We actually have pretty mild winters in Michigan compared to a lot of Midwest states since the Great Lakes insulate us. Also, Michigan's roads are actually in great shape today. I can drive hundreds of miles up north now on brand new road. And most of Metro Detroit has been completely redone in the past few years too. In fact, I drove south to Ohio this winter and noticed that Ohio's roads are now in worse shape than Michigan.
i don't know where you live in michigan. i have lived there 70 years and the winter sucks. it is the 3rd most cloudy state in the lower 48 and one of the 5 worst states for snow. my windshield has been broken 7 times from chunks from the road hitting it with 2 tires and rims damaged from the roads.
@@mortsims if you live in SE Michigan, you only average 30” of snow. I saw parts of Tennessee had more snow than us this winter. States out west and out east can get 30” of snow in one weekend. This winter, for instance, has been so mild and easy. Most of winter has been between 32 and 45 degrees. It’s supposed to hit 50+ degrees again this week.
this has been a mild winter. the detroit area get's a lot less snow than the rest of michigan. when i lived in sault ste marie we got 60 inches one time.@@travissmith9488
Does anyone in here who IS from Michigan, happen to know if FERNDALE would be a nice livable place for average single people (without families)? How is public transportation over there? Is getting around town gonna be OK even like for people who don't own a car? I am on a fixed income, and do not plan on commuting to Detroit much. I just wanna live in a nice safe quiet neighborhood all alone by myself; that is close proximity to basic amenities like grocery shopping, general stores, and public transportation. Absolutely DO NOT plan on raising a family anytime soon. Just lookin' to rent or buy a small home to live ALONE in peace, and possibly even RETIRE there. What is your advice or opinions on this? 🤔
Ferndale is a great place. Public transport consists of primarily buses and ride sharing like Uber or Lyft. Everything you need is close by and with grocery delivery nowadays you have options to get all of your essentials pretty easily. Reach out directly if you have more specific questions and I'd be happy to help.
@@mortsimsOK, I've been hearin' some NICE things about Ann Arbor too... How much does it cost to rent a decent 1 bedroom apartment in a safe/quiet neighborhood over there? I plan on livin' ALONE, and just wanna be within relatively close proximity to basic conveniences; like food and public transportation.

What about the small towns … specifically Gladwin MI, not familiar at all, curious though have a family member freshly there just few months, but I’d like to know the opinion of persons who are actually familiar… please and thank you!!
Farm town . Right on the edge of some of Michigan's outdoorsman country. Beautiful beyond words. My mother was born and buried about fifty miles east of there. Dad was in the CCC camp in the thirties. Better bring a way off making a living with you. If you are a city person this is no place for you. Winters can be tough, and long. You are deep in the heart of farm country. Life is a bit slower paced, and conservative. It was a good place for a boy to grow up in the woods.
i just sold my house there. decent small town safe place to live. sidewalks roll up by 6pm every day. you have to drive to midland ( one hour away) for decent medical care. people are friendly. housing prices are decent.
From someone who's lived in W Mi since 1973. It isn't the cold winter as much as the oppressively long, damp, cloudness of our winters. There are numbers of places that are just as cold but since they get a lot more sun and less humidity they don't feel as bad! 30 degrees in Michigan is worse than 30 almost anywhere else. Heck even April and May usually often suck! Second, our property taxes are super high, especially for any new buyer here vs. another state - and even worse if you live in any type of city vs. a township! It's not so much the assessed value, that's high almost everywhere, as it is the millage rate! God help you if you don't get homestead exemption! When I compare total Property/sales/income tax bills bills, apples to apples we're usually way higher. Michigan is really a high tax state disguishing as a middle tax state. Lastly still our car insurance is still damn high even with the changes, compared to many other locales as well as utilities costs. You are right about the lakes and June through Oct is spectacular!
from may to november there is no better place to live. october is my favorite month. after october head south because the winter totally sucks. come back april 15 and start over.
Came from Florida and the health care is 100% better its a pain to get in here
Dang, FL always has the upper hand and the nice weather!
Which part of Florida?

Highest car insurance state.
It's in the top 5-10 for sure. But other cost of living factors need to be looked at to get a good overview of everything.
