What I love about your fishing style is that you don’t get all obsessive about one particular fly for a particular creek at a particular time of day. I don’t think fish are that smart, they just see potential food. You just pull out the next fly in your collection and catch a whole bunch.
@@davedave5083 I bet there are "serious" fly fishermen who are having strokes over what we're saying here. I just don't think the fly matters, you just need hungry fish.
We've had a less-than-stellar fishing season because of rain this year, and I haven't fished since May. But watching your video today, I decided to head out to my favourite creek and do some fishing. I managed to catch one five-inch brookie, and it made it all worth it. Thanks for the inspiration :)
You are very fortunate to have access to such beautiful mountain streams with Brook Trout. They never acclimatised here in Australia as Rainbow and Brown have.
I have fly fished for years but never tried Tenkara. That is fixing to change though. I just ordered a Tenkara Yari and I am so looking forward to fishing it. Great trip you had there. I subbed.
this video and rod and you switching techniques to catch fish was totally awesome! Man what a creek. You are truly blessed my friend. Thank you for the great video, maybe your best.
That is one sweet little creek. Tell NOBODY where it is. And that is one sweet little rod. Shame on you for making me covet it LOL! Like I need another rod right? Then again, I reckon I do! Sweet video flick and mahalo!
I love my Nissin Pocket Mini V3 270... sadly I broke the tip collapsing it this last weekend. Perfect for backpacking or just throwing in your pack if you heading for a hike. It is more durable than I expected with larger fish, but be careful putting it away.
Tristan. It seems that in your videos you tend to fish in the late mornings or afternoons. We always hit the streams at first light and it’s slow for us until the sun hits the water . In your opinion is Tenkara fishing better later in the day ? Or do we just have to experiment with different flies Thanks for the videos. We love them.
I HAD 2 Tenkara USA Rhodos - I was tag-teaming it with a conventional bamboo fly rod on my last trip, got careless, and dropped it, collapsed, in the stream I was fishing - I'm sure it's made it to the Mississippi by now. I went to the link you posted - it's actually cheaper by a few bucks than the Rhodo - I might have to get one.
Huge fan of your video's. I do have a question though: in your video it is hard to see, but do you think the majority of bites are on or below surface? Never see you putting any grease or something on you fly. Thanks very much!
Back in the 80s, My wife(Japanese) and I used to go up in the hills out the back of Niseko in norther japan using these small rods, a float and a small hook. We used Salmon Roe we bought from the super market as bait. We used to catch Yamame(a local species) Masu and Trout. We used to look for the deepest holes at the bottom of or near a waterfall and drop in there. Was great fun. One year, I was in the middle of a stream only to find myself encircled by Salmon heading up stream to spawn. They were so thick in the water I could pat them as the went by.
@TenkaraAddict Been looking for this exact rod everywhere, but i never found any. Can you please share me if you know of a place or someone who's selling? Or if i may buy the one you have? I'm from Canada and i would really love to have 1. Thanks a'bunch.
That looks like the perfect mountain stream. Me and my dad found. One of these and it was full of Brookies and some cutthroats. I caught my first westslope cutthroat. I’ve got tons of cuttbows but never a pure bred one. They are so pretty
That rod, like the kurenai, became a cult among tenkara anglers. I remember Tom Davis reviewing it and saying he was woried about how thin were the walls on this jem. But i never read many complaints about people breaking it despite its fragility.
@@TenkaraAddict That’s why after reading reviews on it I decided to go with the Tenkara Tanuki Pocket Ninja. It’s about 2” longer collapsed and is not a Japanese rod, but made with Japanese carbon fiber and his rods have a pretty good reputation and parts can be ordered off his website. I’m pretty happy with it and so far no breaks. 😎👍
Beautiful location. Curious, does the state stock these remote streams with brook trout, if so how, if only way to access is hiking in? Were there ever native cutthroat in them?
I'm guessing that one of the lakes that this connects to was stocked by helicopter, and then they got into the creek. I don't know if there were ever native cutthroat in there. There still are cutthroat in similar streams in the mountain range, but I don't know about this particular one.
I totally agree. It doesn't make any sense to pay such prices for just a simple collapsible rod. You can buy a good trout ranger + reel set for similar prices and you can do more, better, easier, more convenient and with more options. The whole thing about tenkara is more like a toy than an actually useful tool.
I'm new to watching this style of fishing. I'd like to ask a rather dumb question for the sake of personal clarification. My guess is that you are using barbless hooks, Thank you
Sigh After seeing this video I waited a long time for one to become available. $250 later. It arrived on Thursday and broke with the first fish on Friday. First fish I caught was a small 6" to 8" bass, the rod doubled over as I got it to shore and as I reached for the line the rod broke in two places. Sigh
at 12:40 mark, when you fell: "It hurt a little bit, but at least I didn't break the rod, and I landed the fish." - You have your priorities straight: fish first.

I second this. If they are biting they are biting yenno.
If they can see it and they’re hungry they’ll eat it. That’s simple, the way I like it too.
@@davedave5083 I bet there are "serious" fly fishermen who are having strokes over what we're saying here. I just don't think the fly matters, you just need hungry fish.
If the fish is not pressured they are very dumb. If they are very pressured they will think twice about eating the mystery fly going around.
