    *Notice: Please Read* ... 6 months ago, I flew this ELRS quad, the Crux35 SPI. I was blown away at the range (1+ mile) and penetration that could be achieved an SPI ELRS receiver, and I still fly that quad now as it's one of my favorites. I thought for sure that this would be the future of whoops and micros. But as the months have gone by, I have watched the constant firmware updates by the BF team to address ELRS issues. As much of a fan as I have been of SPI ELRS for getting us away from god-awful FrSky and FlySky SPI receivers, I was wondering how the issues with the updates were going to play out.
    Today one of the ELRS developers Bryan Mayland stated that "SPI hardware should not be considered" in his opinion. And that "ExpressLRS 2.x works fine, but when 3.0 RC starts in a couple weeks, SPI RX will not work at all due to changes in the over-the-air formatting... SPI hardware is already obsolete in the eyes of the development team as that information should be known before making your next whoop." That was sad for me to hear today but now it is understandable why.
    Just be aware of this before buying a Crux35 ELRS SPI today. It does have the uart fully broken out to solder an external receiver, so I think it's still a good buy. But SPI ELRS is basically dead. Going forward, it seems the plan is to have completely dedicated hardware over uart on the flight controllers, so that there is no mess of BF ELRS SPI implementation vs. new versions.

That's because I didn't realize The Tango 2 wasn't able to do more than 500hz and forgot to rebind before running this test. Still, it doesn't harm the result expressed here.

      Hey there, just getting to replying to comments, sorry for the late response. Thank you so much, I really appreciate knowing that my videos have been a great help. Nothing comes to mind that I can think of that you would need to know specifically about having a betafpv ELRS 2.4ghz nano tx module with respect to the crux35 ELRS. The only thing I would warn is that you should upgrade the crux35 to the latest version of betaflight 4.3.1 when you get it, and, to make things simple, make sure your betafpv module is just on the latest ELRS 2.x firmware. This quad can't bind to ELRS 3.0 without some extra technical steps at the moment.

    Incredible range! What does the hertz mean in FPV in relation to the power level?

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 года назад +2

      Hz is the data packet rate. Higher packet rates mean lower latency. 250hz is what immersionrc ghost runs on. ExpressLRS can run an even faster packet rate at 500hz. Unless you’re doing extreme long range you want to run the highest packet rate you can. And 1 mile in an open field is effectively almost nothing to ExpressLRS which isn’t surprising at all - but that the SPI implementation works so well is fantastic to know.
      Battery life or vtx will be a problem with this drone before the SPI receiver EVER hinders it.

      Hey Chrys, thanks! Sorry to hear that about the Skyzones. I am running 2.3 beta firmware, Steadyview receiver 20210422 v2.1 hardware revision. My antennas in this video are the lumenier double axii 2 long range and a menacerc patch antenna. This flight was just conducted in diversity mode. Lately some of the SkyZone group posters have been posting a different problem that I've never seen before, bad reception even /with/ a rapidfire module and no matter what mode they're in. As if there's something wrong with a recent batch of the goggles themselves. Hoping that's not the case. Are yours bad even in diversity mode too?

    • @CXBFPV
      @CXBFPV 3 года назад

I am also on firmware 2.3 official. It's not bad, but definitely has a lot of room for improvement. I fly mix and diversity but prefer mix mode. They are awesome goggles, just wish they could get this sorted out... Had these for a year and still struggling with them.

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 года назад +1

      @@CXBFPV I would just get a rapidfire module. It’s direct fit and fully compatible. Just need to buy a cover/door. Mix mode works well on the majority of models that I fly on steadyview but on some it’s catastrophically bad. It comes down to the mixer not working well. Skyzone has another new module coming out with 3 different mix modes, called the steadyview X. I think the problem is that there is no one-size-fits all mixer. They make a change and it does a better mix for one cam+vtx type and breaks another. The new module will also feature a screen. Unfortunately they said this requires an entire new module to do which is a huge bummer. 😞

    Great video and review of the SPI Elrs John 👍👍. I only have one quad with the ELRS on it right now and it is so enjoyable to fly. I fully agree with you on the FrSky spi receivers. One quad will do just fine like my original Crux3 and others fail safe randomly. I'm just going to convert my spi boards over to external Elrs receivers once I figure out how to do that. My Crux3 will be one of the first and a little Cine8 will be second. Moving forward I'm only going to buy boards or quads with Elrs. That Crux35 I think will be my next quad purchase.

For a while there was at least the redpine protocol but I think that was too complex. There is one bummer -- the requirement at the moment to only use betaflight 4.3, when so many great tunes out there are for lower versions. But, everyone has to upgrade eventually, right? Also, it is easier to buy something like the crux35 HD with expressLRS and just bind straight to the board like I am in this video. They don't make this in a DJI bind-and-fly form, you would have to solder the caddx air unit to the receiver pads on the board. Not hard, but just something to consider.
      Tango 2 like I have would be a solid choice, but you can also look into the radiomaster tx16s if you prefer large size radios. 👍 I have DJI FPV goggles as well but I am trying shark byte just to test something new out basically.

      Thanks Chris! Bold comment! 😃 for me I strongly believe that crossfire still has a solid place in the market; and it mainly comes down to quality control of hardware.
      There’s unfortunately some really horrible ELRS module hardware that users can step in right now, in part because _anyone_ can make it. It’s a blessing and a curse.
      Some of these companies have been shamed and embarrassed into doing better; because their mistakes can leave lasting marks on the reputation of ELRS.
      But you are right that they are going to lose out on ELRS for micros if they don’t do something there, and frankly, they may have already lost the battle there as it is. I don’t see any of the main BNF quad manufacturers caring to integrate XF when they can just go with ELRS and profit from it.

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  2 года назад

      But your mobula7 1s elrs has one major difference -- it uses a ceramic tower antenna, not a T-antenna like on the crux35! This is a very important distinction that will always result in significantly less range with ELRS. Also if you want 'more range', dial down the packet rate from 500hz to 250hz, you can even go 150hz. The higher the packet rate, the more demand on the link, and range will be decreased.

    Wrong. SPI is a hardware protocol that transports serial data from point to point, it requires three or four signals to achieve MHz bit speeds. The Semtech SX127x(900Mhz)/SX1280(2.4Ghz) LoRa hardware combined with an Espressif or STM32 Processor is the hardware used for ELRS. The SX1276/77/78/79 transceivers feature the LoRaTM long range modem that provides ultra-long range spread spectrum communication and high interference immunity whilst minimising current consumption. Using Semtech’s patented LoRaTM modulation technique is how this is being done, the existing non ELRS transceivers use hardware that does NOT have this level of encoding. The SX127x/SX1280 + STM32F4 or Espressif combination has been around for years, using it to transport ExpressLRS protocol was a given since nobody has deep enough pockets to create something better. FYI: Both the SX127x and SX1280 parts can only be connected using SPI, not I²C or UART, the STM32F4 or Espressif talk to the outside interface with serial uart.

    There is not the slightest relationship between "range" and "SPI".

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 года назад

      100% correct on paper! However, just casually ask anyone what they think about “SPI based receivers", the term has become synonymous with “shitty range.” This is only because so many hardware implementations of SPI based FrSky and FlySky receivers are bad. The FrSky D8 protocol being horribly old and slow makes matters even worse. "SPI based receiver" just has a terrible reputation.
      So, it was refreshing to fly a modern, fast link protocol implemented via SPI receiver that’s built correctly. So it works _exactly_ the way you would expect an external receiver to function, which has virtually NEVER ever been the case for FrSky SPI.
      I did this video in hopes that anyone who thinks choosing ELRS as SPI would be the same old shitty experience they had in the past with other "SPI receivers", would best reconsider that thought because they'd be missing out. Hence why in conclusion, this result is really not that surprising at all to those who know that.

    • @haka8702
      @haka8702 3 года назад

      @@JohnCuppi Alright;) I just didn't like that the impression was left that SPI is a bad standard, people quickly get confused on tech terms.
      SPI is better than USART in almost any way. Faster, simpler and likely more stable in terms of EMI stability which is always a concern in quads.
      Express-LRS is clearly the way forward, FrSky has always been a pain.
      Also given it's open source and open hardware there is going to be a lot innovation coming.

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 года назад +2

      @@haka8702 Well, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to give that impression when I made this. In fact, I was hoping that just the opposite would be cleared up by this video... that SPI is not what we should associate with being the problem. It's just all the bad FrSky and FlySky D8 receivers. I sent this to a few friends of mine before posting it, and they said they would now LOVE to see ELRS as SPI on their whoops instead of FrSky. They did not know that an SPI receiver implementation that could function extremely well like this.
      ELRS is the way forward clearly as you said, and FrSky SPI receiver implementations will definitely no longer exist for any new products. There is just no reason to keep implementing old inefficient protocols that never had any official support from the manufacturer anyway. That was one of my bullet points for ELRS over FrSky, fully open source and an open hardware spec. There is one small disadvantage to UART vs. SPI receiver that I have run into -- to update the software, a full flight controller firmware update is required. This has been a bit of a pain with updating to expressLRS 2.0 while betaflight is still in 4.3 rc at this time.
      I will have my second ELRS quad with an SPI receiver arriving tomorrow, the Mobula7 HDzero, I'm sure the range will be excellent and as expected. 👍

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  26 дней назад

      This isn't supposed to be a movie dude, it's a simple range test. To inform exactly of what I intended: what kind of range can you get from this drone, and what the video and link quality is like. Then talk about expresslrs. That's what everyone is watching this range test for to see how it did.
      300 likes is alright for a video with 13k views by the way, too. 3% to 4% like ratio is considered a "great" ratio by marketing, and this is around 2.3% so it's not bad at all. And I'm not even begging the viewer for likes until the very end of the video, I'd have more if I reminded people in the middle.
      57% of viewers are still watching at around the 6 minute mark which is pretty good on a 9 minute video. But I need more "multi media?" Considerably timed flash captions? WHAT? No.
      I feel like I'm having a conversation with an AI bot. Do you even fly drones? Are you just browsing? How did you even find this video?

    • @James-b1l
      @James-b1l 26 дней назад

      @JohnCuppi that's the problem. Communication is a 2-fold event. You can have whatever impression of yourself that you want, you can think you're the best communicator on Earth, but it's up to the receiver whether or not that information has been relayed in digestible format.
      Out of 13k people, only 300 saw fit give a like. I didn't know you were asking for likes at the end, I didn't make it that far. I found a different video with captions to follow better.
      Yes. I design, build, and pilot quads.
      Your video was supposed to be about the receiver range, I was expecting it to be the predicate of your video. I didn't expect it to be about HD visuals and your excitement. You don't have a good read on the audience's pulse. And that's like step 1 of public communication.
      You can take it personal if you like but I don't know you personally. I'm just telling you what you missed and why I didn't like it.
