- Had a fantastic day railfanning some Boston area hotspots on the Northeast Corridor. We visit the supreme hotspot of Readville, plus the busy stations at Ruggles, and Back Bay. AtvReadville, I was serenaded with lots of motive power variety and horn shows. I was quite impressed but even more excited about the unexpected visit of the Avelia on a test run. Later I captured rush hour action at the busy Ruggles station, finishing at Back Bay. As an epilogue, we see the Avelia test train arriving in Penn Station NY plus midnight action at Jamaica LIRR showcasing all varieties of their MU equipment. It was an exhausting but exciting day making this journey to the great city of Boston ☘️☘️☘️☘️

I studied at Northeastern University for a couple years, a mile or two south of Back Bay. I would study on the fourth floor of the library, which overlooked the NEC. MBTA FP40s, ACS-64s and Acelas for days! Made me appreciate trains so much more. Boston is a railfanners paradise!
You finally railfanned Readville, which IMO is one of the best places on the MBTA to railfan. Great job as always. I grew up near here, so this area is near and dear to my heart.
Very cool!
Great railfanning! The action and variety of trains makes the dull, gray weather fade away. Thanks Tim💚👌
Readville is absolutely one of my favorite spots on the MBTA to railfan; 4 commuter rail lines and Amtrak, and a crazy track layout, it’s awesome!
Excellent compilation with some dynamite action, sweet meets, and The Avelia!!
14:09 the pure sound of e-bells 😌
Thank you for this great video ! Delighted to see the Avelia Liberty test train, and your sequence has the best footage I have yet to see and hear these new trains !
Oh boy, Garfield central! Sorry ya had to go through that lol. Readville is quite the busy spot as I’ve learned through watching videos/experience. If possible I recommend Norwood depot as it’s a great station with horn action!
M3 cars 1968!!!
Back in 1978 when the MBTA F-40’s and the Pullman commuter rail cars were new South Station was the place to see F-40’s the GP-9s ( X -New Haven ) E-8’s ( X - Penn Central / Pennsylvania Railroad) RDC cars with X- New Haven / Penn Central R R commuter rail cars Amtrak F -40 ‘s with the Budd Amfleet cars Amtrak E-8 engines with passenger cars built by the Budd and Pullman Company it was cool to see the RS - 3 ‘s moving the Amtrak equipment around and seeing some of the B & M SW-9 engines moving some of the MBTA commuter rail cars around too
Love your videos. Beautiful sets of trains.
It’s nice to see the older one side windshield budd built M3 multi-unit sets still in service for a Long Island I assume it won’t be long until they’re all retired
😮😮😮😮 RUSH HOUR FRENZY!!!!!
Too many Garfield’s
I enjoy your train videos. Awesome commentary. You caught quite a few EMD F40PH's. Have a good day sir!
Not enough of them but more than I expected. Those are about the prettiest locomotives I’ve ever seen.

Another great video, I enjoyed seeing a busy MBTA Commuter Rail rush hour in this post-Covid rush hour. Do you know when the next Avelia run north is coming?
Not sure of the schedule
awesome 🙂
MBTA Commuter rail calls it the Fairmount Line, Last I knew (Unless they changed it) the employee timetable calls it the Dorchester Route Main Line. Same thing! haha. Good videos
Wow! I can't believe the volume of traffic... And it is an awful lot to think this new Acela is for real... it reminds me so much of the 1930s UP M10000 concept... are those cars going to stand up or is articulation going to result in a lot of trains tied up for maintenance? My days if riding the east coast rails a re way long gone, but in my time I very much enjoyed the AMTRAK Metro cars and very much the one time I took the business car on a ;Fast Mail' from New London to New York. You're putting out terrific stuff and making all of this look great! Thanks!
Appreciate that!!!
Garfields or not, this was a fantastic video ….full of action and very educational MBTA is all diesel on these lines? I guess I should know why. Thanks, Tim.
Those Garfield’s are there, so I might as well get them. I can’t have videos if I don’t have trains in them. There is some things about them that I like, but too much of them kind of gets to me.
Great Video Thank You
Oh gosh I'm from New Jersey but I use to travel up to Boston a lot by Amtrak great momories....
How can you describe an FP40PH-3C as a ""thing of beauty""? It has the aerodynamic qualities (in both directions!) of a lead brick!
You are entitled to your opinion
My neck of the woods. I am usually down there a few times a week.
Welcome to Bawstin!
That’s how a Long Islander would pronounce it
Nice video - Readville is about a mile or two from my old neighborhood of Hyde Park. (I now live in West Roxbury, and the Needham line is right down the street from me.)
One thing you notice is that hardly any trains (except the Avelia train) stop at the "main" line where the Amtrak/Providence/Stoughton trains operate. The main trains that stop at Readville are the Fairmount Line on Track 4 and the Forge Park trains on Track 5.
You are 100% correct that the Amtrak trains operated on the Fairmount line (which was also called the Midland line) from 1979 to 1987 to allow the rebuild of the SW Corridor line. There was a shuttle from South Station to (old) Back Bay until the SW Corridor reopened in 1987. If I remember correctly, they had a two car Budd RDC train (or maybe a GP9 hauling two Budd cars).
Ruggles is where the Amtrak trains accelerate from Back Bay to Route 128, not quite reaching the 125mph max until they're about a half mile outside of Ruggles. From Route 128 to Providence is where the Acela picks up its max speed of 150mph.
No scheduled stops on any Providence/Stoughton trains at Readville. Also, the Fairmount is Track #4 & Franklin track is Track #5.
@@MbtaVideoClips You can tell how long I've been out of Hyde Park/Readville...:P I've corrected my post.
Excellent video! bravo!
Nice catches
55 minutes of Northeast Corridor Action! Did you have any places to warm up? Must've been real cold out there!
My feet were cold, but I had a warm coat on and thermal underwear so it wasn’t that bad. Adrenaline and enthusiasm kept me warm.
@@3985uprr I always have a car next to me so I can warm up fast!
Nice to finally meet ya at Readville!!! Keep up the great content!
Thanks Mr. Engineer. I heard there were some problems with that equipment later on.
@@3985uprr lol I’m just a conductor, but yea we experienced some mechanical defects a little further down the line. The main issue was the fire alarm malfunctioning. There was no fire but for some reason the alarm was going off.
I saw the equipment arriving to New York and there are a lot of people around it with emergency warnings being displayed to evacuate
sounds like it's got somethin good on the back too 😆-RRHG 2024
Wow! At 22:34 that’s me!! Too bad I didn’t say hi to you Tim! I had no idea it was you filming.
Is the cab usually open for a RFW (I know when I last went to Boston the entire cab car was closed ): ) or was the engineer nice and gave you permission after asking?
Where were you?
@@winstonpx North side they only open cab car during the rush hour. South side it can vary, but the old colony generally has it open no matter what (especially if its a flat/double mixed set)
2:35 what a dumb move. The realistic chance that you trip on a rail or slip on the snow and get sawed in half is not worth the two minutes you save.
Wow !! That guy was really a fool. Seeing is believing. Engineers see nonsense like that all the time, including by crackpot motorists taking awful chances at grade crossings. The stuff engineer's nightmares are made from.
@2:40 Wonder if the idiot crossing the tracks tripped over the rail when the train appeared to be about 50 yards away could gotten up and out of the way in the 5 seconds it took the train to reach the spot he crossed!
27:49 Ambulance Siren
As much as we railfans say it, I have to admit, the HSPs are better than the REBUILT F40s from an operation stand point. The F40PH-3C acceleration is unacceptably slow.
The Avelia sure seems to have limited forward visibility with its small windshield.
I don't understand why the Providence Line trains won't stop at Readville... if only they would, there would be an effective transfer point where passengers could switch between lines without having to go all the way to Boston and incur the city terminal zone fare surcharge. Also all Franklin Trains should run via Fairmount except during rush hours... the Fairmount Line's surrounding neighborhoods are some of the most transit-starved in Boston and they have the track capacity to run such service
If I want to so much is go from Readville to Forest Hills, I have to go up to Ruggles and back.
@@3985uprra few rush hour franklins also make forest hills
2:40 how to die 101
Not only did you see your F40's, but also some of the last remaining Kawasaki cab cars assigned to the south side! Most of them have been moved north, and soon all (and probably a couple rotems) will be moved north to replace the remaining bombardier comet cabs.
I notice the doubledeckers all have power vestibule doors. Some used to have manual doors. The comets look tired and still have manual doors. I know of no commuter railroad to North America that has a mixture of power and non-powered doors on their trains. My next trip will be to get north side stuff.
@@3985uprr Yeah, only half the 900 series double decker cars have the handles, which mostly are north as well. Also, if you come up north, I’d suggest Anderson RTC or Wedgemere, for its Amtrak Downeaster trains (stops at anderson, skips wedgemere) & the frequent Lowell Line service during rush hour. There’s also 3 haverhill trips a day that run nonstop down the lowell line & wildcat
@@3985uprr The comets and MBB cars also have door controls, but they are left unused/unwired/etc. 200 and 1500 cars had them activated when the old colony lines opened, but were disabled later on. You can still see the door panels on 200 cars, all others are left covered up.
@@3985uprr When the Kawasakis were rebuilt, all power door equipment was activated.
@@3985uprrIf you want to come north, I’d come asap lol. Only 9 bombardier comet CTC-1B cabs left in service. All other cab cars on the north side are the Kawasaki CTC-4 Bilevels.
32:31 disco party in lower level of cab car
I guess I'm in the minority but I prefer the look of the OG Acela to the new Avelia.
Where r u from am from Massachusetts I know exactly where u r
Long Island
So does MBTA no longer have single-level cab cars?
I think they still use them on the north side. Next time I go up there maybe in a couple of months I’ll check out the northside. I know much of the older power is on the north side.
They have a couple left on the lines out of North Station. Rapidly being replaced by the 1700 Kawasaki Bi-Levels though, so see them while you can.
@@MbtaVideoClips I'll assume then, that as more bi-levels arrive, both single-level cab cars & coaches alike will be replaced.

32:22 four trains one clip!
Avelia Liberties cleared key hurdle, hopefully they’ll be in service this year. Why do you hate the HSP46 locomotives?
They just look ugly and I’m an EMD guy
Avelia stopped for you to film it
Had a stop signal at Transfer switch
When does the Amelia start rev service?
*Avelia
Those are test trains.
Latest report says late 2024 or (more likely) early 2025...
MBTA should invest in Siemens Charger locomotives, preferably the SC-44s!!!
