it was common or not i dont know
What was the blad length on the Tonto
Ninja 3 The Domination was a favorite of mine. Did you see The Hunted in the mid 90s?
The Hunted! Yes, it had some sick ninja battles. The train scene!
Yes both the Hunted and Ninja III swords seem to have interesting features that made them unique. I wonder what the specs were for both.
really cool
Beautiful sword 😁👍
Was not Kosugi also in Hero of the East with Gordon Liu?
I find this video fascinating 🧐 my style ninja sword is Square katana
Shinobi Gatana looks like Tang Dao 👍🏻
Right! There are plenty of Chinese Sabers (one side , thin long blades). If you were in Japan doing Ninja things, using what would (at least in the dark) look like a Chinese sword (type) would be a great idea. Hiding in plain sight.
Our childhood sounds very similar. I'm in my mid fifties. BTW Revenge of the Ninja was filmed in SLC Utah, my home state.
Very cool, Heath! Those were such perfect times to be growing up as kids.
@@thedojomartialarts As they say "Those were the days" I wish my kids could experience that. BTW What would you recommend for the best Ninja TO for under $500?
These are the best I have in my collection, in my opinion. www.ebay.com/itm/184991155217?hash=item2b12550411:g:oVYAAOSw43NgVUc3
Use shaku for our traditional measurements. [in stead of meters or imperial measurements of inches]. It is permissible since it is cultural or artifact.
Cool video...I had an autograph picture of Sho....do you happen to o know who played the brown ninja???
I would type in Google "Cast of Ninja III" to research him.

@@thedojomartialartshi, well I looked everywhere but I couldn't find the sword any suggestions am I doing something wrong .
Do you have links to the best quality sword you presented?

great swords
The ninjato was easier to carry and more effective for use indoors in close quarters. It could also be used for climbing walls. These all seem like legitimate uses for a ninja sword in feudal times. However, a wakazashi could be used just the same almost, and short curved swords would be more common back then. Less noticeable, easy to aquire. The debate about whether extinct historical ninjas used ninjatos is an academic excercise of speculation. Fortunately, I have both types of swords and I'm proficient in both and love everything about the ninja myth, the historical ninja, and everything in between!
I hold my sword the wrong way because it’s a very heavy one so I can’t get a good swing on it and for sum reason I lose controls holding it rightly
I got a set of ninja sword .small med.lager. cost closed to $100 + tax .then a double sides blade ninja sword. Sai.ninja star. Double swords. I waited to get more lighter.swords. that guy came out also in ninja 3.
Your voice sounds a lot like Robert Beltran who played Chakotay on Star Trek Voyager
It wouldn't be hard or impractical for Shinobi to alter or modify katanas to suit the needs of the ninja. Ninja did make their own weapons, I'm sure. The ninja were good at what they did and I can bet they did whatever they had to do to erase any evidence of their existence. Only the ninja that were still alive would pass on the tradition to few, which is why there are so few true masters of the art. This is just my opinion based on what I know, learned,or figure out based on any evidence I do come across.
Yes there were straight bladedswords in Japan and yes they were used by the Samurai. The problem is as you pointed out you can not carry one of the Ninjato around in the open .what I belive is yes they did carry a sword but so did everybody else, only the Samurai carried two sword sometimes three . The average person would carry a staff bo a spear and if they could afford it a Wakitashi even a Foreigner could carry one for protection from bandits as the travels the roads around Japan so a Ninja for his every day would use a Wakitashi . In my opinion there were two types of Ninjas the ones who infiltrated and attacked places . But the most skilled were the second type the spy's, even information in those times were important to have good spy's means good reliable information of what your Rivel was doing was Essential and having the means to transfer that information from one place to another in secret is a must so haveing what appears to be say a tinker who travels from town to town city to city without being stopped by either bandits or a Lords retainers then them having a Wakitashi would not be unusual
well if there one that most know it most be him Shô Kosugi you can call it Swords of Myth
Untuk seorang ninja seperti saya ini
Rasanya tak mustahil menggunakan semua jenis pedang
Namun Katana Ninjato
Lebih Ok Ditangan ❤
There definitely are paintings where straight bladed swords are carried by ashigaru. They tend to be pretty long with oval, but sometimes square, tsuba.
Were shortwr cersions pictured? Yes sometimes.
Were some ashigaru ninja? Yes i believe so.
So are the pictured straight swords "ninjato"? No. They are straight bladed infantry swords which sone ninja may have used but were not specific to ninja.
These straight bladed swords were liklely low quality being mass produced for infantry & might have influenced the concept of a ninja aword in some way.
Watch the first tmnt movie Leonardo has 2 of them
oh and if you get any of these swords make sure you get 1060 and up with the 2 pegs in it , and don't buy the mall ninja swords with stainless steel they do brake to ez , ot swords with holes in the blade that's just asking for trouble.....
Sir ನಾವು ಇದನ್ನ order ಮಾಡೋಕೆ ಆಗಲ್ವ
History isn't that sketchy.
If there's nothing to be found before a certain time, it's a pretty safe bet there was nothing there.
they do make for a very good survival weapons same for othet ninja weapons ,, yeah yeah i know guns right , guns are nice however if and i mean if we were invaded and you have a 1000 or more sodiers with guns tanks and what ever els they may have on hand i gun is a good giveaway to were ever you are , but under the cover of night one could sneek around quietly and get food water and more but if you had to you can decapitate a sodier and leve without making any noise , in the moning it's like what happened ,,
my friends and i practice scenarios on this use of a katana and the ninja-to and a few other nasty weapons that the ninja uses , but this sword even if its not historical correct sword it is still a good one to have on hand and in a few survival cache ..
I think they katanas or wakisashi, but yeah I’m pretty sure there called ninjato
This is hilarious. Brilliant
There is evidence of what is now refered to as the Ninja-to . It has been traced to the edo period ashigaru samurai foot soldiers..
There are old block paintings of ancient Japanese straight swords . Easier to sneak around.
Is one sword that you don’t have from the five element ninja I went to Japan just to get the sword from the movie done for my real Japanese guy sword maker. I have to show him the movie to get the sword done, and I found a Japanese sword maker in Japan, that made the sword for me from the movie real sword.
Well, ninjas are real because we saw them on a television. Klingons as well. And vampires. So, ninja to and bat'leth are historical weapons.
Ninjato swords are used in history my masters has one from 1583 I think could be older but still in his family
Should really do a review of major city ChinaTown stores selling Japanese swords. I know 99% are all fake but at least review how real they may look. Would be funny.
Do you ever think about doing a giveaway for one of your swords? All of sho’s ninjato is expensive and always sold out, and same with you, the sword is a momento of my child hood/representation of who I am, growing up in a martial arts family
Dami si mie o sabie ,

Real ninja hatori hanzo
🥷🏻😍
check out John-Lee Dot DE.
they have very cool Katana, inkl. the Hattori Hanzo Bride's Katana, which has a very nice Saya. just 1045 forged carbon steel though, but you can of course replace the blade if you like, of just use it for fun cutting.
There is no evidence of lightsabers ever having existed either? Doesn't stop people from collecting them😂
True! 😉
not ninja swords bro
Yes. We know. We say it several times. These are culturally invented swords, most likely. Please watch the video.
@@thedojomartialarts oh i did, and you say some good stuff but theres no “most likely” about these its most definitely not ninja. This style “ninja to” is a modern contrivance, not historical. straight out of cinema. yes there were straightblade swords in early Japan but not like this and not associated with the earliest version of ninja/shinobi etc. in any record or legit ryu ha. i think if you titled the video something more appropriate like the “myth of modern ninja of swords” itd be a better video from jump.
Jason. Everything you are rehashing we have been saying since 1985. It is all explained in the video. Please watch it with context in mind. First rule of any historian, never assume certitude if you were not there. No one is alive that lived back then, so one cannot say anything without assuming a lot. Therefore, we explain context. Thanks.

Swords of the Ninja were disposable tools
