In this video we show how to modify the factory control switch boxes on a Honda CB450 using basic hand tools to allow the use of aftermarket handlebars on the motorcycle.
Swapping our the handlebars on your vintage Honda motorcycle is quite a common thing to do. However Honda built their bars different from everybody else; the wires that connect the control switch boxes to the rest to the harness are run on the inside of the bars. While a great idea for durability and looks, it makes service and swapping out the bars very difficult.
The majority of the aftermarket handlebars on the market do not have the passages holes allowing the wires to be run internally (without modifying the bars). The next easiest thing to do is to notch the switch boxes to allow the wires to be run externally along the bottom of the bars.

A dremel works really well to create those notches. That's what I used to notch my switches. Thanks for the vid.

I had to reposition my switch, so thanks for showing that the pin comes out. You saved me drilling another hole in my handlebars.

I put the holes in my new handlebars using a hand-held electric drill and then a Dremel. Took it a little bit of work, but I like the finished result with no wires showing. I wish I'd seen this video before doing that job. I didn't know those pins in the switches could be pulled out with a vice grips. That would have made my life way easier. I took my Dremel with a small cutting wheel and cut the metal pin down, nearly cutting through the switch wires by accident. I nicked one wire just a bit, but it only cut into the outside rubber coating, not the copper wire. It's crazy how quickly things can go wrong when you've got a Dremel cutting wheel spinning at 3000 RPMS just millimeters away from important wires. I made a similar mistake when I was cutting a bracket off my battery box while it was on the bike. For some reason I didn't think to unbolt the safety unit box and move it out of the way while cutting the bracket nearby. Didn't cut through any of the wires, but easily could have.

    Thanks. Enjoyed.

A cleaner way to feed wires in the bar is Boric Acid Powder. The powder is slick and safe to use

I did this mod but I used the correct diameter metal burr on a Dremel tool. You have to be careful but it was done in about 2 minutes. Just an FYI for anyone looking for alternatives.

What was the brand/model of the new handlebar? Was it Emgo Superbike 7/8? It looks great and more ergo.

Are the wires on my 78 CB 750 in bars?

X that's ugly it's better to make the holes in the bar and run the cables so it won't show

I hope I don’t have to take the headlight apart to take the handlebars off..
