Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiff. This guy is a very independent, strong-willed and fiercely territorial dog. It comes from a history steeped in being the protector and sentry, guarding the campsites of Himalayan nomadic herdsmen. Devoted to their family, he’ll naturally rise to the role of protector.
With strangers he’s quite aloof, and must be allowed to get used to them from an early age to prevent him being too suspicious. Accepting strangers will make both of your lives a lot easier. They are very gentle and protective over family children, but must be watched when their friends visit. He can be aggressive if not socialised properly.
Indoors he’s calm and collected, outdoors he’s fairly active and will appreciate a good lengthy walk each day to keep the frustration at bay.
Grooming requirements are a bit more demanding. He can need brushing up to three times a week, and even daily when he’s moulting. You must be sure to concentrate on the longer hair around his britches and tail. He loves it when the weather is chilly, but hates the heat. He may bark a bit so be warned!
Interesting facts: As well as camp guards, his ancestors were also guards over villages and monasteries. The dogs would be chained to gates and rooftops to watch over the area by day and roamed the streets as a trusted presence by night.
