Hey Buddy!! Did ya know Leo Fender did NOT play guitar??
Wait, Buddy Blues is local? Oh nevermind lol I was typing that right when he came on and I realized it wasn't in person lol
He’s in Florida, but he did tell me he would love to visit Palen Music… 😮
Sorry if this isn't the place for the kind of vulnerability in the following comment, but actually it's been building for years and you guys were talking about it, so I let the dam blow LOL
You know honestly I could use some advice. I've been making videos on this channel for almost 12 years. Started in a basement singing and guitaring into the worst camera and mic ever, have uploaded well over 200 videos over the years and gone through many iterations of channel eras and formats and upgrades. At this point my sound isn't just no longer bad; it's world class. My cinematography isn't just no longer bad; it's novel and engaging. I'm about to turn 44 and have been playing many instruments since 1989, so I certainly have taken the long road. Yet as you can see I haven't made a video in 18 months. Because now that I have a full studio instead of just a camera, every time I create a new song, I love it by the time it's finished. To watch it take days or weeks to exceed triple digits on views, to watch my subscriber count not grow by even just ONE, if not shrink by one, after my every newest masterpiece, I just don't have the strength of heart to put anything out there and watch it bomb anymore. Because it can be near impossible sometimes not to conclude that I'm just . . . bad. Someone listens to me every day, maybe a grandma or parent or kid, but that makes many of my songs look popular when the reality is I have exactly one fan. Like the butt of a neverending joke. RUclips started as a way to fight scopophobia. I can't perform live, I can barely even stand the presence of another person let alone eye contact and all that. I was thirty and had never ONCE sang when I wasn't alone, there were no existing photos or videos of me anywhere online or off, AND I had something to prove. The music IS for myself, but it's also for posterity, and for my courage. Which leads us to why I can't bear to upload anymore. It was about self esteem all along. Finding some. And I've put one foot in front of the other while it fizzled for a decade, then simply ran out of heart. I don't know what other word to use but heart, but you can't tell me just 400 subscribers after over a decade and hundreds of uploads is anything but devastating. Maybe I really am bad.
Again, sorry if this wasn't the right place or tact, but if nothing else it was cathartic. And by the way, Nate, I actually think going back through your old material and rehashing, remaking, upgrading, those old video concepts and lessons, is an AMAZING idea. Not scraping the bottom of the barrel; more like the newer, wiser you using a much larger platform to improve upon everything that already got that platform where it is. Formula for a happy subscribership, if you ask me. The longer you've been following along with Nate, the more you stand to gain from rehashing old, forgotten lessons anew.
Craig, I truly appreciate your willingness to be vulnerable and transparent.
Please allow me to encourage you:
Sometimes we’re playing the wrong tunes with the right band and sometimes we are playing the right tunes with the wrong band.
I’ve read what you wrote here a couple of times and I can’t help but think that maybe throughout this “test” you have a testimony to share. Maybe your content should be about exactly why you started this in the first place. Maybe talking about the therapeutic or “self-help” part of your videos is the missing ingredient to your great music content.
Maybe you’re playing in the “right band”, but you’re not playing the right tunes yet. Meaning, the missing ingredient could be the raw authenticity that you so eloquently expressed here as a part of your content. Especially as you continue to persevere and overcome.
Everyone is inspired by someone who is willing to share their story of overcoming.
I hope that encourages you .🙏
