    I pot my christmas cactus in 1/2 orchid mix and 1/2 potting soil. It has doubled in size in only one year and seems very happy.

    The bad thing about putting Christmas cactus into a pot that is much bigger than the previous, is that the plant is not going to be able to absorb the water from the soil quick enough to prevent root rot. You are also using a glazed pot, which is not going to help pull moisture away from the soil. Your pot will cause the soil to stay wet much longer, versus using an unglazed terracotta pot. I definitely don't recommend using a much larger pot when repotting. Especially for people who are new to being owners of succulents/cacti. Also, the point of repotting isn't just to add newer, healthier soil. It also allows you to do a health check on your plant, you get to observe the roots and possibly catch anything before it becomes detrimental to your plant. I also do not water right after repotting. Because often times when repotting, roots are broken. If you have broken roots on your plant and you add water to the soil right away, you run the risk of root rot. It is best to wait at least 10 days, some people even say 14 days, before watering.

      And I've never thought about repotting being like a check-up on the condition of the plant. This is important though. I have found things that hurt the plant almost every time I've repotted from the store.

    • @johnvonhorn2942
      @johnvonhorn2942 Год назад +3

      @ B Humphries Well said. Moving them up to a much larger pot is a terrible idea. I'd second your comment on using an unglazed clay pot too. I've got a "Queen of the Night" (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) jungle cactus and will repot it into sphagnum moss, perlite, orchid bark and compost in a 1:1:1:1 mix with a half well rotted manure into a clay pot. I'll sprinkle a little bone meal into the mix and see what happens. They like humidity but also like fast, well draining soil.

    I have a lot of squirrels in my yard And they started digging my Christmas cactus I read that Bloodmeal will keep them away.. well it is also a fertilizer. I put a hand full in the top of each cactus plants. I can’t believe how much they have grown in the last 2-3 weeks. And I haven’t seen any squirrels in about .a month in the front or back yard. 0:11 0:11 0:11
    My mom used to always have 2 big pots just full. She took one in the darkest bedroom the first of October and the other one the first of Dec. then she would bring out one out of the dark at Thanksgiving and the other at Christmas. They were always beautiful and full of flowers for the holidays.

    Mine was passed down from my grandmother to my parents when they got married and then my mother gave all us children a plant from the main plant. My brother now has the original. But the plant is approximately 160 years old! When I repotted mine I didn’t know what I was doing and put it in a bigger pot, and a very deep pot. It hasn’t bloomed since and has been about 5 years. I understand that they like to be root bound. So I thought that was why. It also go pale and limp. But now I have put coffee and coffee grounds around the plant and it is getting greener and is perking up. I guess the soil wasn’t acidic enough. It hasn’t exploded with growth though. Any suggestions for me? Should I change the soil and put it back in it’s pot? It is looking healthy and I do have new growth just not a ton of it. I would say that my cactus is bigger than yours with thick trunks and is in approximately the same size pot but a bit deeper..

      I too have a plant that my mom had and before her my grandma and before her... anyway its my great, great grandma Elizabeth Adams plant. Its about 100 to 120 years old.I have had several desendents of the origional plant. One of the grandkd plants or kid plants is dying. It may have root rot. Im not sure. I am going to transplant it tomorrow. it is not the origional one.....I dont believe, anyway I have made plants out of and given away to relatives and friends.tHEY ARE BOTH VERY ,VERY LARG PLANTS. Im going to put sand and a cactuss mix for soil. The plant smells really bad. That is a bad sign.I was leaving it in water to water it FROM the bottom up and now I know that I should not do that. Both rAeLLY OLD PLANTS BLOOMED MAGNIGICNTLY THIS LAST WINTER AND NOW ONE IS NEAR DEATH. i WOULD ADD A PIC BUT i DONT KNOW IF THATS POSSIBLE ON THIS SITE.

    Just a gut feeling is for me to repot my Christmas cactus - a gift from my sister this Christmas - in Fertilome brand commercial potting mix for succulents. It came in about a 6" diameter plastic growers pot from the nursery wrapped like a present. I'll be potting up using an 8" diameter terra cotta pot with a drainage hole in the bottom, watering it in, and viola! Just a mild transition to give the roots some breathing room. Going by the size of the plant itself and the pot size, it appears a bit cramped. She surprised me with it as a gift, so I'm just learning via watching videos such as these. What do you think?

    • @gkava2349

      Often the purple leaves are due to too much direct sunlight; try moving it into a less bright light

      I just learned that they are tropical plants and not a true cactus that likes super dry climates. Mine was turning purple too so I took it out of my window and on my counter while at work and put it back in my window for about 4-5 hours of light after work and now keeping the soil more moist (but don't let it sit in water, make sure it can drain) As soon as it gets dry to the touch, I water it. Needing to repot it because it's in the original black planter still. Still debating on which soil to use. Some say cactus soil, others say a different mixture.

    I have a cactus that is getting HUGE and thriving in the pot it's in (a little bit bigger than the one you used here, but not much bigger)... I have never done anything but water it every couple weeks. When I asked a couple "green thumbs" about putting it in a bigger put, they both sound around and exclaimed very firmly "NO"... LOL.
