Its not the sock's fault. He is burning too much kerosene, relative to the amount of air. That black stuff is Carbon, or soot. The other chemical made from incomplete combustion is Carbon monoxide (poisonous gas) If it were ideal and burning cleanly, he would be making Carbon Dioxide and Water. But the sock isn't ideal...
