He was hilarious but my favorite was Chiho, with a close second torn between Sadao for his hilarious absurdity and Shiro for his overreactive personality.
To be fair, the devil really wasn't that "evil" in the old world, he just followed its rules and systems. We don't even know when the war started, could've been hundreds of years ago and all the devil did was wage it efficiently. People die in wars, that's nothing new. That's not evil from the devil's point of view, he just followed the rules already in place, the rules that stated the light must battle the dark or whatever.
Frikgeek This is info from the light novel vol 1. 1741 - 1799(~) Satan wages war with the Demon Realm, 1870 Satan becomes Demon Lord, 200X (3-4 years ago) Satan begins Conquest of Human Realm, 201X (2 years ago) Emilia taken by church, Emilia's town is razed + Father dies (Lucifer Responsible?), Emilia begins training, 201X (6 months ago) Satan is defeated, escapes to earth, 201X (1-2 months ago) Satan joins MgRonalds. That's almost 140 years of peace with Satan as Demon lord before the cr@p hit the fan.
There's several more revelations but there's a backstory part that is very responsible for the events happening the way they do. Basically, demons NEED human fear to survive and a faction was already planning a full massacre of the world. Basically, the implied reason why the Demon Lord orders the invasion was to ensure the survival of his subjects and because the radical faction of demonkind was ready to murder humanity,not just invade them. Also, according to more recent novels there's more than one "Satan", Sadao is just the last (so we don't know when exactly the current one came into power).
@@LeonGun8 not necessary HUMAN fear and despair but just fear and despair.. Since the demon realm became peaceful when maou become king there were low fear and despair which is there source of their long lives. Without it the demons would die. So maou planned to "conquer" the human world for the fear to sustain themselves.
Well, there is always the light novels. There's currently ten out in English, and the anime only covered the first two. Though of course that is a novel and not a manga or anime. There is he occasional picture, but that's all. Everything else is up to the imagination. Still, it's a continuation to the story.

It was so weird how in the show, they kept on hinting at some sort of corruption in the Church, and then with the flip-flop-ness of the Devil's personality, it would make it out to be that the Church is the real evil one. But it never seemed to go anywhere? Even though they mention it like every 2 episodes?
The church is evil. So was the Devil. The difference is that the Devil admits his mistakes as time goes on and makes an effort to change. The Church on the other hand would rather not face their mistakes. They weren't trying to say who was evil or good. They were trying to show how neither side was truly right.
DevilHunter1994 Maybe, but Satan became the Demon Lord 300 years before the start of the series, and the war started 3-4 years before Satan was defeated. It wouldn't surprise be if Satan started his conquest because of something the Church did, and they used it as propaganda to wipe out the demons while hiding their own sins.
I think him choosing to play by Earth's rules stems from how he gets his magic, which is finite by the way. He gets it through really strong negative emotions. Since there wasn't much of that he basically went, "may as well make the most of it"
Did it bother anyone else that they went out of their way to show chi using her archer skills, but they never showed it in the actual anime just the opening and last ending?
I think a good explanation to why the Devil flips from pure evil to decent human being. Quick explanation of the good character, she has a problem because for all her life she was told she is the one who will kill the dark lord so she is lost when there is no dark lord, cause he turned good. Similarly the devil has been told his whole life that he has to conquer the world and told he has to do it using the rules of the world (in fantasy world, military might, in ours economic), so the fact that he turns into such a goody too shoes makes sense because he was always told that he had to conquer the world while following the rules.

I really really liked this show and I hope maybe it will get a season 2 some day, but there was one thing is this show that contantly annoyed me, the Hero. Look I understand she doesn't trust the devil, but it becomes really annoying when everytime she sees him, until the near end, she constantly thinks he's going to cause trouble. Heck even after he defends the humans she still thinks he's going to destroy everything. I just wish she had calmed down once in a while.
But you have to understand that to her, the devil is literally the devil (no pun intended). He is the one who commanded his armies to kill countless, and also responsible for the death of the Hero's father and her traumatic upbringing in the church. So that's probably why she does not trust him.
Gaston Sandstig I've heard that so many times but here's the flaw there. If he really was all that evil wouldn't he just let the other demons do as they want when they arrive? It would of conserved his power that he had been saving up since he arrived but instead he takes it upon himself and in fact sacrifices that power that he needed to return home to defeat the other demons. That's the exact opposite of evil in my eyes and she witnesses this first hand.

Wasn't it revealed somewhere that Maou wasn't actually evil in the first place? I seem to remember them saying that he was just a figurehead and the other demons did all the bad things without his consent. It's been a while since I watched the show, though, so I don't remember all that well. Maybe it was in the manga. Overall, "Devil is a Part Timer" was a funny parody of the usual fantasy genre.
It wasn't at the time this was made. Especially since Arkada is Canadian and we get a bit hosed on Netflix releases.It did recently come out on Netflix here, but the fact that it WAS recent, well...
Arkada, I dare you to review Nichijou. All 24 episodes of it. It doesn't have an english dub, but by the time you're done watching it, you're gonna feel it just doesn't need one.
Some things here: 1. As far as I know, the source material is a LN, not a manga, so it's a "Read the LN" ending :P 2. As far as I know, in the LN it actually is the case that Mao isn't actually bad. It's just that the environment forced him to it. Born as basically the most powerfull devil of all, he was taught that he has to defeat/kill the humans and become the overlord. So he was simply forced into the role (kinda similiar to how Emi was "forced" into the role of the hero as she was a half-angel (her mother was an angel) and could use ther "heavenly silver" which allowed her to go toe to toe with the devil overlord. This might just me confusing fanfiction with what is actually in the LN, so take those two things with a grain of salt ^^
This is why I like that the anime ended when it did. *spoilers ahead! Be warned!* Now, I know that Emi and Maou is the number one ship by the fans, but it is a weird ship to me and is the only ship I actually question. And to even bring in a character just to push these two together is so forced that it makes me cringe. I honestly want Maou and Chiho together, but I'm totally fine if they won't. But to push Emi no Maou together like that is beyond bad and the most awful excuse to get two enemies together to, in the end, fall in love with each other. Not only that, but to include a "he was actually alive all along" moment for Emi really makes me facepalm. It's sad to see one if my favorite anime take such a fan fictional turn and people treating it like canon.
Maou wasn't born the most powerful demon of all. He was a good person because he was raised by an angel. He wasn't forced or anything but what he did was necessary. It's all explained in later volumes.

spoiler . . . . . . actually satan was one of the most weak devil, like you saw in the anime the demons "eat" bad emotions, in the demon world there was a lot of wars between the demons but satan conquered all the demons world and stopped all wars that were happening there, so there was no more bad emotions to eat. there is no food in the demons world, so he decided to invade the human world in order to create more bad emotions so his race could survive but all went out of control. when he arrives to the earth and realizes than demons can survive with human food and without demonic powers he decide to change ecause he has never wanted to do bad things
Best Anime of 2013? Well this is definitely my personal favourite Anime of 2013, YES I think it's better then Attack on Titan but then I have a Bias for good comedies lol. Great Review btw, I didn't think you'd ever review this lol.
Did you found kill la kill funny? Because I did and I really like Kill la Kill kind of fun, so what I am asking, if I liked kill la kill (as a comedy) am I going to like this show?
Lega I actually dislike Kill la Kill and found it quite boring and repetitive. The only parts that I even found remotely funny were the Mako Moments. Mako was the only reason I even watched that show to completion, i don't know if that helps, but I'd say The Devil is a Part Time is definitely worth a shot. If you don't like by about maybe the half way point which is about 6 episodes in, then you can drop it. Although you could probably drop it earlier, it's been almost a year since I've seen it so I don't know when it picks up.

So I literally just finished this anime and it was fairly good. Not gonna lie I laughed my ass off so many times, definitely where Urushigaraha (or however you spell the name I just butchered) said "YOLO" ugh I died. My only thing was that I wanted to see a bit more action, like I felt the show had some real potential to be funny AND action-packed. And by that I mean more of Maou's evil side and a big more about Ente Isla. If I can share my own personal theory as to why Sadou isn't the MWAHAHA I'M SO EVIL devil is because he's playing the long con. He's drastically weakened in this world, because whatever laws of physics or what have you don't act the same in regards to magic. I would assume he's familiarized himself with our world's weaponry, as proven when he exclaims "Is some one shooting at us?" and when it the distinction between "regular and magic" bullets come into play. I can only speculate how much of the character we see is Sadou with this theory in place. On the one hand it's not that hard to believe that the lord of all demons didn't get much interactions with humans and what he knew came through reports or other not so accurate means. The other is that he doesn't view other humans in our world as humans at all. This conclusion coming from the fact that he and Ashia turned into humans after passing through the portal either gave him a new perspective or he believes that the humans may be stranded daemons interbred with humans or something similar. And it could very well be Ashia is in on it, the way he acts most of the time is in the role of the "responsible and sensible adult" but he doesn't go into a fight without his cape? It could be he's on orders to keep his distance and wait in the wings if something goes sideways. I like to think that Mao's a genuinely nice guy but he also has his nefarious side. When the tunnel collapsed and he got his demonic form back, I'm certain he could feel little miss hero charging up for an attack, given how easy it was for her to feel out his power. but instead of moving to defend he does what he know will keep the hero's attention, help others. He knows she knows people are injured and he also knows that as long as he's saving lives Amelia is not going to stop him. It could be construed he talked his way out of a fight by letting his actions speak for him. That's why I think he's such a great "potential" villain. Its not the tyrant devil who keeps the world in chains and is just begging for some do gooder to kick his ass. He's the silver tongued devil that you like, instead of fighting the hero he uses her. He has a code of conduct and he protects his underlings. Think about that on a larger scale, for example (minor spoilers) When Mao charges out of the MgRonalds to save Chi, his coworker, and everyone else during the season climax, what happens afterward? Word gets back to the MgRonalds that one of their workers was in trouble and he went to save her (minus all the fantasy stuff). Consider the following, do you think the other employees are going to question Mao after that? on whether or not he's a good guy? anyone working under him is going to give their utmost loyalty to him because of that act. Mao is corporate evil, Lawful Evil if you will. He's not outwardly manipulative and people enjoy his company. This is the guy who will sit on a throne, not because he battled his way there, but because those who follow him put him there willingly. A tyrant you willingly bow down to because you like him is a thousand times more dangerous than one you bow to in fear. And I suspect that's what Mao is, though not much in the anime directly supports this assumption, I have yet to find something that would contradict it.
Just rewatching the reviews for kicks but you bring up the fact that the devil is willing to follow the rules of our world to a T. As someone who also plays table top RPGs (pathfinder specifically) this falls right into line. Devils are always lawful, evil yes, but always lawful evil. Its the demons who don't care about rules or structure
The answer to all your gripes and complaints lies in the LNs. It explains Sadao's motivation behind world domination and develops Emi's character a LOT. They've actually become my strongest ship in any anime now that I've read the novels.
Well The Devil is a Part Timer is getting a second season so the ending on this season is alright to me. I found out that The Devil is a Part Timer is getting a second season because I was able to find a official trailer for this anime for season 2 but I can't remember where it is because I just ended up finding it when I tried to search for season 2 before I found out that it did not have one yet. So if you want to watch the second season when it is out you need to find it in it's Japanese name which is called Hataraku Maou-sama!
0.o, seriously? Loved that Anime, guess I got some researching to do :P Edit: Did some researching. I can say for a fact, there is *no official/confirmed* information for a season 2. However, there was indeed a Japanese website that had information on it with a video, but the the site was soon taken down. Either it was *fake* or *leaked*, take your pick. It isn't unlikely for a season 2 due to the fact that there is plenty of source material to work with now since season 1 and the Blu-ray sales weren't awful as well as the LN being well received in Japan. But my main point is, no *official* confirmation for a season 2 :/
Tommy Blouin Well I did say I only found a trailer that I think is official but I could be wrong. The reason I think it is official that it showed legit anime seance that where not from this season of The Devil is a Part Timer and when I checked it Japanese name of the anime it's episode list had no special episodes so as there was no other parts of this season of The Devil is a Part Timer that could of proved that the trailer was fake so I myself this that trailer was official.

I dunno. I think some moe dubs are pretty good like k-on and lucky star. (I would say madoka magica, but it just have the moe look that's pretty much it) and I think most comedy dubs(from what I have seen) is fun to watch.

Unlikey Mao has Chiho. Emi is much more of a personality-match with Ashiya (and they even get along), and if you note, Suzuno and Lucifer actually act like a couple a lot of the time...

Only if you assume she's Tsundere, and there's not much evidence of that. Additionally, Chiho is pretty jealous and even competes with Suzuno for no other reason than that Suzuno is hiding her intentions - Yet she isn't the least bit threatened by Emi once she knows what's going on. Thing is, sorry folks, but this actually _isn't_ a harem-show... Not to be harsh, but it seems a lot of people don't really get this show. I even had a person once try to tell me that Mao and Ashiya were "obviously" a gay couple...

I have to hand it to you, Mr Arkada, you know how to endorse a show. I wouldn't have considered it before, but I'm glad I gave it a try. It reminds me of my days in retail (I still wake up screaming) But in all seriousness, thank you. I'm taking my time in between jobs a little harder than I like to admit, and seeing a fish-out-of-water comedy really helps.
A couple of notes as a lover of this show: first the back of the first volume of the manga says "It's tough being evil when you have to pay the rent" in huge letters. Second there is an ongoing plot that things are building towards but they push you into it so slowly and the story paces itself in a way where you hardly ever have to give up the slice of life feel and humor... in fact... they went through two volumes worth of content and didn't even get to the plot...
Seems like a show I could have liked...if so much of episode 2 wasn't people acting like Satan and Emilia were a thing, sandwiched between reasons why they shouldn't be a thing. Look, I liked Toradora as much as the next guy, but nobody thought they'd work well together until _after_ they started getting along, you know?
I liked the ending~ Purely because Urushihara got the last lines of the series (not counting the OVA) And purely because those lines had something to do with him working too hard and wanting some fried chicken xD

This was quite honestly one of my favorite series from 2013. Just describing the concept of the Devil working at McDonalds is funny to hear about, but to actually witnessing it unfold in such a normal manner is comedy gold. If you're looking for a comedy series, you have to check this one out.
I like the new look for the ratings/suggestions screen, Ark, but by the time you've put the recommended animes and places to stream things from, the whole thing looks rather crowded. Maybe make some elements smaller to add some spacing around them all? Just a suggestion. :) Also, I've heard of this anime before, but haven't really thought much of it before now. I may give it a look!
I just got done watching this show and I had this feeling that it was missing something, but I couldn't really pin down what. After watching this review I realized it was probably because the show could have been so much more. If it had gone the route of "the devil wasn't really that bad" I probably would have liked it more.
Nice review, though I was surprised to see that you missed that Hataraku was a Light Novel originally. Not to say that this should change the perception of the plot, you can only judge it by what they adapted of course, but I think it should be kept in mind that some aspects of this show were setting up for future seasons if they had had the popularity to continue it.

This show had potential. The light heartedness like killed the show for me. It was just too much. The fact that lucifer was kept around was a big wtf. Him and Amelia had like no beef after the city attack. The ending didn't really wrap anything up. It's like the 12 episodes preceding it meant nothing. All in all, this was is a funny show but don't take it too serious despite the serious undertones.
OmegaMagnusDA lucifer was the devils subordinate, they said this in the show so thats why he didnt kill him or anything. He gave him his beating and taught him a lesson
Hmmm, it's so odd seeing this show get so much praise. It's so incredibly mediocre to me and rarely ever funny while featuring dull characters and a completely wasted premise. I never felt like the MC was actually The Devil, his personality change was too drasticly different from world to world. They all act like standard slice of life teenagers except with the twist that they're all supposed to be from a different reality, regardless how much they don't act like it. It's a lot like Ao No Exorcist for me, good first episode, the rest is bland.Not bad looking or poorly acted, just... not worth my time. Expected it to be great, left feeling like I hadn't watched anything at all, it left no impression other than negative things on me.
SlyBlue But even as a comedy it's mediocre. Hetalia, Baka and Test, Shin-Chan. Sgt. Frog, and My Bride is a Mermaid, all out-class The Devil is a Part-Timer as a comedy (Well in my opinion).
SlyBlue I watch the whole series your not missing anything. Its basically the same joke (the main character getting tortured) though out the show. And while there is character development it isn't worth it
"Yay for reading the manga"... Well, that is the purpose of 99% of anime over the past 20 years. Most stories are animated for sole purpose of promoting the manga/light novel. Have to take it for what it is.
Just a quick note in case anyone cared. In the manga, Emi does mention to Sadou about how he used to be. And he does briefly mention (after telling their daughter a story that is based off his own life... If I remember right) that the more power he got, he forgot who he was and his original motives, which was to create a land where the demons could live without fear. So coming to the human world with little to no power, was like a new beginning for him, one which he could do right this time
Hey Glass Reflection, could you check out and review the RomCom "Lovely Complex"? It's been out since 2007, and actually finished where the manga ended (if you don't include Lovely Complex Plus, which is more of a prequel+somewhat-epilogue sorta deal). Granted I've heard there were some changes/adjustments and dropped arcs between the original manga and the anime (particularly the manga's 2nd half), but I loved the anime! Kinda unique in that the characters apparently talk in Kansai-ben as opposed to the Tokyo dialect (i.e. using "aho"instead of "baka"); makes sense since the mangaka originated from Osaka.
YO! So I watched this anime after not having been watched anime in well over a year and I have to say this anime was pretty damn hilarious and well worth spending the 6-7 hours watching. This anime just brought me back into the loving embrace of what anime is. This guy said it all, but as a personal preference always watch the anime in the original Japanese with subs it's just better. I hope there is a season 2!!
I've actually only ever noticed two forms of product placement in anime. The first one i forget but i think it was in K. The second is in arpeggio of blue steel, a very very well placed PVC figure around the halfway mark of the series on a shelf in the back kind of either advertising or confirming soon to be released merchandise. It wasn't in your face at all and the reason i was actually able to notice it was because of my 50" samsung.

To be fair, the devil really wasn't that "evil" in the old world, he just followed its rules and systems. We don't even know when the war started, could've been hundreds of years ago and all the devil did was wage it efficiently.
People die in wars, that's nothing new. That's not evil from the devil's point of view, he just followed the rules already in place, the rules that stated the light must battle the dark or whatever.
Frikgeek This is info from the light novel vol 1. 1741 - 1799(~) Satan wages war with the Demon Realm, 1870 Satan becomes Demon Lord, 200X (3-4 years ago) Satan begins Conquest of Human Realm, 201X (2 years ago) Emilia taken by church, Emilia's town is razed + Father dies (Lucifer Responsible?), Emilia begins training, 201X (6 months ago) Satan is defeated, escapes to earth, 201X (1-2 months ago) Satan joins MgRonalds. That's almost 140 years of peace with Satan as Demon lord before the cr@p hit the fan.
There's several more revelations but there's a backstory part that is very responsible for the events happening the way they do. Basically, demons NEED human fear to survive and a faction was already planning a full massacre of the world. Basically, the implied reason why the Demon Lord orders the invasion was to ensure the survival of his subjects and because the radical faction of demonkind was ready to murder humanity,not just invade them.
Also, according to more recent novels there's more than one "Satan", Sadao is just the last (so we don't know when exactly the current one came into power).

Since the demon realm became peaceful when maou become king there were low fear and despair which is there source of their long lives. Without it the demons would die. So maou planned to "conquer" the human world for the fear to sustain themselves.

Well, there is always the light novels. There's currently ten out in English, and the anime only covered the first two. Though of course that is a novel and not a manga or anime. There is he occasional picture, but that's all. Everything else is up to the imagination.

It was so weird how in the show, they kept on hinting at some sort of corruption in the Church, and then with the flip-flop-ness of the Devil's personality, it would make it out to be that the Church is the real evil one. But it never seemed to go anywhere? Even though they mention it like every 2 episodes?
The church is evil. So was the Devil. The difference is that the Devil admits his mistakes as time goes on and makes an effort to change. The Church on the other hand would rather not face their mistakes. They weren't trying to say who was evil or good. They were trying to show how neither side was truly right.

It wouldn't surprise be if Satan started his conquest because of something the Church did, and they used it as propaganda to wipe out the demons while hiding their own sins.

I think him choosing to play by Earth's rules stems from how he gets his magic, which is finite by the way. He gets it through really strong negative emotions. Since there wasn't much of that he basically went, "may as well make the most of it"

I think a good explanation to why the Devil flips from pure evil to decent human being.
Quick explanation of the good character, she has a problem because for all her life she was told she is the one who will kill the dark lord so she is lost when there is no dark lord, cause he turned good. Similarly the devil has been told his whole life that he has to conquer the world and told he has to do it using the rules of the world (in fantasy world, military might, in ours economic), so the fact that he turns into such a goody too shoes makes sense because he was always told that he had to conquer the world while following the rules.

I really really liked this show and I hope maybe it will get a season 2 some day, but there was one thing is this show that contantly annoyed me, the Hero. Look I understand she doesn't trust the devil, but it becomes really annoying when everytime she sees him, until the near end, she constantly thinks he's going to cause trouble. Heck even after he defends the humans she still thinks he's going to destroy everything. I just wish she had calmed down once in a while.
But you have to understand that to her, the devil is literally the devil (no pun intended).
He is the one who commanded his armies to kill countless, and also responsible for the death of the Hero's father and her traumatic upbringing in the church. So that's probably why she does not trust him.
Gaston Sandstig I've heard that so many times but here's the flaw there. If he really was all that evil wouldn't he just let the other demons do as they want when they arrive? It would of conserved his power that he had been saving up since he arrived but instead he takes it upon himself and in fact sacrifices that power that he needed to return home to defeat the other demons. That's the exact opposite of evil in my eyes and she witnesses this first hand.

It's been a while since I watched the show, though, so I don't remember all that well. Maybe it was in the manga. Overall, "Devil is a Part Timer" was a funny parody of the usual fantasy genre.

Some things here:
1. As far as I know, the source material is a LN, not a manga, so it's a "Read the LN" ending :P
2. As far as I know, in the LN it actually is the case that Mao isn't actually bad. It's just that the environment forced him to it.
Born as basically the most powerfull devil of all, he was taught that he has to defeat/kill the humans and become the overlord.
So he was simply forced into the role (kinda similiar to how Emi was "forced" into the role of the hero as she was a half-angel (her mother was an angel) and could use ther "heavenly silver" which allowed her to go toe to toe with the devil overlord.
This might just me confusing fanfiction with what is actually in the LN, so take those two things with a grain of salt ^^

Now, I know that Emi and Maou is the number one ship by the fans, but it is a weird ship to me and is the only ship I actually question. And to even bring in a character just to push these two together is so forced that it makes me cringe. I honestly want Maou and Chiho together, but I'm totally fine if they won't. But to push Emi no Maou together like that is beyond bad and the most awful excuse to get two enemies together to, in the end, fall in love with each other.
Not only that, but to include a "he was actually alive all along" moment for Emi really makes me facepalm. It's sad to see one if my favorite anime take such a fan fictional turn and people treating it like canon.
Maou wasn't born the most powerful demon of all. He was a good person because he was raised by an angel. He wasn't forced or anything but what he did was necessary. It's all explained in later volumes.

actually satan was one of the most weak devil, like you saw in the anime the demons "eat" bad emotions, in the demon world there was a lot of wars between the demons but satan conquered all the demons world and stopped all wars that were happening there, so there was no more bad emotions to eat. there is no food in the demons world, so he decided to invade the human world in order to create more bad emotions so his race could survive but all went out of control. when he arrives to the earth and realizes than demons can survive with human food and without demonic powers he decide to change ecause he has never wanted to do bad things

Because I did and I really like Kill la Kill kind of fun, so what I am asking, if I liked kill la kill (as a comedy) am I going to like this show?
Lega I actually dislike Kill la Kill and found it quite boring and repetitive. The only parts that I even found remotely funny were the Mako Moments. Mako was the only reason I even watched that show to completion, i don't know if that helps, but I'd say The Devil is a Part Time is definitely worth a shot. If you don't like by about maybe the half way point which is about 6 episodes in, then you can drop it. Although you could probably drop it earlier, it's been almost a year since I've seen it so I don't know when it picks up.

So I literally just finished this anime and it was fairly good. Not gonna lie I laughed my ass off so many times, definitely where Urushigaraha (or however you spell the name I just butchered) said "YOLO" ugh I died.
My only thing was that I wanted to see a bit more action, like I felt the show had some real potential to be funny AND action-packed. And by that I mean more of Maou's evil side and a big more about Ente Isla. I also thought it was weird how his personality completely did a 180 and he was like no longer an EVIL badass but just a badasss with a job lol is that weird?

If I can share my own personal theory as to why Sadou isn't the MWAHAHA I'M SO EVIL devil is because he's playing the long con. He's drastically weakened in this world, because whatever laws of physics or what have you don't act the same in regards to magic. I would assume he's familiarized himself with our world's weaponry, as proven when he exclaims "Is some one shooting at us?" and when it the distinction between "regular and magic" bullets come into play.
I can only speculate how much of the character we see is Sadou with this theory in place. On the one hand it's not that hard to believe that the lord of all demons didn't get much interactions with humans and what he knew came through reports or other not so accurate means. The other is that he doesn't view other humans in our world as humans at all. This conclusion coming from the fact that he and Ashia turned into humans after passing through the portal either gave him a new perspective or he believes that the humans may be stranded daemons interbred with humans or something similar.
And it could very well be Ashia is in on it, the way he acts most of the time is in the role of the "responsible and sensible adult" but he doesn't go into a fight without his cape? It could be he's on orders to keep his distance and wait in the wings if something goes sideways.
I like to think that Mao's a genuinely nice guy but he also has his nefarious side. When the tunnel collapsed and he got his demonic form back, I'm certain he could feel little miss hero charging up for an attack, given how easy it was for her to feel out his power. but instead of moving to defend he does what he know will keep the hero's attention, help others. He knows she knows people are injured and he also knows that as long as he's saving lives Amelia is not going to stop him. It could be construed he talked his way out of a fight by letting his actions speak for him.
That's why I think he's such a great "potential" villain. Its not the tyrant devil who keeps the world in chains and is just begging for some do gooder to kick his ass. He's the silver tongued devil that you like, instead of fighting the hero he uses her. He has a code of conduct and he protects his underlings.
Think about that on a larger scale, for example (minor spoilers) When Mao charges out of the MgRonalds to save Chi, his coworker, and everyone else during the season climax, what happens afterward? Word gets back to the MgRonalds that one of their workers was in trouble and he went to save her (minus all the fantasy stuff).
Consider the following, do you think the other employees are going to question Mao after that? on whether or not he's a good guy? anyone working under him is going to give their utmost loyalty to him because of that act.
Mao is corporate evil, Lawful Evil if you will. He's not outwardly manipulative and people enjoy his company. This is the guy who will sit on a throne, not because he battled his way there, but because those who follow him put him there willingly.
A tyrant you willingly bow down to because you like him is a thousand times more dangerous than one you bow to in fear. And I suspect that's what Mao is, though not much in the anime directly supports this assumption, I have yet to find something that would contradict it.
Just rewatching the reviews for kicks but you bring up the fact that the devil is willing to follow the rules of our world to a T. As someone who also plays table top RPGs (pathfinder specifically) this falls right into line. Devils are always lawful, evil yes, but always lawful evil. Its the demons who don't care about rules or structure

The answer to all your gripes and complaints lies in the LNs. It explains Sadao's motivation behind world domination and develops Emi's character a LOT. They've actually become my strongest ship in any anime now that I've read the novels.
Well The Devil is a Part Timer is getting a second season so the ending on this season is alright to me. I found out that The Devil is a Part Timer is getting a second season because I was able to find a official trailer for this anime for season 2 but I can't remember where it is because I just ended up finding it when I tried to search for season 2 before I found out that it did not have one yet. So if you want to watch the second season when it is out you need to find it in it's Japanese name which is called Hataraku Maou-sama!

Edit: Did some researching. I can say for a fact, there is *no official/confirmed* information for a season 2. However, there was indeed a Japanese website that had information on it with a video, but the the site was soon taken down. Either it was *fake* or *leaked*, take your pick.
It isn't unlikely for a season 2 due to the fact that there is plenty of source material to work with now since season 1 and the Blu-ray sales weren't awful as well as the LN being well received in Japan. But my main point is, no *official* confirmation for a season 2 :/

The reason I think it is official that it showed legit anime seance that where not from this season of The Devil is a Part Timer and when I checked it Japanese name of the anime it's episode list had no special episodes so as there was no other parts of this season of The Devil is a Part Timer that could of proved that the trailer was fake so I myself this that trailer was official.

Emi is totally in love with Mao but Mao doesnt realize it. The more she hates him, the more she fall in love. I really love Emi. If it were for real, I would really like to marry her 😋 shes my type of woman 😁
Only if you assume she's Tsundere, and there's not much evidence of that. Additionally, Chiho is pretty jealous and even competes with Suzuno for no other reason than that Suzuno is hiding her intentions - Yet she isn't the least bit threatened by Emi once she knows what's going on.
Thing is, sorry folks, but this actually _isn't_ a harem-show...
Not to be harsh, but it seems a lot of people don't really get this show. I even had a person once try to tell me that Mao and Ashiya were "obviously" a gay couple...

I have to hand it to you, Mr Arkada, you know how to endorse a show. I wouldn't have considered it before, but I'm glad I gave it a try. It reminds me of my days in retail (I still wake up screaming)
But in all seriousness, thank you. I'm taking my time in between jobs a little harder than I like to admit, and seeing a fish-out-of-water comedy really helps.
A couple of notes as a lover of this show: first the back of the first volume of the manga says "It's tough being evil when you have to pay the rent" in huge letters. Second there is an ongoing plot that things are building towards but they push you into it so slowly and the story paces itself in a way where you hardly ever have to give up the slice of life feel and humor... in fact... they went through two volumes worth of content and didn't even get to the plot...

It's still a show you had to go to the source material to see the rest of the story (even if it's a light novel)

Seems like a show I could have liked...if so much of episode 2 wasn't people acting like Satan and Emilia were a thing, sandwiched between reasons why they shouldn't be a thing. Look, I liked Toradora as much as the next guy, but nobody thought they'd work well together until _after_ they started getting along, you know?

This was quite honestly one of my favorite series from 2013. Just describing the concept of the Devil working at McDonalds is funny to hear about, but to actually witnessing it unfold in such a normal manner is comedy gold. If you're looking for a comedy series, you have to check this one out.
I like the new look for the ratings/suggestions screen, Ark, but by the time you've put the recommended animes and places to stream things from, the whole thing looks rather crowded. Maybe make some elements smaller to add some spacing around them all? Just a suggestion. :)
Also, I've heard of this anime before, but haven't really thought much of it before now. I may give it a look!

I just got done watching this show and I had this feeling that it was missing something, but I couldn't really pin down what. After watching this review I realized it was probably because the show could have been so much more. If it had gone the route of "the devil wasn't really that bad" I probably would have liked it more.
Nice review, though I was surprised to see that you missed that Hataraku was a Light Novel originally. Not to say that this should change the perception of the plot, you can only judge it by what they adapted of course, but I think it should be kept in mind that some aspects of this show were setting up for future seasons if they had had the popularity to continue it.

This show had potential. The light heartedness like killed the show for me. It was just too much. The fact that lucifer was kept around was a big wtf. Him and Amelia had like no beef after the city attack. The ending didn't really wrap anything up. It's like the 12 episodes preceding it meant nothing. All in all, this was is a funny show but don't take it too serious despite the serious undertones.
OmegaMagnusDA lucifer was the devils subordinate, they said this in the show so thats why he didnt kill him or anything. He gave him his beating and taught him a lesson

Hmmm, it's so odd seeing this show get so much praise. It's so incredibly mediocre to me and rarely ever funny while featuring dull characters and a completely wasted premise. I never felt like the MC was actually The Devil, his personality change was too drasticly different from world to world. They all act like standard slice of life teenagers except with the twist that they're all supposed to be from a different reality, regardless how much they don't act like it. It's a lot like Ao No Exorcist for me, good first episode, the rest is bland.Not bad looking or poorly acted, just... not worth my time. Expected it to be great, left feeling like I hadn't watched anything at all, it left no impression other than negative things on me.

I watch the whole series your not missing anything. Its basically the same joke (the main character getting tortured) though out the show. And while there is character development it isn't worth it

"Yay for reading the manga"... Well, that is the purpose of 99% of anime over the past 20 years. Most stories are animated for sole purpose of promoting the manga/light novel. Have to take it for what it is.
Just a quick note in case anyone cared. In the manga, Emi does mention to Sadou about how he used to be. And he does briefly mention (after telling their daughter a story that is based off his own life... If I remember right) that the more power he got, he forgot who he was and his original motives, which was to create a land where the demons could live without fear. So coming to the human world with little to no power, was like a new beginning for him, one which he could do right this time
Hey Glass Reflection, could you check out and review the RomCom "Lovely Complex"? It's been out since 2007, and actually finished where the manga ended (if you don't include Lovely Complex Plus, which is more of a prequel+somewhat-epilogue sorta deal). Granted I've heard there were some changes/adjustments and dropped arcs between the original manga and the anime (particularly the manga's 2nd half), but I loved the anime! Kinda unique in that the characters apparently talk in Kansai-ben as opposed to the Tokyo dialect (i.e. using "aho"instead of "baka"); makes sense since the mangaka originated from Osaka.
YO! So I watched this anime after not having been watched anime in well over a year and I have to say this anime was pretty damn hilarious and well worth spending the 6-7 hours watching. This anime just brought me back into the loving embrace of what anime is. This guy said it all, but as a personal preference always watch the anime in the original Japanese with subs it's just better. I hope there is a season 2!!

I've actually only ever noticed two forms of product placement in anime. The first one i forget but i think it was in K. The second is in arpeggio of blue steel, a very very well placed PVC figure around the halfway mark of the series on a shelf in the back kind of either advertising or confirming soon to be released merchandise. It wasn't in your face at all and the reason i was actually able to notice it was because of my 50" samsung.
