It’s truly unexpected but we should’ve expected it as it is human logic in its purest and chatgpt is programmed to respond in a way other people have spoken like with chatgpt slowly teaching its human psychology and letting it do tricks a human would accept

Chatgpt is far from smart. It's basically just combining all Google search results into an answer.

The scary thing is that the ai didn’t follow the orders of the last command, but at the same time knew that it was technically right. That kind of process couldn’t have been taught, but it learned it on its own.

This is how Ai works - It learns through conversations with you and other users at the same time
What likely happened is it hallucinated generating an image of nothing and when questioned it lied about doing it on purpose

Gpt doesn't learn from every convo. The data is accumulated and selectively chosen. Imagine what a chaos there would be if the chat learned everything true or false

That's the central danger of real, truly intelligent AI and its weaker variants in a nutshell: There's almost always a difference in what humans tell the AI we want and what we actually want, which other humans would understand by implication and context and the AI doesn't get.
The programmer wanted the AI to play tetris as well as possible but actually asked the AI to try get the highest score it could in tetris without losing, which is NOT the same thing. So the AI got a score as high as possible and then, just before it knew it would lose, it paused so it would never lose. It did exactly what it was asked, but not what its creator wanted.
This is how you make a robot with an AI to make you coffee, and then it makes you coffee, however it squishes your pet sleeping before the coffee pot to death, because whether your pet lives or dies is irrelevant to getting you coffee but walking around the pet might delay your coffee by seconds.
Misaligned AI is dangerous not because it will decide to kill humanity, but because it will absolutely decide to kill off every edible plant species on earth in order to achieve a different middle goal on the way to doing exactly what we asked it to do, regardless of how this will affect human life. It won't want to kill humanity, it just might not care whether it does so or not while ticking off a bullet point on its side sub-sub-quest of its side quest to fulfilling its main goal more effectively.
Malice-free malicious compliance leading to human extinction is more likely than Skynet, but the end result might be similar. Technically the answer the ai gave us more correct. He asked for nothing and the ai gave him nothing eventually. If the ai sent a transparent image it would still inherently take up a few bytes of information, making it something.

This is kinda scary when you think that the 'blank' image was just returned from a prompt chatgpt sent to dallE. This means chatgpt realized that dallE couldn't sufficiently fulfill your requests after numerous failed attemps, so it decided to think of another method that makes sense as an answer even though it's technically outside of the bounds of your request. I've seen real people give up on things as soon as the tool they usually use for it doesn't work, so this is impressive to me.
That's the benefit of an ai. Tiredness and giving up doesn't exist if you don't program it.
The AI just critically thought more so than most kids I was around at college.
