Saw them at DTE an outdoor facility just North of Detroit around 2005 ? I was already a fan but this was my first time seeing them live I was amazed how hard they "rocked it" live. I always loved the band but I was amazed how hard they "rocked it" live. I'm 67 years old now, and I lived as a child in Toronto, but moved to Detroit in 67 in the midst of the riots. Big change for a 10 year old. Anywhoo... I'm 67 years old, its 1:00am, I'm smoking Super Lemon Haze, listening to The Hip with a smile on my face...life is good.
Seeing them LIVE was always a very special experience. I listen to The HIP everyday. And everyday I discover something new within these brilliant recordings. The HIP is the worlds best Rock N' Roll gift shop.
Love that he calls out Michael Ondaatje between Last American Exit & Boots Or Hearts "This is Michael Ondaatje green"! He's the Ceylon/Canadian author of The English Patient, and was also an English professor at York University in Toronto!
What an absolutely fabulous recording ! The clarity of each instrument coming through is just amazing. I’m listening w earbuds…w a beer in hand. Sunny summer day w The Hip playing in my ear. What can be better than that?
😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮!!!!!!!!!! The Hip played The CFNY Christmas party in November of 89 at The Spectrum on Dawes and Danforth in Toronto which was up the street from where I grew up. It’s the first place I had an underaged drink in around 95/96. Soundgarden also played The Spectrum in 92. I always found it quite cool when I discovered later in life that these bands I now love played there. The Spectrum was a real tough, grimey, dirty east end bar/venue with a UFO space feel. They don’t make em like that anymore….. The Hip’s “Up to Here” Album was released in September of 89 which if you look at their history is the album where they blew up nationally and we’re brought to the masses (very poignantly shown in The No Dress Rehearsal Documentary). It went double platinum within months of its release in Canada which was no small feat. I don’t want to say they were at their peak in November of 89 but man were they were on their way in ascending to Canadian Royalty. The quality of this Hip recording is excellent and captures what must have been a very exciting time in the lives of the band not to mention it totally rocks!!! They could/should officially release this. I played it on a drive to Montreal from Toronto for work the other day driving through Kingston. Sooooooooo Good I can cry!!!!!
I saw them live at the Concordia University cafeteria in Montreal around the same time in 89. About 200 people in attendance. Amazing! Thanks for posting this. Brings back a great memory.
Some of their older songs. Awesome. Some of The Hip’s younger siblings were a few years ahead of me and my friends in high school, when this came out. One of their Dad’s was the boy’s gym teacher. Fun to see the talent, tours and fame unfold.

This is the best recording of them pre- 1990 by far.

I think this is the only live performance of When the Weight Comes Down on RUclips
I wish they would have done "Another Midnight". I don't recall them ever doing that one live despite it being a great song/.
This is incredible
My dad & I had just moved to Buffalo in October ‘89. I found CFNY and got hooked on The Hip immediately.
This is fantastic- thanks for sharing!

Great to hear some of those old songs from the first EP played live with professional quality sound.
Good God!
They sound awesome and like they are having a lot of fun!!! Wish I could seen them live back then
I wish I could like this a thousand times. 🤘🇨🇦
A great recording...tight.
Yeah, this sounds better than most of their commercial releases. :)
I was just over a year old when this concert happened. Sounds like a show that could have been recorded this year. The Hip is timeless.
