I just did the same repair with some cheap snap ring pliers from Walmart and it looks like you almost had an easier time! I ended up using none of the spacers when I put it back together (tapping everything in well before the snap rings) and it seems like I'm getting good engagement and no scraping when it disengages (not sure why the original one had 2 spacers in it but maybe the new kit I bought off ebay has different tolerances). The fix seems to have fixed my very noisy when engaged AC compressor, and hopefully fixes my half hot/half cool AC when it gets warmer (I keep checking refrigerant and it is in the recommended range but my AC was struggling to blow cold air last summer).
Hey bud any updates on if this is still running strong? I'm about to do mine and everyone keeps telling me if the clutch goes out the compressor isn't far behind.
How is it holding up? I've been following along and fixing my own compressor. If you need spacers to reassemble the clutch I'm guessing your bearings weren't actually seated all the way and the snap ring wasn't locked in all the way around. I had to check and beat on the pulley a few times to get the bearings to clear the slot for the snap ring. The center was sticking out slightly past the pulley. No issues with clearance on reassembly after that.
hi from the philippines, have the same issues my 2010 forester xt ac compressor making noise like screeching electricty, does this solve the problem? already order btw
Is this a STI or regular wrx? My a/c was also making a sound and now its gotten to the point where my a/c doesn’t even cool when on most the time and im fairly certain is just the clutch, not the whole compressor, that needs replacing. When I turn on my ac the clutch doesn’t even spin which is why it doesn’t cool obviously. Im having a hard time finding a clutch wrx, most im finding are for the sti.
This is just a WRX, it's not an STI. If you're low on R134 I don't think the clutch will engage. You may need to check for leaks in your system. But if it was making a noise before it may be just the clutch on it needing to be replaced.
This is what I purchased since you said you were having trouble finding one. www.ebay.com/itm/A-C-Compressor-Clutch-Repair-Kit-For-2008-2015-Subaru-WRX-Forester-Impreza-2-0L/222948917505?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3Ddf4047d365c54ce7a9e752d2fcc5ea8e%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D222948917505%26itm%3D222948917505&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A5517c01e-6ab7-11e9-a128-74dbd180f654%7Cparentrq%3A6aa16c1016a0ab6b9af944faffef9f9f%7Ciid%3A1
Hey guys, They do make a fairly inexpensive clutch removal kit and if you got some snap ring pliers next time would be little easier just some helpful hints from an old mechanic,
zeppelin 911 Our A/c was still functioning but it’s possible, I’m not 100% sure in your case tho. Maybe your clutch is not engaging which would mean your ac would not work.
@@ChelszH my AC doesn't work at all. I hear the buzzing noise of the clutch to. Took it yesterday to the mechanic and told me that the AC compressor is good. So now I'm wondering is it the clutch that causes the AC not to run??
How'd you tension the belt once you got the pulley replaced? I'm fixing my '11 WRX and it doesn't have the same independent tensioner as my bugeye. 🙈 Is it tensioned based off the alternator? 🙏😅
11's Wrx doesn't have a tensioner, is a stretch belt type and goes in very tight, the tool helps a lot, but definitely can be installed with a couple of screwdrivers and rotating the crank pulley to spin everything and make the belt start catching the ridges of the ac pulley, good luck!
I love this. This is how real people and not mechanics fix stuff. Finding the surprise bag of goodies at the end made me laugh out loud. I have the same issue on my 2015 Forester. I see a tool online for $20 that helps you pull the compressor. Not sure if I have the balls to try this but you gave me some hope.
You call it a snap ring in USA but in UK it's called a circlip and you could do with a pair of circlip pliers definitely if you continue working on cars.
I bought my kit on eBay. www.ebay.com/itm/A-C-Compressor-Clutch-Repair-Kit-For-2008-2015-Subaru-WRX-Forester-Impreza-2-0L/222948917505?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3Ddf4047d365c54ce7a9e752d2fcc5ea8e%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D222948917505%26itm%3D222948917505&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A5517c01e-6ab7-11e9-a128-74dbd180f654%7Cparentrq%3A6aa16c1016a0ab6b9af944faffef9f9f%7Ciid%3A1
Hey guys, where did you get your parts from? I have to replace mine. But I don't know where to get the parts that will fit my subaru without the fear that they will not fit.

I know...Not the greatest source for parts but I bought from these guys and everything worked and lined up perfectly! www.ebay.com/itm/A-C-Compressor-Clutch-Repair-Kit-For-2008-2015-Subaru-WRX-Forester-Impreza-2-0L/222948917505?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3Ddf4047d365c54ce7a9e752d2fcc5ea8e%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D222948917505%26itm%3D222948917505&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A5517c01e-6ab7-11e9-a128-74dbd180f654%7Cparentrq%3A6aa16c1016a0ab6b9af944faffef9f9f%7Ciid%3A1
Officially subbed! By the way what year is your EJ255 wrx? Will this fit on 2013 wrx hatch? Cause i wanna make sure i get the right AC compressor pulley and clutch.I will follow your video as a guide, Thanks!
I have this same noise/issue. Going to replace the clutch, see what happens. Hey - did the bearing being bad affect your A/C at all or was it just the noise by itself?
Snap ring pliers are around $10 from harbor freight and and auto zone will let you use a ac pulley remover for free!!! Slow down and do the work right. I mean it works but come on….
I watched this in horror. When you do the job make sure you have snapring pliers, a magnet, a pulley puller, and feeler gauges. Keep the magnet near the snaprings when installing to avoid them flying away.
Thanks for the video because according to the factory service manual it look like this part is not replaceable. Now how did you know the noise was not from compressor?
This video is something else... a comedy of errors... looks like you guys need to watch a video... I learned more from the many mistakes, than any info I would duplicate... I am impressed that a man and a woman could work on a car together...
This was hilarious and also all the information I needed to do the job with confidence (and saved me like $750) Thanks!

Where did you buy the pulley and clutch assembly? My 17 sti is making noise.
Thanks for the good Walk-through. I would recommend to have feeler gauges to measure clearance and proper snap ring pliers.
For sure, was just working with what we had. lol
Thank you for doing it exactly as many of us would (missing the bag of rings/spacers etc)!
@3:39 you can see the shit bearings tht was causing the grinding noise mine had similar issue
Hey bud any updates on if this is still running strong? I'm about to do mine and everyone keeps telling me if the clutch goes out the compressor isn't far behind.
Worked on my forester! Thank you!
Hi! Where did you guys the pulley from? Can you share the link?
I am wondering the same thing, if you found it do you mind sharing the link to me as well 😂

Awesome video this jus helped me but you didn't give us part number lol for the clutch and pully im looking all over net for it
Where did you get the replacement kit?
My ac compressor clutch kit just got broken, and the cable is off. Is my car still drivable?
Yes, just means you have no air con, but you can still drive the car.
Does this work on all EJ255 WRX engines?
How in the world do you get the belt off?
It’s a stretch belt so you need a specific tool to remove and install it.
I have 2008 I'm ordering this thing u help me a lot 7 years no AC I'm goin to try
Where did you get this kit? I can’t find it online. I have the 2011 subaru impreza wrx sedan. Thank you in advance!
Where did you find a replacement clutch.
hi from the philippines, have the same issues my 2010 forester xt ac compressor making noise like screeching electricty, does this solve the problem? already order btw

Thanks for the tip. We were just using the tools we had. We now have Snap ring pliers at hand though.lol
Chelsz H 👍👍😊
Did it reduce your gas milage?
during the noisy thing, does it still blowing a cool air from the vent?
If I remember correctly the AC was still working fine the clutch was just starting to go out and start squealing.
Does replacing the clutch also fixes my AC problem of just the noise?
zeppelin 911 Our A/c was still functioning but it’s possible, I’m not 100% sure in your case tho. Maybe your clutch is not engaging which would mean your ac would not work.
@@ChelszH my AC doesn't work at all. I hear the buzzing noise of the clutch to. Took it yesterday to the mechanic and told me that the AC compressor is good. So now I'm wondering is it the clutch that causes the AC not to run??
zeppelin 911 yes, the ac clutch has to engage in order for the compressor to work. If it’s not then that’s probably your issue.
This will also help if your ac randomly blows hot air while driving on the highway.
How'd you tension the belt once you got the pulley replaced? I'm fixing my '11 WRX and it doesn't have the same independent tensioner as my bugeye. 🙈 Is it tensioned based off the alternator? 🙏😅

yes our forester had the same problem noisy when the magnetic clutch engage and not blowing cool air.
Tha numbers on the bolts mean the hardness. Low numbers means weaker steel made and high numbers mean though steel made.
You call it a snap ring in USA but in UK it's called a circlip and you could do with a pair of circlip pliers definitely if you continue working on cars.
Oh cool, yeah we had a pair at one time but they broke. We have since purchased another pair. Makes life a lot easier.
In the USA we call people like you a bitch
I needed to know how to take it off. Thanks for skipping that part
Great video,
12:04 you should have transferred the clip from the old connector to the new one.
Great info!!! Thank you for posting!!
Do you mind giving me the part number please.
I have an impreza 1.6 1998
Hi. Does replacing the clutch solved the problem (noise)?
It did in my application! The clutch was defiantly the cause of the noise and chatter.
😂 lmao when u guys found the rings and parts ! Ty for helpful video! 🎉
Nice work without having retaining ring opener 👍👌
Thanks 👍
Do you guys have the link for this pulley? Or where to buy it?
I bought my kit on eBay.

Numbers on th bolt means physical characteristics of the metal the bolt made of. Its needed to get proper momentum to torque it
Very helpful and relatable video 🤣

the number on the bolts is a torque reference for each bolt. they are torqued to diff pounds and can be found in the manual
