This was really the most helpful bike repair video I have seen so far. Without it, I wouldn't have dared to open that thing - which (after 7 years) had become almost useless.. Now, everything works as new. This is amazing! Thank a lot!!
As someone that's desiring to take care of my lower end mountain bike, I cannot tell you how much your videos mean. I've learned so much from you and these instructions for us that are working towards higher-end bikes later mean just as much to us as any of your videos do for those that already have higher-end bikes. Thank you so much from Texas.
My friends with all that expensive fork always tell me not to bother cleaning or fixing cheap parts and just get the expensive ones. But i always make full use of them and clean them and service them.
thank u guys so much!!! without this video i wouldnt have been able to have been as comfortable on my bike as i had problems with my fork and all bike shops said that there isnt any point for them to service it themselves. but now i know how simple it is, i was able to do it myself
Yes, it is servicing. It is cleaning and lubricating in this case. It is all the servicing the shock can warrant. You can also service sheep: a different procedure and generally against the law, except in NZ.
Whether its a full service or not, i'd rather service my forks like the video shows me than let my forks get worse. Reid Welch, so are you telling us, that when your insomnia kicks in, you're doing more with sheep than just counting them lol
Definitely going to give this a try! I seem to find videos telling me how to work on the FOX 36 or whatever other latest-greatest MTB shock. But revamping older/less expensive components is an area that is lacking.
I love youtube when I am wondering how to do something I turn here first , great video shock work great thank you didn't have the money to buy new shocks, cheers!
After about 2 years I decided it was probably time to service my entry level Suntour fork. Everything was going good until I went to remove the circle springs on the upper seals...one broke...hopefully that is not "too" critical, I'm sure it is there mainly to help keep water and dirt from entering the lowers. Oh well guess that means I will just have to really keep on top of maintenance. Everything went back together fine and the fork is functioning amazing now! Thanks for this tutorial.
Hey MBR magazine. I'm just com8ng back to mtb after a short break. I thing videos like this are great cos not everyone can afford a top shelf bike with good components. This video shows how to maintain even cheape bikes and still have loads of fun without spending stuuupid money. Some people just don't have them. Thanks and looking forward to see more of Your vids.
Fantastic walkthrough. I have to use a 10 year old bike that neven seen service now since somebody stole and trashed mine and the fork is so stiff. I had no clue how they worked as my bike has no suspension. Now I dare take it apart. Thanks
+Didier Martins Zero maintenance on a budget fork and you'll have non-suspension. What you're saying analogous to "yay I'm dead, no health concerns" or "Hey I make no money, no taxes!"
This video is very useful. I know how to fix and maintain all parts of a bike; except shock forks. Both of my kids' mountain bikes have forks which fall into this category. They need some work to keep them top notch, and now I can do it in my garage. I will also look for a video by Al to help me service the push rods and springs!
I normally service upper end forks and have always been a bit weery of servicing lower end forks, not knowing or what to expect once I have it apart... nice video... this will help.
As someone who rode budget (middle of the road) bikes most of his life, I'd almost say it's the way to go. I have a (relatively) high end bike now, and it's not the mecca you're searching for, or what several times the money would merit.
This was a easy to understand video made me service my own forks now they are much more bouncy again i was stripping my bike down and doing a service anyways so this made it easy to do this aswell so thanks guys! :)
thanks, I just wanted to check there was nothing too fancy in there. job done! found out just how shagged my forks are (chrome worn right through in large amounts) but at least it's an improvement
suntour xct, i have on my bike xca so this will be realy helpful for me in one year when i will decide to clean whole bike. Exelent, mine is full of dust because of cheap oils and now i will put some quality ones
on these types of forks, can you put in a bit of fork oil just to keep the insides lubricated? thanks so much for the "modest" repair video. anyone can take apart a high end part and make it work great becuase it is meant to work well. it is good to see something that helps the rest of us.
With the fork taken apart, that would be a great time to install boots or garters to protect them. Those rubber or hopefully silicone accordion things. I'd put a little grease inside them, then with weight compressing the forks, to get some air out of them, I would secure & seal the boots with screw clamps and maybe glue. And if any glue is showing, I would just PlastiDip over the glue & lower part of the fork. I would also use a shock sock thing, to protect the rear shock & spring. Something that lets air through, but keeps dirt & water out. And I would use screw clamps to secure it on. I would also make sure the boots & sock, can support the full travel of the suspension.
I tried something very similar to this having seen it in another video. Having loosened the bolts at the bottom, I then tapped them to loosen them. No effect. I tapped more, still nothing. I ended up belting them full force. Still no movement, only by now the forks were completely stuffed.
Thanks, the chrome on mine is in decent shape, but mine are an even more basic version with just a spring on one side and the other tube is empty. I wonder if there are any retrofit kits out there for my old Suntour's, just looking at them it seems like they are mostly the same dimensionally compared to some of their better forks.
coke or about any soda pop and aluminum foil remove rust better than anything I have seen next to sand blasting...I dont recommend blasting method for your suspension parts tho
I've got some SR SUNTOUR XCR MG 26" forks that I couldn't maintain as I didn't have the tools at the time. But, see a 6:00 min mark, what's the spring called in the black push rod?? As one of mine has snapped and the other one due to. Any information would be appreciated. Need to get my bike fixed before the end of November as I'm doing a fundraiser for pancreatic cancer UK.
Thanks for this - very useful and easy to follow. I'm having a problem with disassembling a vintage (2004) RockShox GPS Metro fork like this, and wonder if you can help. The bolt on the left-hand (spring) leg undoes fine, but the bolt on the right leg won't come undone - it just spins around, like whatever it's fixed into inside the leg has come adrift. Any ideas what's going on and what I can do about it? Saw off the bolt head and use a pin punch to free the stanchions, then replace the bolt afterwards? All advice gratefully received. And remember, guys, plenty of grease around the bush area. The ladies love it ;-)
+drengskap try compressing the forks, sometimes this will lock the spinning leg enough to undo the bolt, if that doesn't work then saw it off or drill it out.
+noog Thanks for the advice, I'll give that a go - haven't had time to get back to these forks since my original posting, and they seem to be working OK, but I'd still like to be able to get them apart. I predict I'll end up having to saw the head off the bolt - just didn't want to do it without getting some advice that this was a reasonable thing to do, I don't have much experience of working on suspension forks.
just done this job on my XCR forks on my trek but the stanchions are wrecked all the surface chroming has worn off, need to up my maintenance schedule on my new forks when i get them.
John Hedman When you work in bike servicing, it's often people coming in with their cheap stuff, even worse when it's cheap stuff they didn't maintain.
i did this to my rock shox judy tt and i wanted to renew the seals. but the seals literally are stuck in there and when i pulled them out the seals broken..so there is still rubber of the seals inside of the lower legs..any tips on how it could remove the rubber which sticks in there? maybe some alcohol to solve them?
Just been given a set of front forks, after only just getting into mountain biking and just doing things cheap and easy - till I decide to spend some real money on a descent bike.. The forks have been resprayed and couldn't tell you what make they are.. But thought I'd do a bit of care and revamp of them.. but when I took lower legs off one had a bolt holding it in place at bottom, the other side was a push in cap! - the 2 uppers were 2 different lengths of about 3"( But don't look like been cut by anyone), and the shorter one didn't have any spring, push rod nothing and looking inside it- didn't look like there ever has been ??? the other longer one has a push rod and is fine, with an adjuster on top of leg. Anyone have any ideas ?? could it be a case of a missing spring ? but why the difference in length! any advice will be most helpful !! tnx
I have some zoom fargo forks like this,,is there any way to stiffen them up loads as they're on a kick scooter and I'm constantly bottoming out because if the front forks diving LOADS ! PLEASE HELP MATE !!!
Yes. You can also use KY jelly, virgin olive oil or penut butter. But seriously, any grease will do. A tube of Motorex will cost you about $10 and can be used on all your bolts and bearings. It will last you years. Any automotive or bike grease should work just fine.
Can the bushings be rotated 90 degrees on most cheap forks? This would postpone replacement somewhat. Are replacement bushings for such cheapos even available freely?
These are the forks that came on my diamondback axis. This will help extend the life of the forks, but I don't foresee the forks laying as long as the rest of the bike. When they go, what might be a good option with a lockout?

WD40 is a water dispersant (that's what the WD stands for) and it's partly oil. My trouble with people using it tends to be that it attracts grit and dust like it's going out of fashion which like in this particular use case you generally don't want. They make some nice ptfe spray that doesn't attract crap so much that's pretty nice. Honestly there's proper oil for this particular job though..

this is NOT servicing your shock at all.... u just cleaned the push rods and bushes
Yes, it is servicing. It is cleaning and lubricating in this case. It is all the servicing the shock can warrant. You can also service sheep: a different procedure and generally against the law, except in NZ.
right giant... . shop...... they are mostly all shit things.
marty vreede this is most definitely servicing the fork....

Cheers guys, I'm so crap with spanners, but even I managed to to this service. Worked I treat!
A really useful instructional video - this has transformed my son's bike and the fork is moving so much more smoothly now. Thanks!
Grease around the bush.....polish the rod....I got a little turned on but very informative. Thank you
Warren B “ something long and pokey” lol. Such tech talk!
It tends to rust if not used so dont be shy, slap it on.
In the end wipe it down
To summarise: don't damage the bushes or rods
' Just slap it on...don't be shy.'
🤣🤣🤣
May be a cheap fork but your vid simply shows how to maintain them - thanks.
Hey MBR magazine. I'm just com8ng back to mtb after a short break. I thing videos like this are great cos not everyone can afford a top shelf bike with good components. more vids like this please. lots of information and it's presented in a way everyone can understand.

Great tutorial, just performed this on an old rock shox dart 1 coil fork. Works great now!
Great video. Very informative. I feel confident going at my stiff forks now.
I liked the video. I will have to give this a try until I can afford some shox or fox's. I have 1,500 miles on my never serviced forks
You save my life man.Thank you.
thanks, I just wanted to check there was nothing too fancy in there. job done! found out just how shagged my forks are (chrome worn right through in large amounts) but at least it's an improvement

Put a bit of spray oil down the stanchions every now and again makes it smoother and keeps dirt out
"Lube the long pokey thing, and rub it on the bush" !
This guy is great !
Completely demystified it for me.. Great video. Thanks.
Done. Thank you for this my suspension is working great again.
Love and marriage, Al and bike maintenance, you can't have one without the other.

I would also like the look of the accordion boots and sock, because they would hide the shininess & possible bright colors of the suspension.
Helped me a lot. Thanks for the vid
Great video mate just what I needed
i bet you love being part of the mary-jane smoker community too, very positive stuff
Thanks mate! Great explanation.
Great instruction, could upgrade the audio and camera angles. But got the instruction, thanks.
wow u just helped me make my crap zoom shock into a very good working item .. over the bloody moon
Thank again! Another awesome video! Very helpful!

thanks for the tip! they all ways say to me my fork is disposable even it has a bolt under it
This sounds odd but does work. Use Vaseline and it gives a great ride. Use it on the spring too.
What about removing the push rods that are inside the stantions? Isn't that where all the action happens in terms of springs and dampening?
Very, very, very useful. Thank you!
nice share dude...
will try to my low low entry fork
hope it work

I would use Buzzys Slick honey
just done this job on my XCR forks on my trek but the stanchions are wrecked all the surface chroming has worn off, need to up my maintenance schedule on my new forks when i get them.
Haha you could see how hard it was to keep a straight face for him when working with such garbage. Never the less you made the fork look a lot better.
John Hedman When you work in bike servicing, it's often people coming in with their cheap stuff, even worse when it's cheap stuff they didn't maintain.
BrainSeepsOut I work as a mechanic. Fixed bikes for eight years, thats why I noticed your look hahaha

I hope I can free a seized but clean Dart 2 on my bike I bought used.. If not, suntour XCRs here we come!
can i use vaseline instead of grease? very well made video! (my springs are sr suntour xcm custom on a 2015 specialized pitch comp 650b)
Yes. You can also use KY jelly, virgin olive oil or penut butter. But seriously, any grease will do. A tube of Motorex will cost you about $10 and can be used on all your bolts and bearings. It will last you years. Any automotive or bike grease should work just fine.
You might just wanna bring your bike into a shop if you dont have the right grease as you need fork oil for those too
If you haven't got lithium grease then get a tub of Vicks Voporub - www.vicks.co.uk/en-gb/shop-products/vicks-decongestants/vicks-vaporub-ointment
Never imagined Brad Pitt was such a good mech
Can the bushings be rotated 90 degrees on most cheap forks? This would postpone replacement somewhat. Are replacement bushings for such cheapos even available freely?
Thanks alot. I Appreciate you.✌
OK as far as it went but what about the spring and damper?
MISTAKE
Put the grease inside the lowers not on the stanchions, this way the grease will stay in the fork
Hi! I just want to ask if i can change my fork from 26 to 27? is that advisable?
How regular should the forks be taken apart to clean and grease?
How do you change the springs? I'd like to install weaker springs.
These are the forks that came on my diamondback axis. This will help extend the life of the forks, but I don't foresee the forks laying as long as the rest of the bike. When they go, what might be a good option with a lockout?
+RIPbiker13 How much do you want to pay?
I think a pair of Rockshox xc 30 might be the right choice: good quality basic level forks with lockout and rebound control (not sure about that) at a very good price. I recommend checking them out
Very nice helpful video.
nice going to give this a go this arvo. its never been done in 3 years =s hope fully its not to bad ha
My bike has RockShox Recon Silver (coil) and I've been told it needs fluid. Not sure how to do it, thought entrance level forks didn't have fluid (coil ones)...
if my forks are adjustable, should I set the preload to minimum (or maximum) or leave it as is before disassembly?
I find that it works better on minimum but I would just try it and see what feels best
for RST's and cheap forks i find better to put inside oil instead of grease ,i know the manufacturer says grease is what they recommend but the life of the forks are no more than one year with grease ,my gila pro t8 is working for me more than 6 years in the xc bike doing the stanchion oil service so i could say the oil is the best lube for this cheap forks.
just what I needed to know , thanks for a good clear tutorial ;)
don't have bolts at the bottom? don't no what to do. been looking for ages they all say undo bolts at bottom. mine for some reason don't have any?
Can u spray degreaser in to get rid if all the old grease then thoroughly rinse before nxt lart
Probably better to just wipe it down as the degreaser could still linger around in the crevices.
What grease did you use and what grease would you recommend using
Use sram butter
Get a tub of standard lithium grease ..
brilliant thanks i've got some of that
Elbow or pork grease is best but then grease is the word. Or is it bird? Maybe bird is THE word.
What could I use besides grease? Or do I have to use it?
bbblllaaaj use crisp and dry or lard if your skint.
no just joking use bike grease for bikes its not expensive couple of quid chain reaction cycles online. www.chainreactioncycles.com/weldtite-lithium-grease/rp-prod5959
what kind of grease did you use? newbie here
Oscar Villalva grease lightning!

What is the Park model number for a "Long Pokey Thing"?
I changed the oil in fork Friday and it is super soft (bottoms out) now. I add the correct oil and the amount. Added more and change preload with no change. Any help.
is this fork having preload n lockout or just preload?
i'm having a suspension fork with only preload... do i do the service as shown or any other procedure? the two bottom bolts are present.
i ride an adidas genius gt9001 ( basic basic fork 100mm )
what kind grease used for fork seal, doesn't make damage for seal?
My Rockshox Dart 3 has a dampener adjuster in place of one of the bolts, how would I remove to stantions from the lowers
jaden veiga Pull out the rebound/damper adjuster out and then you'll see a hexagon bolt.
We'll use this long pokey thing
Can you use the very finest steel wool (0000) . to clean the rusted stansions?
We've never tried it, but if they're rusty you've probably got nothing to lose by having a go! Just take it gently...
What if my lockout doesnt work? What should i do? I got an sr suntour xcr coil fork
My don’t really work either, I got told that it might be due to preload but I changed it to soft and hard and it dint do much
Can you use super white mupti purpose grease
Nice sneakers dude. What are they?
i have RST Air fork without a damping adjuster. Does it work the same way?
Oeiyes Seyieo yes
Is there anything else I can use in place of grease? I heard petroleum jelly bug am not sure if this will truly work.
+LeighPing just FYI WD40 is a degreaser, not a lubricant, and will dry up after a few days, causing anything it was lubricating to sieze
