Why I bought a Micro Four Thirds Lumix G7 in 2023

  • I love my Canon 5D MKii, look I know this is about a completely different camera, but bear with. My Canon 5D MKii has a 21MP Fullframe high end raw files format. This camera is an absolute beast and should give me better image quality than the Lumix G7 any day of the week. So why did I buy the Lumix G7 then?
Now I own a MFT there's a huge range well designed lenses at a good price. The MFT body is incredibly lightweight making it so much easier when I go on Hikes and other adventures. Having an articulating LCD screen makes photography twice as fun being able to work angles you can't normally get.

Micro four thirds is not to be underestimated. It can even be superior in a few situations and genres.
I have the G9 and G85 with a couple Olympus pro lenses, which I have used in commercial architecture work.
Seriously, 90% of photographers don't need any more than a G7 or G85 can do.

I have G5 and G80 (which is G85 for EU market). There are some major differences, but not in the image quality (with exception of IBIS). Weather sealing, in-body IS. And then build quality. G5 next to the G80 feels like a toy, on the other hand G80 is heavier and somewhat bigger. And last difference is that G5 touch screen is somewhat weird and it needs applying certain pressure, whereas G80 screen feels like a phone and view finder on G5 has worse colors. Then there are minor things, like tripod plate blocking battery and card door on G5. Also I'm not sure if G5 has wifi which is handy as a remote shutter, video is worse, image bufer is smaller, i'm not sure if it has a timelapse.

M43 at 16mp or later 20mp is more than adequate for professional work. Two page spreads on high end periodicals easily obtainable with that amount of resolution.

Maybe manual focus is your friend though, through no fault of your own, the telltale sign you're using the G7 is the periodic focus hunting. I'm sure you've noticed it but not a deal breaker. Great content so far, look forward to seeing the next one.

This is the camera I've used on my channel for years now. I've attempted to "upgrade" to a few other cameras a few times and always ended up sending them back (either the video quality wasn't good enough, or such a miniscule improvement that I couldn't justify the cost.)
When I do my talking head shots, I set the camera in manual focus, and tap to focus on my phone with the Panasonic app. It eliminates the focus jumping, but for photos, I've never had a single problem with autofocus.

The G7 is my grab and go camera along with the 14-140 lens. While a great camera and among my favourites for handling and ease of use, it does have certain limitations that can, usually, easily be worked around. Firstly you have continuous autofocus engaged for your filming and it tends to hunt a bit. Use manual focus for that kind of work.
Then there is shutter shock which manifests with certain lenses at certain shutter speeds. I use auto shutter selection to avoid this and it is very effective. There is no minimum shutter speed available for use in Aperture priority mode with auto ISO. This often results in too low a shutter speed for the scene at hand.
Otherwise it’s a lovely camera even today. I had it out all day today on a farm tractor, just in case I saw something interesting. Not lucky today though and no time to play around.

People do use the G7 for professional work. Particularly good for product shot and street. The Canon 5D MkII is quite a bit noisier than the G7, which may surprise you. The reason for this is a small sensor generates less heat that causes noise, and the Lumix sensor is mounted on a heat sink.
The FF will have a wider angle of view for the same magnification, which gives a different look that cannot be replicated with a 4/3 and can be preferred for landscape. But FF lenses are a lot bigger and heavier.

I went for a M43 camera as well. With the sensor being half the size of a 24x36mm sensor, a truly equivalent lens weighs in at around 1/8th of its miniature format (nowadays called 'full frame'). I went for a different camera but the features on these things are astounding. I don't know if yours has a 'post-focus' function on it (image stacking to get greater depth of field) but that is pretty good. Also, the ability to process RAW images in any number of ways to produce whatever jpegs you want and the wireless comms with your smartphone to an app so that you can not only d/l the images but also, you can take pictures or video like this so you can place your camera somewhere and retire to a safe distance and see what it is seeing and take the shots you want. The only real reason to go above around the 16-24MP range is if you are going to be doing deep crops. One thing that these cameras are especially good at is the fact that they can do a software upgrade. My camera is on firmware version 2.0. I am eagerly awaiting the inclusion of converging verticals 'correction' that would use the camera's levelling sensors to produce a starting point. Like you say, M43 isn't quite 'compact' but it certainly doesn't weigh as much as a miniature format camera. Mine is a D-Lux 7, by the way.

Absolutley, Paul. The range of lenses you can choose from via the MFT's is great too. I was blown away and it is my first mirrorless too so the autofocus system feels soooo fast. I'm looking forward to having more of a play with it because there is so much going on within it. but at the moment it is definitely a 10/10 buy.

I originally thought it was half the size too but in total area the full frame is actually 3.9 times larger. Just another example of how good the system is!

If you're going to use autofocus make sure it's in 50/60p mode as there are more frames and it's easier for the camera to lock on to you. Also you didn't need autofocus in this specific situation. You could have used your phone as a monitor and the panasonic imaging app to lock on to focus. All in all the G7 is a great camera I own one since 2017. I prefer the GX85 though (which I also own), only caveat being no flippy screen but makes up for it with IBIS.

A trick with the movie AF for talking head is to switch recognition off, use a central focus area, put AFC and Continuous Focus on, along with Quick AF, and aim the camera at the subject. Now if its view is interrupted it will refocus on the product quickly, and then back to the subject when removed. This only works if the subject is stationary not running about, it is easily distracted, which is the point.

From a video perspective the 1080p is ugly, the 4K is excellent tho, and not being able to use a monitor is an absolute struggle. Definitely things to consider

cameras with full frame sensors are superior in low light conditions.
But for me, the problem of low light can still be solved with lights when using an MFT camera, even a full frame sensor camera still needs light to build depth and composition.
That's why I also bought the GH5 in 2022. Low price, high end features. I only feel the constraints if I want to shoot in a landscape frame, I need a lens with a focal length range of 7-12mm which is expensive.
But i still didn't regret have an MFT camera.

If you get a $35 remote and set your focus to single, you will be in focus and you will not get that focus hunting.

I was also considering this camera but went with the G85 for it's waterproofness and a bevy of additional features and not that much bigger.
