    I’ve always viewed Omni Man’s speech to Mark as really to himself. Trying to tell Mark not to get attached he’s to Earth because he’ll outlive it, maybe he’s also trying to convince himself that he truly is mission-minded and he hasn’t lost sight of his Viltrumite purpose

    • @SwordTune

      Those parts, and also the bits about Debbie being like a pet, or her life being worthless, or about living among "animals", or being able to make another kid in seventeen more years... those were _definitely_ him trying to convince himself that the people who'd made him appreciate Earth and humanity didn't matter as much as his mission and Viltrum. He failed, and Mark's _"you, dad, I'll still have you"_ was the drop that spilled the glass and made him realize that he'd gone so native that he _couldn't_ put Viltrum before them, no matter how much he tried.

    • @sebastianjoseph2828
      @sebastianjoseph2828 2 года назад +35

      Exactly, I love that at it's core Nolan's struggle is the fear of an essentially immortal man too afraid to get attached to (and inevitably lose) his loved ones. So this whole fight he's lashing out before he accepts it. Imagine being a human in a world where everyone else's lifespan is 4 days. You'd go mad.

      "Trying to tell Mark not to get attached he’s to Earth because he’ll outlive it, [...]"
      This reminds me of my favorite theory/interpretation of why Mark getting his powers changed everything.
      Before he developed Viltrumite powers, he could have just been a normal human the entire time. And humans don't live as long as Viltrumites. So it could have been that Omni Man, until Mark got his powers, thought he would just outlive Debbie and Mark.
      So that they'd never have to know where he really comes from.
      But once Mark is a Viltrumite, it changes things. Now, Mark would normally outlive him. So at this point, Omni Man only digs his hole deeper the longer he delays his mission.

    • @sebastianjoseph2828
      @sebastianjoseph2828 2 года назад +14

      @@bravado2809 Absolutely. Like they talk about at 21:00. Nolan thought he could take a relatively short break from his mission and get back to it in 80 years or so when Mark and Debbie were dead. But surprise! Mark's going to live for ages now. The longer Mark doesn't know Viltrum's mission, the stronger he gets while not being onboard with conquest. So Nolan suddenly had to start his conquest while also finding a way to indoctrinate his son.

  • @JPooger
    @JPooger 2 года назад +207

    BTW, Omni-man is estimated to be like 2,000 years old.
    Its theorized that omni-man was just planning to wait out the lives of mark and debbie, if mark never got powers, he could just wait like a hundred years or two and when they were dead THEN he could do his conquering, i think the planet conquer timetable for him was like 500 years or something, so it was fine to wait that "short" time of 200

    • @sylverlune
      @sylverlune 2 года назад +63

      This makes a lot of sense, no wonder Omni said it probably be better if Mark never got his powers. Cause now that he does, he will live really long which Omni will have to explain to his superiors why he hadn't reported about a compatible species.

    • @Darkpara1
      @Darkpara1 2 года назад +25

      When your species lives for thousands of years, you can play the long game. But it was more about seeing if the Viltrumite genes carry through a species and develop powers, since there's so few pure blooded Viltrumites left at this point. They need to replenish their population.

    Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons knocked it out of the fucking park with the voice acting for the finale. This episode made me fall in love with Mark's character, similar to what episode 7 did with Cecil for me. I thought Mark was fine throughout the show, felt like your average kid in most of these situations, but was kinda lukewarm about him, until his confrontation with Omni-man.
    "I don't give a shit about Viltrum! And I don't care if I live a fucking million years, this is my home, and I won't let you destroy it."

      This is legitimately the first episode where I really saw Mark as a hero. Its one thing to have incredible power and sort of wing it through situations using that power, but he leaves EVERYTHING on the table here.
      He KEEPS trying to save lives, KEEPS fighting his father and refuses to give up on him. Even as he's bent and broken, even when his father tries to tear down everything he cares about and show him why he shouldn't his will simply won't bend.

    This series doesn't just ask "What if Superman was evil?" it's "What if Krypton was evil?" as the consequences of the premise are so much bigger than just what's happening on Earth, because yeah if you had a bunch of evil Supermen who are among the strongest of the strong, then galactic conquering would absolutely be on their to-do list.
    This makes this my favorite evil Superman story, it does not pull its punches in showing how devastating it really would be if Superman and his fellow Kryptonians decided to just fuck shit up.

      Nah, in the DC universe there are tons of beings that either match Kryptonians in strength or are flat out above them. In the Invincible universe there are seldom beings that can match Viltrumites in strength, which is why the Viltrumites haven't been stopped.
      If Kryptonians tried conquering the universe they would be defeated in about a year or so. There are Martians, Tameraneans, Daxamites, Lanterns, and Guardians of the universe, all strong enough to end Kryptonians permanently.
      Also, if Superman tried soloing the Justice League he would get eviscerated in 30 seconds. The Invincible universe has weaker characters, so that's why Omni man was able to do the shit he did. If Superman tried taking over Earth there's the Justice League, Teen Titans, and even villains smart enough to take him down, such as Lex Luthor.

    Great reaction and analysis. One little thing I haven't seen people comment on a lot. After the "I'd still have you" moment when Nolan is staring at his hands, shocked at what he's done, Mark says "Dad?" Nolan reacts just like a dad worried about his hurt child. I think that's what really pushes him over the edge to cry. Not only does he realize Mark still loves him after the beating. Nolan realizes his instincts as a father can't be overcome. Then he breaks down and flees.

      Imagine being a comic reader of the series from 10+ years ago (depending on how far from the beginning you found out about the series). You get all of these insane characters, and situations, and stories, and things that really hadn't been done before this (people don't seem to understand how much Kirkman innovated, more with this series than with Walking Dead), and even though there's a significant fanbase, you know that a LOT of people just DON'T KNOW, and it kinda sucks because you have so many things you want to talk about with people. But you deal with it and move on.
      And then, almost TWENTY YEARS LATER, 2-3 years after the series finally, impossibly ends, you see LIVING PROOF that a series is coming out. A TELEVISION series. Better yet, an ANIMATED television series. You get excited but try not to get your hopes up, because these things can end up getting messed up a lot in the process. You've seen it happen before. So you temper that excitement.
      Then, you see the casting, and you worry a bit because a lot of animated movies and series that use movie and television actors instead of voice actors can tend to be...a bit bland? (A lot of great "regular" actors don't get that voice acting is different and requires way more vocalization of your emotions, efforts, etc., and as a result they end up flat.) So you temper your excitement.
      And then the trailer comes out. And it looks GOOD. Oh man. Careful, you've been burned before.
      And then the show comes out and it's SO FREAKING GOOD. The actors are doing a great job. Steven Yeun is putting REAL EMOTION into his role. And even if a few things are different, it makes sense given the amount of time since the start of the comic and now, and it actually works, and even the things you wish were there could come later, or even be forgiven if they're just gone.
      And the action is incredible. And the brutality is insane. And the heart of the comic is RIGHT THERE in the show. They didn't miss. They KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. They got Cecil nailed. They got Omni-Man down pat. They got MARK right. Hell, they got BATTLE BEAST right!! Even Titan gets a slightly expanded role and it's GREAT! They managed to keep the world building and the character development and *just* enough of the R rating to satisfy all but the most contrarian of comic fans. They absolutely NAILED it. AND PEOPLE FUCKING LOVE IT.
      I don't know how to describe the feeling, honestly. It's so rare that it almost never happens. That years-long worry followed by the absolute catharsis of it being done right and done well. Happiness, relief, satisfaction...it's just so good. The really, actually did it.
      And the best part is that THE STORY IS ALREADY ALL THERE. Enough for a full 5-7 seasons like someone above me said (Kirkman loves to plan this stuff out, even if it went way off the rails with Walking Dead). Enough for even more, honestly. As jam packed as this season was, THEY LEFT THINGS OUT. That's more potential for future episodes. Potential for increased season length in the future. Maybe 10 per season now? Maybe 12? They could still do 5-7 seasons easy. Seriously, I am drastically underselling it when I say that Season One barely scratched the surface. This is a BIG story. And Kirkman has two decades of experience to do it better, to expand and improve it. There's really no need to worry about the story dropping off of a cliff, because as someone who has read the entire series, it does not disappoint. Some may disagree, but I loved the entire damn run. It's fan-freaking-tastic. I hope you all get to see it.

    I feel like the comparisons to The Boys comes naturally to most people but I would describe the differences between them as The Boys being gritty and realistic about super powers but in a much more, as you say 'bleak' way, and The Boys is in many ways a more cynical deconstruction and almost satire of superheroes as a concept, it basically wants to poke holes in the idea of superheroes, Invincible on the other hand I would say unapologetically loves superheroes and what superheroes can be, Invincible completely embraces the superhero genre just with the added twist of a more realistic portrayal of how super powers would actually work, but it's still essentially a love letter to classic superheroes, it feels like I'm just watching a more mature Justice League.

    • @Birthday888
      @Birthday888 2 года назад +4

      The difference in their message, in my opinion, is that The Boys asks the question, "What would superheroes be like if they existed in our world?", while Invincible asks the question, "What realistic consequences would there be in a world of superheroes?"
      You can see the difference simply by the fact that The Boys doesn't feature any "supervillains".
      One brings superheroes into our reality, the other puts reality into superhero comics.

    my headcanon is that part of Nolan's logic and his shift when Mark gets his powers is that he'd probably settled on letting Mark and Debbie die of natural causes, live out their short lives happy and oblivious and afterward he would get to work, from his perspective it's like spending maybe a couple weeks or months with someone working on a project or something until its run it's course, so taking a little detour to let them have happy lives doesn't seem like a big deal, but once Mark got his powers he realized Mark is going to have to be brought in on the plan, waiting for him to die is no longer an option

    you know what's the scariest thing? I understand perfectly why the Viltrumites are the way they are. When you live for thousands of years and have unimaginable strength compared to all other races in the galaxy. It becomes very difficult to empathize with them.
    We don't care about ants or bees...and they change many generations in one human life. So do the Viltrumites... everyone else is too fleeting and fragile for them to feel empathy as an equal.
    It's a terrifying idea that such a race exists, because I can't imagine how humanity can stop them.

    • @joelsasmad
      @joelsasmad 2 года назад

      I suspect that the whole "might makes right" attitude of the Viltrimites here is goimg to be revealed to be government brainwashing to control their people. Killing off half your population wouldn't really improve the overall species that much to justify the loss of numbers but it makes a lot more sense as a tactic to get rid of those who might disagree with an insane regimes policies.
      As for comparing ants to humans it isn't just a difference of power and lifespan for us but that ants literally don't have the same capacity for emotion, expression, invention, or individuality. Humans by comparison have been shown to be potentially as smart and capable of emotion as Viltrimites. So I am more of a mind that this attitude is an artifical result of a life of brainwashing than a natural result of near immortality and power.
      Magic seems to be a thing and I doubt the viltrimites really have any protection against being literally turned into ants. The Hail-Mary, despite being stunned by electricity was physically powerful enough that Omniman couldn't beat it, so maybe they could try cloning it and controlling the clones through electric shocks? Vilitrimites are powerful, but given enough time to prepare this earth has options.

    • @feodaron89
      @feodaron89 2 года назад

      @@joelsasmad I agree that of course humans are more advanced than ants. But I still don't think the Veltrumite government is using any real brainwashing. It's more like the main political line they're promoting. "See how much better we are than everyone else, let's conquer the universe." And I think that this idea got a lot of approval in their society because "yes ... we really are better than everyone else." And this "purge of the weak" ... I think it was a civil war where they killed everyone who was opposed to conquering the galaxy.
      So all the remaining Viltrumites support the idea of conquest and superiority. That's how I see it at least.
      And objectively, I don't think Earth has any realistic chances if the Viltrumite empire takes us seriously. Yes, it's possible to defeat individual members of their race... but once they feel resistance and send a squad of like 5.... I am sure that this will crush any resistance that the Earth could throw against them even with Mark at his maximum power.
      The only reason the Earth hasn't been subdued yet is because Nolan decided to have a 20 year long weekend and basically took a break instead of actual subjugation.

It doesn't matter how fleeting the lifespan of an ant is, if they suddenly started talking to us the amount of people willing to thoughtlessly kill them would plummet.

      It's a feature specific to that room. The lights are narrowband light sources only emitting extremely specific frequencies of light. Since that frequency has been blocked to the human eye, anything lit up by only those frequencies is rendered unobservable. Normal natural light or any non-narrowband light-source would light up everything and make it visible again.
      The presentation is kind of scuffed though, as everything would be a black void instead of a white one.

    I think the reason Omni-Man needs a Earthling hybrid is because he needs proof that Earth can be a breeding ground for their species. I mean it makes when he states he needs "17 more years and can always start again, make another kid." He needs a hybrid that can keep their powers probably, it's the problem with killing half your species and then expanding into the galaxy, numbers.

    The show is basde on a graphic novel with 100+ issues, so they have a lot of stories to tell.

    Just a well built narrative. I mean they do have the comics to help them which is a huge help.

    Lol this makes me realise the Amazon has carved out its own niche of superhero shows which basically boils down to add more blood. And honestly that great because I don't see other studios making stuff like this.

    That pet line both makes and breaks it for me like one one hand I feel mark and am like ur not callin my mother a pet and on the other I get it from Omni mans perspective cuz I love my fur baby’s and I would literally risk my life and maybe even kill for them if needed but in the end of the day I know I’m gonna out live them and that there will be others but that doesn’t mean I don’t love them with all my heart it’s just a difference in life times

    You know it was this episode that really made me think about the title everyone makes jokes about how invincible is a optimistic name.
    But that's because people are thinking about it physically, Mark has just went through hell on Earth his own father was the greatest threat to the planet and he found out his entire life was a lie.
    And yet he still wants to finish high School still wants to be a hero, a lesser person would have been broken but Mark keeps going.
    That speech at the end with omniman about what would he have in 500 years, if you really think about it omniman is it talking to Mark he's talking to himself, he's trying to validate his own insecurity.
    That's why what Mark said hit him so hard, if he was really so dead set then he wouldn't have been so swayed,it's why he wished Mark never got his powers.
    Because when Mark got his powers it basically changed things it meant he could no longer just live his life, if Mark never got his powers he and his mother would have gotten hold leaving Nolan by himself where he could have then conquered the planet by himself and it wouldn't have been a huge deal.
    But in a way Nolan became human that's why when Mark got his powers the immediately was hesitant because he knew he would have to go through with his plan

    I'm sure some folks took this away from the fight already, but for those that didn't: Omni Man lost. With all the physical contact/destruction, this was psychological battle. Although Mark was beaten to a pulp, Omni gave up, leaving Mark the winner.

    I get that the show writers wanted Amber to be better than her comics counterpart, which leaned a little hard into the 'dumb blonde' archetype, but having them come back together like this was one of the sour notes of the season 1 finale.
