A point that might be good to share about hay on a garden is to make sure the hay wasn’t treated with Grazon
If it has been it will kill your garden plants . I just learned that this summer . Love you guys and watch you every day. Love to see real people doing real things. Hope to

Maggie just steals the show standing there stirring and talking about it just telling us with a confident voice. She has so many skills at her young age!!
Thanks for the explanation of hay/straw and herbicides. I feel much more informed. I don’t use sprays on my garden, but it’s good to understand the different types of herbicides. The hay spread around all the garden beds looks tedious, yet keeps out your weeds and holds moisture. Beautiful gardens.!! Blackberries looks so good like I could tase them!
Thanks again for sharing your lives with us , so inspiring!✝️❤️

Those jam bars brought back memories...when I was a kid, mom always made them any time we a family get together and one of my uncles and I would sneak the container off and hide and eat the whole thing...and then we would get in trouble for not sharing. Of course we would always say it was mom's fault for making them so good. Thanks Andy, that was, to me, a really good break down of the difference between hay and straw but there is one other difference. Straw takes longer to break down and compost and since it was dead when harvested it doesn't have the nutrients that hay has so it doesn't really help in building up your soil. The food value of hay for live stock will, when used as a weed barrier, feeds your dirt just like it feeds your live stock.

The only thing we found that worked to keep moles and voles away was by opening up their digging tunnel and deposit dirty cat litter in and cover it over. We live in a wet lands area and the mole have lots of grubs.

Ain’t much better than blackberry jelly!! Between the blueberry jam and the jelly, I’m set for the year with what I made. Very good explanation on the herbicides, Andy. There’s a BIG difference between awareness and hysteria! I see “herbicide drift” blamed for all kinds of problems in the garden, most of which have nothing to do with herbicide drift. Here again folks, don’t go crazy, I’m not advocating mass herbicide use, but I will say it gets a lot of unfounded blame.

Pumping out of the creek you might get some plugs in the sprinkler nozzle bugs grass etc. keep the pump running and try using a piece of tie wire to dislodge the debris and the sprinkler will blow it on out. Might take a few tries but usually works. Hold onto that wire! Had to do that as teenager working farmers irrigation.
Always worked, though those pumps had a lot more pressure to blow the debris out.

Andy, I use red pepper to keep the squirrels out of my bird seed. I also used red pepper around the edges of my sunroom. That keeps the racoons for going under there. The red pepper does not bother birds. Try sprinkling red pepper on the row of sweet potatoes.

It has never occurred to me that folks wouldn't know the difference between hay and straw, good for you to clarify. If I have to buy hay, it's for goats so weedy its fine. Real unlikely weedy hay has been sprayed. I battle voles every year, I dig their runs every time I see one trying to convince those deviled to go somewhere else, kind of like fire ants.

I really love your channel. You are great teachers, and I learn a lot from you. We don't have voles here in Florida, but have a lot of other issues that make up for them. including moles and fire ants. I did find this about vole repellants. Maybe it will help save your sweet potatoes.
