It's so easy ....that is to say, this is the best performace of Scherza Infinda I've ever listen to ....Ann Hellenberg passion is so intensive that I'm able to feel this painful scream ... and my soul is sad like her main rol .... Amazing!
@Nancy Lee no, it was written for the castrati who had Mezzo-Soprano voices! Since we don't castrate boys anymore, this aria is sung either by a Countertenor or a Mezzo-Soprano
Absolut SCB, I respect your viewpoint but disagree with it. That said, the lady is vocally and dramatically appealing in her portrayal, though, for me, not completely convincing; I don't quite believe her reading of the text. Take both a look at and listen to Sarah Connolly's rendition, which I feel is far superior in interpretive depth. However, I think even she is surpassed in conveying the raw emotion of the piece by the French Countertenor Phillipe Jaraousski... He totally inhabits the role, demonstrated in phrasing, tone colour and facial expression. It's altogether mighty powerful. As one of the critics said, "He generates more electricity than the Hoover Dam". Quite so. Go compare for yourself.
@ AbsolutSCB Absolutely right , AbsolutSCB ! This is just a beautiful peformance ; I like to just listen & enjoy .. sadly there are always some people who can't see the wood , because theyre lost looking for the tree's 🙂
Thanks for posting. It is the best rendition of this wonderful aria and I have ever heard. To me Ann Hallenberg is the best and most lovely singer around at the moment.
I just heard her in this role at the Drottningholm Court Theatre outside Stockholm. It was pure magic, the entire performance an experience to cherish. What deep and sincere music Handel created here, incredible!
Truly magnificent. This is why we do not kill. A diamond in the Temple of the Most High. Thank you for letting this light shine. Trembling and rivers of life flowing.....
Just as there are many approaches to embellishment, so are there many approaches to embellishing an aria. Hallenberg's approach is doubtless ornate. But that doesn't make it wrong. Consider the violin obbligato in "Wann kommst du mein Heil," the first duet in Bach's Cantata 140. Compared to the vocal line, it is quite ornate. But it works. Hallenberg's ornaments, in my opinion, help describe Ariodante's complex emotional state. You hear sadness and regret. But you also hear love.
This dacapo is based on ornaments written by William Savage. He is known to have been a Bass-singer for Handel, but at the time of the performance of Ariodante he was still a boy-sopran. So there are 2 posibilities: These are Carestini's ornaments, heard and written down by him, or Savage wrote them for himself, and he sang this aria (in private) himself while he was still a soprano.
Do I still live? And without a sword, O gods! what shall I do? What do you say, o my troubles? Enjoy yourself, o faithless one, in the arms of your lover. Betrayed by you, I will now give myself up to death's embrace. But, in order to break this shameful tie, a sad and bereaved spirit, I will return to punish you.
There are too many people on RUclips who are wannabe music critics I think... Or perhaps wannabe poets? I'm personally not sure if I'm sold on the heavily ornamented da capo or the rather laboursome tempo, but that's not the same thing as saying that I dislike it, which would not be true anyway.
e niente recitativo, che brutta prassi esecutiva, per il resto mi piace, ma quel benedetto recitativo fa' immergere nel pathos di questa aria tutto un'altro modo!
Superb! Ann Hallenberg is an exceptional mezzo-soprano - just love listening to her sing! 👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👏
Exceptional. I love this dark, rich tone, and the aria itself is beyond exquisite.

What a perfect performance - Thank you.
I think this is the most perfect version, Ann Hallenberg has the rounded warmth most mezzos don't have. Lovely!

Do I still live?
And without a sword,
O gods! what shall I do?
What do you say, o my troubles?
Enjoy yourself, o faithless one, in the arms of your lover.
Betrayed by you,

a sad and bereaved spirit,

Iwould like to listen Cecilia Bartoli in a good recording.... anyone ....?

Perhaps maybe you should just liste n.. and stop worrying about the perfection of technicalities. & your profound insights !

C'est certes fort bien chanté, mais ce n'est pas une partition de Mozart.
No, it is Händel, the greatest composer of vocal and choral music of all time, and Ann Hallenberg makes it perfect.
What a perfect performance - Thank you.
sublime
