    • @JustTheGems

      @@JamieR In the sense that there's farming and crafting, yeah. But it's much, much more of an RPG/Action-RPG than Stardew is. I'd say the combat and other RPG elements are like 75-80% of the game, and the farming, etc. is around 20.

    29:11 I got Saturday Morning RPG for my 35th birthday this year, and I find it very nostalgic because I grew up with a surprising amount of 80s cartoons in the 90s either due to reruns or renting VHS tapes of ones no longer on the air. There are a dozen or so 80s cartoons that I still find very enjoyable so it feels like this game was made for me. I agree with it being a B tier game, personally I would put it in the A tier if it weren't for the annoying fact that you can only get into so many battles every chapter. One of the reasons RPGs are my favorite video game genre is because of how you can make the battles easier by level grinding. I would even look at guides with recommended levels then make sure that my party was beyond those levels before going through that part so not being able to level grind feels wrong for an RPG. The second or third boss in the first chapter took me 3 tries to beat, and the bosses in chapter 2 kicked my butt on the first try because one of them keeps healing both. Fortunately watching a playthrough of that fight taught me a way to possibly beat them.

    Agreed with the love for Harvestella. That game is so criminally underrated. It's honestly sad how many people immediately dismissed it because it didn't match their idea of a farm sim or doesn't look like a high budget JRPG. The name honestly didn't help it all with marketing. It makes sense in a story context after playing it, but for attracting new players, it gives false expectations unfortunately.

I loved Sea of Stars too, but if I am being honest, the character development in OTII was definitely superior, and OTII's battle system had more depth, so overall both games are in a pretty close tie for me. I must admit I've often not felt as enthused about some of the big titles as so many others do.
    I've been away from the Switch for a while but am planning to play some rpg's in the coming months.
    My list is getting quite big!!
    Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 7,9 and 10, Grandia and Suikoden (not sure when it releases) are all calling me!!
    I had the Longest 5 minuets on Vita but never got to it, so I'll try and pick it up.

      So wait… you’ve never played the ps1 games you mentioned??? I’m so jealous of you. I think that final fantasy 9 and 10 are nearly perfect and with the ability to fast forward battles in 9 that clears the only minor complaint I could think of. I think anyone can enjoy those games. Final fantasy 7 is my favorite game of all time so I don’t think my bias can properly allow me to objectively recommend it but subjectively I think it still holds up. Though I can see why the graphics might put someone off. Chrono Cross, Grandia , and Suikoden 2 are also among my favorites.
      Suikoden 2 is another very easy recommendation. It’s probably the best game on that list honestly lol. If I’m being objective.
      As far as Grandia 1-2. There are a few games that have made me think “I think this is my favorite video game ever” and FF7, FF9, Grandia 1-2, Persona 4, have all made me say that at one point in my life. So I really need to replay the Grandia games soon but I’m sure they still hold up.
      But you really need time add star ocean second story R to your list.
      I will also recommend FF8. While the story didn’t capture me as much as 10 or 7, and mechanically it’s not as perfect 9, I think it is still one of the best RPGs ever made. It’s just living right underneath the shadow of some truly transcendent games. Don’t get me wrong it comes very close imo. I think it probably has my favorite soundtrack in a video game. Don’t let the lack of hype deter you from it. Its remaster is also probably one of the better handled from square.
      And I’ll recommend FF12 as well. Again, probably a step down for many but it’s still better than a lot of other stuff out there. Like it wouldn’t even surprise me if you enjoy FF12 the most or FF8 the most. Like my best friend favorite is 12 and my brothers is 8.
      Now if we could just get square to port Vagrant Story and xenogears to the switch…Your education would be complete.

    I'm always happy to watch all your videos but these kinds on particular. For starters your opinions differ from mine which is always refreshing to hear a different perspective than my own. And secondly because you do a great job of explaining your point of view as to what you think of a game
    I agree with Octopath 1 being super grindy and me not finishing the last secret boss because I didn't get like grinding for hours.
    I also agree with secret of mana. I was born in 82 and played it when it first came out but it's really hard to play now. For the collection to play with my daughter and man is it rough. The hit detection and the grinding for magic levels are just not fun. However, trials of mana is amazing and worth getting the collection for. I am a huge Xenoblade fan. Xenoblade 1 on the Wii is the game that really ignited my love for JRPGs anew and Xenoblade 3 was such a perfect send off to this arc BUT i can see why this series isn't for everyone especially the gameplay. And even though Xenoblade 3 is objectively better than 1 with a much more fleshed out cast and better written story Xenoblade 1 will forever stay my favorite i think because it had such a huge impact on my hobby.
    And Harvestella is such a hidden gem. After playing A LOT of farming games it is a much better Jrpg than farming game and i am a little pissed that they pushed the farming aspect so hard in all the merketing.

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  9 месяцев назад

      Agreed on XB, I understand totally why the first is so many people's favorite (this applies to some of my friends who like it, too). The gameplay has never been my FAVORITE overall, but by the third game I felt more or less comfortable with it.
      And you're 100% right on the marketing, I think they were expecting there to be a bigger farming sim community out there champing at the bit for a game like Harvestella, when in reality they would have been so much better served just selling it to RPG fans in general

    1:32 ("Crystar")
    Oh that's interesting. Most people I've seen talk about "Crystar" generally didn't like it. Either due to the gameplay, which is fair enough, to even the writing, seen it called amateur tier or worse. Think the only channel I've ever seen not absolutely hate it was JRPG Jungle. So I'm kind of surprised to see another channel actually share some positive sentiments about it.
    For the most part, I'm on the side that really likes the game. Something about it just connected with me. Like, I could write a whole essay about how it interconnects its themes with its mechanics and even subverts them at times to deliver messages. Not to mention the OST which is just fantastic, been primarily listening to it this past week in fact. Heck, I'm even playing through its sequel, "Crymachina", as I'm listening to this video.
    Apparently the game was inspired by "Drakengard" and, yeah, I can definitely see some stark similarities if that's true. Like how each weapon has it's own message or story that updates as they get upgraded to even how the ending(s) are executed.
    13:02 ("Tales of Vesperia: DE")
    This game is kind of a sour point for me. I really like the "Tales of" franchise and, as someone who has never had an XBox, I never had a chance to play it. I'd been hearing for over a literal decade about how great of an entry it is. One of the best even. Once I finally got my hands on it through the "Definite Edition", I came out of it oddly disappointed. A consequence of overhype I suppose.
    I made sure to basically fully complete the game when I played it. Finished the post game area, finished the alternative final boss fight, did all the bonus objectives during boss fights, fully filled out both the item and monster compendiums, got every title for every character, etc. I just didn't really find myself enjoying it that much compared to some of the other entries for a number of reasons unfortunately. And I hate that I feel this way since it just reinforces how I often end up as a contrarian. Oh well.

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  10 месяцев назад

      Honestly, I can see why some people dislike Crystar, but it just ticks every important box for me.
      And I know what you mean with Vesperia. Overhype has killed a lot of things for me in the past. (I was fortunate that Vesperia originally came out when I was sort of "on pause" with gaming, so I didn't experience the hype at all.)
