  • If you live in an apartment and hate taking your doggie pal down to use the restroom 5x in a hour then The Porch Potty is for you. This is my review of the Porch Potty Standard size from www.PorchPotty.com. At the end of the video, I take you outside and show you how I clean it to lessen the smell of waste and to keep it clean.

Put a layer of kitty litter in the basin to kill smell. It will also clump the urine so it doesn't spill on you. Then just toss it. That's what I do. I have the exact same porch potty.

What do you do to hose it down? That would just run all the litter.

@@ericaalyssa1244 if you need to rinse it, just do it after you've emptied all the kitty litter. Every week or two.

I feel your pain of maintenance! I have an outdoor turf run. To eliminate smells completely I use Nok-out deodorizer. Diluted 50/50 with water, I sprinkle it on with the watering can, Now I've discovered pooch pads ( not the turf type) for my Doxies at home and traveling. Waterproof backing, protects the floor, smells like grass to the dogs, has odor control for us and is machine washable. I just rotate pads as needed. No fuss, no mess, no dumping of trays, no smelly turf or concrete!

  • @peculiarchap
    @peculiarchap 10 лет назад +11

I bought a mid-sized tray, put a soil and grass in it, and made a "garden" balcony, difference is, it's just grass, no flowers or so, just grass, and that's what my pooch uses. I have to change the grass usually after winter, but works for me. (also doesn't smell).

It's not about the fact that piss smells, but the technology behind that potty which makes the piss smell to last and that the maintenance is way too time consuming in order to get the required result.

For others checking in here...I found the solution thanks to my local janitor warehouse store. A Canadian ( I believe) product called Good Riddance/ Chem ecology is what the label says. Instead of using liquid product with enzymes it's a liquid natural product with natural microorganisms. I just dilute it in water, pour over turf, and leave it on. . These microorganism multiple and eat up the smell. So far...FABULOUS and relatively cheap. My fussy cocker spaniel will use the potty even after I've just rinsed it with this stuff. So...check it out perhaps. ; ) As for soiled spots, I use gloves and flushable toilet wipes to clean spots everytime I remove shizzle. ha. Easy really.

First of all thank you for your video. We moved to Colorado springs and they will hold it until it stops snowing. I did notice the multiple trips to clean the potty using a flower type pot to pour water. If you have a washer and dryer you can split the hot water output and place a hose that you can take to the potty. It's hot and works great for cleaning. I blow minds of neighbors walking by. Let me know if you need pictures. It's extremely easy. Again thank you for the review!

I've never seen someone make something so simple so complicated.
    1. Fill your "basin" with something strong to kill the smell. The blue liquid used to clean toilets might be an idea. Boom Smell eliminated
    2. Use the drainage hose to drain into the proper bucket. Boom bucket problem solved.
    3. Get 5 empty 1ltr water bottles, and fill them all in 1 trip. Then rinse them.
    Thank me later.

This is overly complicated. I have the same model, only I use a hose instead of a catch basin to go through the drain spout off my balcony. I only use 2-4 gallons of water a day and the water runs completely clear. The only problem I'm having is the smell now that the weather is getting warm and I don't rinse twice daily. To everyone who thinks this product is too much work or high maintenance, I've tried less expensive options and while the price tag on this item is steep in my opinion, it's better than the cheaper alternatives (pee pads are more in the long run) and certainly more aesthetically pleasing. Regular rinsing will also keep the pee residue from building up (at least in a dry climate). I live in an upstairs condo with no water source on my patio. I bought one of those stretchy hoses and an adapter for my kitchen faucet for weekly deep cleaning - so easy. Now if I could only find a way to eliminate the smell long term...vinegar hasn't worked for me in the past.

I admire your dedication to your fur babies!
I have small dogs that sometimes have accidents in the house when I we are at work. I made them an indoor potty using a large waterproof pillow protector (it has has a sort of pile--it is not rubbery) and two bath towels folded and laid on top of it. This seems to absorb pee from a pug with no problem. If they poop on it I pick it up and shake the poop into the toilet. The who thing can be thrown in the washing machine. No smell.

It is nice to get a personal review about these products and I thank you for that. You might want to consider using a kitty box with flush-able kitty litter as the catch basin. A second basin for a once per day water rise mixed with Unique Pet Odor Remover (concentrate bottle available on Amazon) would be another suggestion. For the soft poop stains, spray Unique on the stain let it sit for few minutes before your once per day water-Unique rinse. The biggest problem with all of these products is the artificial turf - it needs to be the expensive '100% porous' type and I don't think any of these potty boxes come with that. Second big problem is the plastic tray under the turf. You are right about that - there aren't enough air holes and some urine will just sit there and never drain until you pour water. This could make the tray start to smell over time - hopefully the Unique would help with that too. Lastly, there are 3 gallon watering cans out there. Not as pretty, but certainly more efficient. AND I agree with others, you spoke too long before giving the critical information. You need to just edit a little more. Thanks again.

Thank you for posting this video, i really like that you were honest about the pros and cons. I am experiencing a hard time with my puppy, she is a service animal but my apartment complex has told me she isn't allowed to go potty on the grounds of the complex. Obviously she has been having accidents in the new apartment because she isn't used to using the wee wee pads or having to wait to go outside, she had her own yard. My boyfriend is getting frustrated because she has never gone potty in the house since we got her and she is now 18 weeks old and he doesn't want this to become a habit. Overall, i guess what i want to know is, is it worth spending $300 to get one of these porch potties? or is there a generic brand that cost less that works just the same? Any tips or advise would be great. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the review.Try a five gal bucket for carrying water less trips inside. Do you think quicklime would help with the smell? They use to sprinkle it in outhouses to kill the odor.I'd try a quicklime water solution to rise under the mat.If you pour it over the mat it will turn white as it would make a whitewash solution so I'd make a weak solution and pour under mat with one rise every other time. Also remember quicklime is caustic to breath and to your skin so wear rubber gloves and eye protection and dust mask.

I am not sure of the dimensions but you should have a look at a Harley Davidson dealership. They sell a low profile oil change catchment. I have one it will hold 7 or 8 litres of liquid. When you are ready to remove. Just screw the cap on. Grab the handle and take it to the bathroom. Remove a separate cap and it pours out nicely.

Thanks a lot for sharing a GREAT review - a great review is the one that gives you practicality of use as well as pros and cons.
I am considering this for my 9 week old Labrador puppy (who would grow upto 75-90 lbs as per the vet). Do you have an opinion about how much weight the plastic underneath the grass can hold ?
Also, you might be able to raise the porch potty using blocks of wood so that you can fit it a bigger container underneath. Reducing trips to bathroom & less hassle.

Don't consider the drainage hose is too narrow to work well and gets air bubbles that stops it up and you end up with a urine swamp on top of the grass.
    So, you have to deal with the basin. Things to try: Purchase pine kitty litter (or a more deodorizing type) and then dump it into an outdoor, closed trash can lined with a deodorizing plastic trash bag daily and follow through with water rinse both times and pour this water (tinged with pee) into the toilet. Spray the basin with Method, Lime scented spray cleaner and add new kitty litter;
Replace the synthetic grass with "K9 Grass" which is supposed to be a more plush, better draining and less absorptive type (or, the real sod as you are going to try will absorb odors); Put a pump spray top into a large bottle of hydrogen peroxide and spray the top and bottom of the synthetic grass daily-- It will degrade quickly into water and oxygen and not irritate your dogs.

Assuming you have a washer in your apt..my apt friend bought a 12ft hose, with a sprayer, that also closes the water hose. but you connect it to your washer connection, and use a hose instead of walking back and forth.....i use it too to bath my dogs in the tub.

If you have ever lived in a high rise with a dog that was raised in a home with a back yard and doggie door then you must realize that the challenges are numerous, especially as the dog ages and elevator wait times can vary greatly depending on the time of day and even the current building occupancy percentage. I see you have a cat in the profile picture so I doubt that you have had to show love and compassion for an aging and confused animal when, after waiting for the elevator that finally stops at your floor, you and your dog are usually getting the “ OMG if that dog even thinks about peeing on the elevator I will be the first person in the management office to insist that they put that dog to sleep So Help Me God” stare from all of the people in the elevator while you are trying desperately to channel your “ you are soooo close to the outside now ... you can make it sweet puppy 🐶 just try not let these people scare the urine out of you because I am pretty sure that lady on the 12th floor ate her own child to avoid the inconvenience of diapers “ and btw the stairwell isn’t an option as they are only accessible if the fire alarm goes off; so idk maybe you could reconsider your position on the subject? Probably not but I just thought I would paint an accurate picture of what a dog owner who goes to such trouble could possibly be up against. Or maybe you would prefer that if a life circumstance changes that the best thing to do is give the animals up for someone else to be responsible for? Kudos to all of the pet owners who take the responsibility seriously and are devoted to their dog(s) even when things get tough! If you have no pet then try telling your small children to hold it ?

Having had German Shepherds inside and in an outdoor run the smell is pretty intense if you don’t keep the pea gravel sanitized. I just got a lawn sprayer bottle put a small amount of bleach in it sprayed the run and presto urine Ofer is gone for about a week! Don’t use too much bleach it doesn’t take a lot and be sure to let the area dry and air out before letting the hounds or as in my case the Shepherds back in. On my potty patch a spray bottle with water bleach solution will do the trick, not much bleach is needed, let dry and air it out, before exposing dogs to chemicals. On the potty patch I am now going to use doggy potty pads underneath the turf so I can just throw it away and disinfect about once a week or as needed. Be sure to be careful with the bleach, I always water it down.

I have the same pros/cons you have except my dogs have not had any irregular bowels since I bought the porch potty 3 months ago. I also use the same cleaning routine because I have no other way to dispose of the urine either. Because you have that plastic layer underneath the turf I see no other way to clean it besides what I'm doing now. I tried the real grass and my dogs dug it up so that didn't work. Only 1 of my dogs uses the potty and the other will pee next to it. I laid an 8x8 piece of vinyl underneath so at least it's easy to clean up on the vinyl. It's actually much easier to clean and am thinking of just going that route and ditching the porch potty. There's also a cheaper odor elimination solution I bought from PetSmart that works really well. It comes with a battery operated power sprayer.

I have the porch putty and yes it is not that well designed! although it looks very nice.
They should improve it but what I have is workable.
Couple of improvements you can make:
1 - Place a plastic grill underneath the turf. They are used for basement lighting (2X4) and you find them at home Depot. You will need to cut to fit to size but it is not a big deal.
2 - Place a pan under the pan provided (at a cost) with the potty. The biggest issue with the design! the angle is not deep enough for the liquid to properly run to the central hole. try to find the same pans used for car oil dripping or under washers or similar as long as it fits in the potty.
Improvements that Porch Putty should make:
    - This automatic watering system is useless and they should think about the majority of balcony owners who do not have water running on their balconies.
    - Include the improvements above.
    - Improve the removal of the pan either via drawer system, or develop a system where the top can be moved easily.
    - They offer the option to have the top tied down. First they do not have the holes ready, secondly it is not practical
    As I said, workable...

Maybe it would be cheaper and better to just buy some bags of soil and put it in some kind of open container (with a similar size to this product). The soil would absorbe the pee so there will be no smell, at least for some time. After a month or two if it becomes to smell you just change the soil for a new one. (This is not expensive at all: check basic soil prices maybe in a gardening center) The only thing you would have to do daily is to take away the poo on it but this is not very dificult if you use a plastic bag. If they have diarrea you would just take away the poo including the little part of the soil which was affected. Good luck!!

hi thanks for your video. i am studying all this and planning on making my own. i am thinking of growing my own grass/soft groundcover using Coco Grow Mat 4'x8'x1/4" by Ecoiria that i found on amazon. it is a similar soil-less base for growing. i am hoping the dog will like the coco coir natural mat, and then the groundcover could grow and last longer than these ones that you buy the subscription for. and not be real stinky.

Can you use Natures Miracle on this product. THAT has been for me the only product that has worked for the smell. Also, what about rolling up the turf, throwing it in a laundry room wash basin or bath tub, dousing it with bleach and water and then hauling it back out on a as needed basis? And as for the turkey pan maybe finding a tupperware with a lid, place a hole in it, run short PVC connector from the drain straight to the hole in the tupperware (or even a shallow glass pyrex w/ lid). This way it eliminates having to deal with pouring of the pee except when you get to the toilet.

Thanks for the review! A suggestion I would make is that if you can at least buy a garden hose with a showerhead that can be connected under your kitchen sink and reach the terrace, you won't have to make so many trips back and forth with the watering can coz you'll just have running water to clean the grass with... Does seem like a lot of work. In my case I have a drain in the terrace AND a hose, so I wouldn't spend so much time cleaning... But I still don't have it...

Also you should try a sealed container with spout to catch and transport the urine to the toilet, try something like this automotive oil drain pan that has a seal-able lid for transporting without spilling. ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71b2Q9%2BF8QL._SL1500_.jpg

Upgrade to the irrigation. Get an automated electric mini-sump pump (It will fit under the box - HVAC style Google This: "VCMA-15UL, 65 GPH Automatic Condensate Removal Pump" its $36. - and tap into a waterline with electric (Battery powered) garden hose timer (Google this: "Ray Padula Irrigation Supplies. Electronic Hose Sprinkler Timer" and you will have automated cleaning with fresh water and drainage system. Viola!

Try natures miracle mixed in your water, it will help clean and get rid of the smell. A gallon size can be useful for about 2 months. I see you have two tweenies too! Mine are long hair black and tan and his daughter is a dapple,(mix colors) silver, black and tan. I live in nyc Manhattan, so I understand what you're going thru with the dogs. It seems you're going thru so much daily. We have the indoor/outdoor carpet on our terrace, and I used regular bleach and odor removal detergent about once a month and it cleans it completely removing the smell and stains. The number 2 is different, I usually scoop that up and flush it. I have a regular mop to scrub it down, then let it set, until all the bubbles are gone. After that I rinse it down again with Cold water and that's it, until the next month. I use two large buckets for the water and for the mix, I use one regular size to pour it outside. Not only does it clean the carpet, but the concrete too. It drains right out, so it's all done within 15 minutes or less. I let it dry up, but sometimes the two need to use it, and if I can't get downstairs fast enough, I'll let them go outside. It's safe and clean and they don't mind the wet. Just a bucket of cold water after they use it and the rest of the night is clear for drying. By morning all is ready for use. Oh I keep a puppy pad at the door for their wet paws. They like to wipe down and it absorbs on the pad and not on the floor. Good luck to you!

Sorry for all your hassles. I was just looking for reviews on a silicone pee pad holder for a cat that hates the litter box and was fascinated by this product. I use a concentrated disinfectant/deodorizer called OdoBan, which works well and is pretty cheap. I just get an empty spray bottle, put a few ounces in and fill with water, just spray whatever you want to sanitize--countertops, floors, etc. No rinsing is required. Speaking of rinsing, you can also add it to the rinse cycle for strong smelling laundry, so you could use it on washable pee pads. You can also spritz it in the air. It's $20 for a gallon of concentrate on Amazon (with free shipping) and less than $10 at Home Depot. You can buy it other places as well, those are the only two I have used. It comes in eucalyptus (which does not smell like that, but is kind of a fresh scent)-that's what I use, and lilac.

CZ Gator have you tried using the Odorban ON something like the artifical turf? I would very much like to try something like that but I don't want them to get turned off from using it by a chemical smell.

Wow, that’s pretty tough going. I’m sorry to see how much work that is. I’ve been in similar situations, where things just need to get a whole lot better. Weird question here; but have you a bit of extra space in your bathroom? Maybe you can rig up something similar that drains into your bathroom shower drain and can utilize sprinklers, too? Then you can also have the bathroom fan always on to filter out the odors. If you’re not handy, maybe you can save up some money and hire someone that can build you one that’s more adaptable to tight spaces. Who knows maybe you will be the one to invent one for High-rise living situations, like yourself. Good Luck, Sweetheart😊💕

Here' a solution for your problem. Buy a small high pressure cleaner to clean your synthetic grass. It will remove also the poo that stick to the grass and less water consumption. However, you must install a permanent hose (not as big as garden hose) connected from the nearest water source upto your pourch. Check for a sample of water hose for filtiration machine for drinking water station which they install a small hose but covered with electrical wire sleeves to make the hose invisible. You can have the same concept. And for your drainage
Install hose connected to the potty then your end hose will be to the rain drainage pipe. Make sure your hose is not level. It should make a slope. These will make your life easier and enjoy more on your dogs.

Wow. That's a lot of work, but thank-you for posting the entire process. Honestly, I can't see myself going through all this; I'd have to think really hard before committing to life with a dog in a high-rise apartment! If I had no choice, then I'd simply try and take my dog out for regular potty breaks; then again, my shih tzu can hold it forever, whereas I've heard weiner dogs are notoriously hard to potty-train.

Ever thought of putting on rubber gloves, getting a scrub brush and a pail of hot low suds soapy water? And you need to pressurize your rinse water no matter how you do it. Either a sink attachment or a cheap pressure washer. You would do less work in the long run and waste much less water. Watering cans are meant to prevent the water from washing away the 'dirt' from around your plants, not for rinsing stuff clean!

I know this is an old video but I see people are still commenting on it so I wanted to add, this seems far too complicated a routine and I don’t think it’s necessary. I rinse mine once a day, with a five-litre watering can, into PP’s own ‘indoor catch basin’ which I then empty into a bucket and carry to the toilet to flush away. I use machine-washable synthetic grass (washed with biological washing powder and a specially-designed disinfectant) and I swap in a clean one every 2-3 weeks, or weekly in hot weather, which is when I also give the rest of the setup a good wipe down and spritz with a cleaning spray.
Rinsing with 12 gallons of water 2-3 times a day is really excessive and I really can’t imagine most Porch Potty owners are doing this!

Idea's put some deodorizer cones under the pad to help the air under there. Maybe by some disinfectant and rinse it every so often if the doesn't bother the dogs. I can also think about maybe buying something as a third layer with a drying property? But that also seems annoying since you would have to replace it a lot. I have a fleece sheet I use in a cheap-O $20 fake grass potty, but it is mostly there to absorb the pee so I don't accidentally splash it around when I clean it. I would go about experimenting with chemical deodorizers if that doesn't freak you out or turn your dog's off. Just the stuff used in restaurants and medical facilities.

I don't have this set up, but a cheaper version and like you the smell is horrible! I'm in VA as well.
What I do is take a clean bucket of water and an empty bucket to the porch, I tilt the pan to drain the pee into the empty bucket and then rinse the turf and bottom of the turf with the water from the other bucket then take it inside to dump in the toilet. I am still trying to find a way to decrease the urine smell.

I took in a preggo stray. When she was pregnant she pooped in the grass outside and on a puppy pad if she couldn't hold it inside. Now that puppies were born (7 weeks) she pees and poops everywhere BUT the puppy pads, unless I put it in the right spot (can't even be a foot off) and even then if she has to pee AND poo she won't do both on the pad, just one. and outside she started peeing on the porch, under the porch on the concrete, and in the middle of the street when on a walk. Anyone have this issue? I'll probably invest in one of these.

Lay a trash bag over the container and add cat litter in the bag so that when the urine goes down the drain it will fall in to the bag with the cat litter. When going to clean just slide out the container with the bag, tie the bag up and throw it away all I one. I hope that makes sense. The cat litter will help with the smell depending on which you purchase.
