Mindblowing. And all the numbers from all the albums of LZ, like all the other greats of the 70s, were played every day on the radio - at least once - for years and years...never got sick of them and still in awe.
Led Zeppelin's self-described masterpiece. You're hearing the bass player John Paul Jones. And it is. In every way. Another thing: My Dad (now passed) was born in 1931. And he was a huge Zeppelin fan. Now, this wasn't normal. People that old didn't listen to this stuff. But he did.
That's interesting. Was he into the lyrics? Lots of early 70's (and late 60's) music were for or against or about war of some sort. Pink Floyd's early stuff was.
Led Zeppelin were just four of the greatest musicians who never used session musicians. John Paul Jones played bass melotron mandolin and numerous other instruments. Their brilliance is shown by how their live performances matched their studio work in terms of sound. Live they were just awesome.
What you are hearing is Jimmy Page on guitar and John Paul Jones is playing bass and keyboards while an orchestra provides the strings and brass. When they played it live, John Paul Jones would stand in for the orchestra. He would play the string and brass parts on two separate keyboards and the bass with his feet on the pedals. And yes, it did sound unlike anything we had heard before when it came out in early 1975. It was unexpected. Live, it was absolutely epic. Bonham's drums echoed off the walls and shook the building. They projected clouds on the screen behind them and you felt like you had walked through a desert with them by the time it was over. Completely exhausting and mind shattering.
I never saw Zep live but I did see Robert Plant back in the 90s. My late husband camped out to get tickets. The best seats ever! We we so close we could literally see his face!
This song is similar in music style to iconic groups like Procol Harem(Whiter Shade of Pale) etc. Moody Blues (Nights in White Satin) etc. from that era of the late ’60s and ’70s. They began experimenting using orchestral music in recordings and live orchestral music at concerts! It is a Great blend of Rock and Classic music!🙏🙏
John Paul Jones is the secret weapon of the band. Such talent individually but JPJ needs his flowers. Since I've been loving you is great too. Great reaction as usual my friends and Peace out ✌️ 🙏 ☮️
Jimmy Page, who by the way looks a lot like his mother, probably doesn't have Asian roots. He was very interested in occultism and gave his bandmates a book with symbols from this area. Everyone was supposed to choose a symbol that should be shown on the cover of their 4th album. Robert Plant chose the feather, John Bonham the three rings and the third symbol was chosen by John Paul Jones. Jimmy's symbol looks like Zoso. The album was nameless, but fans called it four symbols. Kashmir was created on a desert trip through Morocco and therefore has oriental notes in the organ tones. Robert loves Arabic music and has numerous echoes in his solo albums.
JPJ is playing a mellotron, he’s playing the organ, that has prerecorded tape that the keys make the sounds. I do believe an orchestra did play the instruments, & John Paul Jones recorded them. This song is the one the band is most proud of, & the timings were harder to accomplish. The lyrics were written by Plant before the music was completed, it took a couple years to get it just right. It’s about Plant & Page driving through the Sahara Desert on their way to a music festival, the drive seemed endless & the landscape was all the same yet beautiful. I suggest doing the Live at Knebworth (1979) & live Celebration Day (2007), with John Bonham’s son Jason Playing the drums.
The first symbol on the left represents Jimmy Page. It appeared in many books of the occult from as far back as the 16th century. Page may have found it in "Le Veritable Dragon Rouge" published in 1850. It variously represented his astrological sign of Capricorn as well as the planet Saturn, and the metal Lead. Alternate versions of it also represented Thor's Hammer. The second symbol is Jones' and came from Rudolf Koch's "Book of Signs" and represented a person both confident and capable. The third symbol came from the same book and was chosen by Bonham because "he liked it." It's been known to represent everything from the Holy Trinity to the German arms manufacturer Kruup's company logo. The last symbol is Plant's and came from James Churchward's book "The Sacred Symbols of Mu" and represented truth.
At Jimmy Page’s instigation, each band member picked a symbol to represent themselves. It added to the mystique of the band. (prince, anyone?) the most complex one is Jimmy’s…and no, he will not divulge the meaningful of it to this day. Pronounced Xoso. The circle with the feather is Robert’s ……He wrote the lyrics so the feather represents a quill pen. The three circles was Bonham’s and was on his drum kit. The last was JPJ’s. You can look up the meanings if you’re interested.
What do you mean this song came out 50 years ago? I'm not that old!... Oh wait... 😔 I have a silver ring with 2 dragons on either side of John Paul Jones's symbol (circle over three interlocking ovals) Explained in Rudolf's Koch's "the book of signs" which says the sign was used to exorcise evil spirits and represent the holy trinity by Christians in the ancient times up to the middle age, but it also can be found used by the Celts with the same purpose of protection and to represent three stations of the year (for the Celts was just three) Epic song! Timeless song! 🎧 💓 🎶
As soon as the internet was a thing I searched to find Page’s ethnicity, I couldn’t find anything that said that he was Asian, not that it matters but I always thought that he might be.
The symbols are white magic symbols. Jimmy Page was heavily into the occult and an avid follower of Aleister Crowley, so much so, that he purchased Crowley's mansion.
@Markyajv why do you say that. I have a twin brother. Zeppelin has been my Band since my older brother came back from Vietnam and gave me my first Zeppelin album at age 12. Love Watching these reactions.
If this is not playlist worthy, nothing is.
Agreed

One of the dopest songs ever

Age is just a number. Once a Zeppelin fan always a Zeppelin fan. I'm 66 & listen to them until my dying day. 😂😂
That's interesting. Was he into the lyrics? Lots of early 70's (and late 60's) music were for or against or about war of some sort. Pink Floyd's early stuff was.
This song was mind blowing. My mind is still mind blown. I'm 66 & a Zeppelin fan since I'm 12 years old. Saw them 5 times.Lucky me😊✌️🌻🌻
Indeed!
5 TIMES??? WOW

The live version from Celebration Day is terrific also! Worth a listen. Jimmy Page was the master of great guitar riffs!
Thank you for reacting to this song! It's Led Zeppelin at their finest 🎵

I never saw Zep live but I did see Robert Plant back in the 90s. My late husband camped out to get tickets. The best seats ever! We we so close we could literally see his face!
Not futuristic in the 70's, just perfect rock and roll
PLEASE !!! IN MY TIME OF DYING !!
The live version of May 25,1975 at Earls Court is the best date of a live.
Saw this song live before I ever heard it on a LP. Great concert.
The Mighty Zep!
It was mind blowing!

The symbols, I believe we're each picked by each band member....left to right, Page, Jones, Bonzo, Plant.
I have their whole collection, Bron Yaur Stomp is fantastic
John Paul Jones is the man!!
YOU need to see this live! Check this out live at Knebworth 1979!

I'm at best a casual Zeppelin fan but this is my number one track by them

Whole Lotta Love is a great one of their most popular songs
So good!!!

🌸 so, JPJ (John Paul Jones) did the bass and the keyboard base and all of the unusual background
Of course more Zep!!
Yes it sounded other worldly…. Ear orgasmic sound! Awesome to dance to, at least I always do!

Have you guys tried Deep Purple " Child in Time". ? If not, worth doing it.
John Paul Jones keyboard and bass guitar
