衛仲達初為館職。被攝入冥司，有官員命呈上善惡錄。等到來，見惡錄滿庭，善錄僅如筷子大小。冥官色變，命人取秤來，小軸善錄仍能壓起惡錄。官和善的說：＂閣下可以出去了！＂仲達說：＂我年未滿四十，怎會過惡如此多？＂冥官回答：＂不是這樣。只要一念不正立刻會被記錄下來，不等惡行。 ＂於是他又問：＂那麼小軸中所記載的是什麼？ ＂冥官答說：＂朝廷曾大興工役，修三山石橋，閣下上疏建議停止；這就是諫稿。仲達說：＂我雖說過，但朝廷不同意，有什麼用處，能有這般神力呢？＂冥官說：＂朝廷雖然沒聽，但也算閣下的善行。不聽已經如此。若是聽了，那麼善力何止如此？可惜的是你生的惡念太多，所以善的力量，因此減少了一半，而你的官位，本來可升至宰相，現在也就沒有指望升到宰相了。」衛仲達後來只官拜吏部尚書。
此君若由此更加行善，成就怎可估量；若從此為惡，又怎能到吏部尚書？善惡之報，節節增減，沒有定局啊，讀者應該這樣想。(德育古鑑白話)

衛仲達初為館職，被攝至冥司，官命具呈善惡二錄。比至，則惡錄盈庭，善錄僅如箸小。官色變，索秤稱之，則小軸乃能壓起惡錄。官善曰：「君可出矣！」仲達曰：「某年未四十，安得過惡如是之多？」官曰：「不然。但一念不正，此即書之，不待其犯也。」曰：「然則小軸中所書何事？」曰：「朝廷嘗大興工役，修三山石橋，君上疏諫止之；此諫稿也。」曰：「某雖言之，朝廷不從，於事何益，而能有如是之力？」官曰：「朝廷雖不從，然念之在君者已是。向使聽從，則君善力何止如是，將乘此而獲度世矣，尚得而攝君乎？奈惡念過多，力已減半，不可複望大拜。」後果止於吏部尚書。
此君使由此而更行善焉，成就又何可量；若由此而一為惡焉，吏部尚書其複可得乎？善惡之報，節節增減，當無一定之局也。閱者須作如是觀。(德育古鑑-存心類)
