- "When So Far was released in 1987, it gave fans a glimpse of the Dead playing to each other, not to an audience, and it was fascinating to see how closely they listened to one another. Recorded in an empty Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium and in a full Oakland Coliseum Arena, So Far was a hybrid concert experience, and remains one of the most intimate videotaped looks into the Grateful Dead creative process." -David Lemieux

Plus it includes great playing, great harmony, and great production. I loved it!!
Thanks David !
For God's sake, Would you PLEASE release this on Blu-Ray already!!!!!!!
@fungusuas goodasufugu I agree, but releasing it could be tricky. You would need the band members and Jerry's family to agree on it.
That’s what I thought but wasn’t sure those were the best days of my life. 😍🥰 Going on summer tour
Just what I needed to hear after my Grandfather's funeral this morning
R.I.P to Grandpa 🙏✌
Much love to you and fam stranger.
Sorry for your loss.😮
Phil is consistently the coolest badass dressed like a total dork dad. I love it
He’s completely a family man since getting married in ‘84. So yes, he is a dork dad.
Greetings from India.....Sri Sache Maha Prabu Ki Jay Ho! May all know the grace of their hearts....Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om...
Namaste 🙏🏻 Jerry was blessed by mother India- you can see and hear it in his last project ♥️
@@DougB108 If I remember correctly some of Jerry's ashes were put into the Ganges River (sp) but strangely enough he had never visited India. Sad but cool at the same time.....
@craig tracy- Thank you…That’s incredible. I had no idea about Jerry’s ashes. May he rest in Ma’s lap 🙏🏻
Nothing like the Brent days, I only saw them with Bruce Hornsby and Vince, still grateful I had a cool mom who took me to my first show at Buckeye Lake the summer I turned 13
Damn I see so many posts saying Buckeye Lake was their first show. Way to go Ma!
Buckeye Lake was great ‘93; ‘94 was good too
I still have my VHS of this program! Haven`t played it in a number of years but I do remember the last time I played it ( to transfer to dvd) it played great!
I have this on VHS........but haven't had a functional VCR in ages. lol
Stop on by anytime
Needed this today. The band playing my favorite song, well past their hay day playing to nobody in a full arena.. Almost poetic really...thank you to whoever decided to post this...Thank you.
If Brent was still in the band they were not well past their prime.
Past their hey day? You dont know the Grateful Dead!
@@Ilovemusic793 I don't! Still love their music though!
My first show was 12/69.
The best show I’ve ever seen was a JGB show in spring ‘89.
So no, they were not past their heyday.
@@crawlinjohn 👍
That was 37+ years ago...my,
'what a long strange trip it's been...'
to all my friends
"never stop rockin'...till the moon
goes down"! 🥲
Magnificent! Greetings from Paraguay! 🍀🍀🍀
I consider it a privilege , that I got to see them back from 87nto 89....Foxboro Ma 87 ......Oxford Me 88......Buffalo NY 89....David , you are doing God's work my friend....👍👍👍I'm sorry , but I can't get into the snoozefest that's dead & company.....just way too slow ALL THE TIME.....
Saw all those shows you listed- good times ✌️
saw all those shows also
What an amazing show.
I miss seeing all the guys playing with each other but I'm grateful for the years I did get. I did get to see Ratdog at the Marin Vets 5-21-05. Last time at the vets building was for a guitar show before covid.
I was at the Ratdog show in NH the day Jerry died, there was a huge spontaneous memorial for Jerry on the beach before the show. Heads from all over New England showed up whether they were going to the show or not.
This is wonderful
Brent was such a strong backing vocalist!
Absolutely
When Brent died, part of Jerry died. Neither him nor the dead were ever the same after Brent’s passing. Sure, they had their runs and moments but overall it never had that same cohesiveness they had with Brent.
Just beautiful!!!
An absolutely phenomenal performance! But then, why wouldn't it be! God bless the Grateful Dead!
Jerry, an angel on your pillow. Pm.
Hearing Jerry playing gave me the chills. What a great fucking song from the classic Workingman' Dead.
THE FIRST TIME I SEEN THEM WAS AT ALPINE VALLY IN WISCONSIN WAS TRIPIN BALLS AND THIS WAS THE ONCORE SO COOL
Love this - so glad you brought it out. Such a stately, glowing version.
Can't fully express in words how much I love this footage/Version ❤
My first album was Working Man's Dead. UJB was my first "favorite" song. I can be choosy and critique fairly but also count on 1 hand the GD or cover tunes that I don't care to hear again. This is still a special one, loved the Video tape, would love it on DVD.
So far is a great video to watch while tripping
Still have the VHS of this. The lead in to the start of UJB is pretty cool as the band gets ready to play🎶🕺
I miss being on the road with the DEAD more than life itself.
It is tough to realize how long ago this all was. I grew up in the S.F Bay Area (The City and Millbrae), got to see The Boys a lot.
I remember they sent out a postcard when this came out. I was so excited.
Good for the Soul
This music is.
Enjoy these narrow strips of blurry stock footage rather than watching one of the world's greatest guitarists play a solo.
beautiful eastern Delaware
THURSDAY NITE I'M GOING TO SEE A JERRY GARCIA TRIBUTE BAND AT A VENIU CALLED THE RANCH IN FORT MYERS VOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS THE DEAD I REALLY MOSS GOING TO SEE THEM AND THE TRIP THAT WAS THE PARKING LOT LOL
I am not Uncle John. Though, coincidentally I called this tune today and was named after my Great grandfather John Kamlet who passed a little before I was born in November 1974. Your old friend and coworker, Yaniv
I still have this on VHS but no player. The playing on here is a hot one
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
so clean and focused i dont know whats happening i,ll get back to ya,,,, still i love it ,so much , i miss this they must be hi af
Superb.
Like a well worn tie dye shirt; a little frayed at the edges but comfortable and still bursting with color.
Really sweet vid . Thanks
I have been following this great series since day 1. This is number 112 I believe.
Is there any way we can see the WE CAN RUN video that was made for the Audubon Society? I haven't seen it since it aired every day for a while on MTV. Hopefully you're allowed to share it in this series. THANK YOU!
Talk to me. Have loved y'all for many years.
Quinn.
Good day, good people (~);-}
BRENT !!!!!!!!!! ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
So Far Sooooooooooo Good
✨⚡💀⚡✨
Perhaps my favorite Dead song. I do miss the A Capella part at the end. Is that on the video. I also found a few more verses Jerry recorded in a solo acoustic show. I'm not positive they're authentic but they seem to fit right in.
“Are you kind?”
_This song wanna make me to turn people old and the aging can only be reversed if ice is used_
where does the time go?
This band is pretty good. I just want to know how does the song go!? Maybe I'll figure it out.
This is glorious! Is So Far available on DVD or blu?
Yes. A couple years back they released a Blu-ray set with all the concerts that had been released up to that time. I got it on Amazon, so good hunting to ya!
Was all of this staged for this reason or is it a "practice" setting?
As long as I've been following/listening to the Dead I don't remember this.
Yes they went into the Marin County Vets and just shot footage of themselves playing with no audience. Then later in the video they switch over to 12/31/85 gig at Oakland Coliseum. Great stuff.
OK, this is a great performance, but WTF does Brent have his keyboard set to? It's really ruining the vibe for me.
Are you kind
This would be sick if they were done up in corpse paint and like spitting fake blood and stuff
You know like blasting de Marshall stacks and stuff Making loud music
Pretty bad version
Jerry looks like the homeless guy who hangs out in front of the co-op
Awful. Jerry looks bad. 😞
I didn’t realize it’s a beauty contest. He still makes his guitar sing :)
He sounds fine. He’s looked much worse than this.
@@averycordrick8789 right this is pretty far from awful imho. And op should see some video of '81 to '83 Jerry. If he looks bad here, well op would probably be left speechless seeing him thru some of them years. I love Jerry, even when he was down he tried to bring people up.👍✌
