    So good to hear someone else go gaga over a Steinhart. I sold all my Rolex watches when their prices got just plain stupid and replaced them with Steinharts - and never looked back or regretted that for a moment. AMAZING watches...and not just "for the price." They'd be amazing watches at two or three times the price.

  • @RobertBlanchard
    @RobertBlanchard  4 года назад +4

    For those that have asked... 10 days timing against Casio DW5610-1 (resets every night to atomic clock) at 00 Casio the Steinhart is at +25 sec so running +2.5 seconds a day worn 90% of the time including sleeping with the watch. Time not worn when on my workout run and once for 2 hours working outside building.

    Just picked this up today. Loving it. Love the mixture of modern and vintage vibes on it... The size is just right. Bought the 42mm model 2 years ago, been wearing that often. But I guess I'm selling it away now after getting this ceramic "vintage" 39mm model which to me is somewhat of an upgrade over the 42mm non ceramic model.

    Have this watch and find it hard to beat this value proposition. The ETA is running +2 consistently and as you know it's really well built and substantial. It really ruins buying other watches as the price to performance just isn't there as with this Steinhart. The other I have that's also a keeper is the 500 39 GMT Batman version. Amazing watches and really don't know how they do it. Thanks for the video!

      I have been slowly reducing my collection and this watch is one I am keeping... I know people don't like the faux patina but in this watch its more of design choice that a 'faux' choice. and what makes it so is that the bezel Lum (which is awesome!) is the same color as the dial Lum. If the bezel was white and the dial was faux it would have ruined it for me. But no... perfectly executed. (I am also a sucker for no crown guards which sets this watch apart from all the others.) One last comment... I destroyed this watch, riding my mountain bike. And I love this watch so much I patiently waited for a new case/bezel/insert from Steinhart so I could rebuild it. And now its back! I will be taking a business trip to Costa Rica and guess what watch I will be taking ;-)

    Just received this amazing time piece. I was super excited to receive it. And when I did.... I didn’t fall in love with it. 😭 it is truly beautiful but for me the 39mm is just too small. It happens...the same thing happened to me with the Explorer dial sub 39mm... had it wore it and just didn't make a connection with it. And I will be selling it. On the other hand though I recently bought a Seiko Turtle SRP777 and it struck me like lighting! I have never felt a connection to a watch like I have with this one... still cant explain it.And cant wear anything else now! I just fell in love with it! Funny how this watch hobby works. Good luck on the sale... maybe you can contact Gnomon and do a trade for the 42mm version of a similar design.

But do I really need another watch??? Does anybody? Honestly, this one would make a perfect "one watch collection"

  • @MisterMaster4life
    @MisterMaster4life 2 года назад +1

    Thanks for sharing. Had soooo many Steinharts, there's actually nothing to complain about, they're dirt cheap for the quality you're getting! Super nice watches. Already owned 8. 4 gmt's all 42mm, 3 ocean one's (42mm black aluminium, 39mm black ceramic and green 39mm) and the Ovm 42mm. However I always end up selling them. They never satisfy me for too long. But after I sold them I always go look for a new one...believe it or not. Already had 4 Gmt's 42mm....1 Pepsi and 3 cokes...it's insane. Always sell them...regret it...buy them back...left unsatisfied.
    Probably because no matter how nice they are, lets be honest, they're still just a ripp-off, so I sell them again. Not hating because I do think the brand is awesome. Then I miss them again, buy a new one again....and the wheels of the bus go round and round.
    Never ending story....
    I love them, I hate them, I love them....
    Here I am again...gmt number 5.

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  2 года назад +1

      Well, this one (at least for me) is a different story. I have had, on many occasions, watch people ask me what I’m wearing… they just can’t pin point it.
      Even had a guy wearing his GMT Rolex wonder what I was wearing.
      I believe it is because it’s a homage of a watch design that was retired 60 years ago!
      And that’s why it works… so I have set a rule for myself when it comes to homage type of watches:
      1. Has to have been out of production for over 30 years
      2. Has to be a rare model
      3. Has to be cost prohibitive to purchase the original model
      If it meets the criteria like the Oceans 39 Vintage GMT… then I buy it.
      Still have it and I don’t see it leaving my collection… it really scratches that 6542 itch… so much so that I even keep the GMT slaved to to hour hand.
      If I have a complaint it’s just one… the bezel action… it’s the 120 click when it should be the 24 or 48… at this price they should have taken that extra step.
      Enjoy your 5th GMT… I have a suspicion you’ll feel different about this one.

      This is why I stick to the discontinued Steinhart homages. Just sold my 39mm GMT as it looks like the current Rolex GMT from a distance. Replaced it with the Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer as it is based on a far gone Rolex Model. Also what I like about buying certain Steinhart's is that I always manage to sell them for a profit or at least get 95% of my initial spend back.

    Bought this one about 10 days ago on Steinhart's Jubilee bracelet and I still can't take my eyes off the watch. It's friggin gorgeous and (IMO) offers just the right combination of ruggedness, style and elegance.
    One thing I will say (and it kinda shows in this video, but not in all videos I've seen): The "vintage" effect on the dial is pretty noticeable under certain lighting conditions and viewing angles and makes the dial look pretty different from what you see in most pics of the watch. Not saying this is good or bad (I kinda like the added variety), just pointing out that it's a thing. Oh, and yes: If you need even the weakest of reading glasses to decipher small-ish text, the date complication will be useless to you. It's really tiny.

    Beautiful watch. Thanks for making a video so we could see. I’ve been eyeing this watch, but I can’t come to buy it just yet because I’m just not a fan of faux-patina

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks.. really enjoying this watch. Understand about the faux-patina, but with this one (especially) since the lum patina is so well done and matching perfectly with the bezel lum along with the 'faded' (for lack of a better word because they got the colors just right) bezel blue and red color... all put together just works. They did a fantastic job. For comparison take the Oceans 39 military... I love the style but that bezel and the dial just don't look right together.

    • @horologyproject
      @horologyproject 5 лет назад +1

      Robert Blanchard even well done I think faux patina is a trend that will eventually die. I think it’s similar to buying ripped jeans for me... just seems silly. Nonetheless, I’m glad to know it’s well done. I’m addicted to watches enough to buy it anyways. Wear it in good health!

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  5 лет назад

      Horology Project I can see that trend going by the way side as well... and not saying this cause I spent money on this watch... but after 8 days (last three on the jubilee) I will have to say that the cream lum has taken a life of its own... it... how do I put this... it feels that if old watches didn’t have a patina this watch was designed to look like this to be different... to have a softer more sophisticated feel about it.
      I say this because all Pepsi bezel GMT’s that I have seen/wore have that ‘look at me’ feel about them... they can be a bit loud... this watch has toned that feel down... it’s ‘grown up’ if you will.
      All that said. The lum looks much better in person (not so yellow like in my video) but indoor with not so great lighting it shows its cream a bit more. And in semi lit it goes back to looking just right.

      Still have it, but I’m going to sell it since I bought the Lorier Hyperion. The Steinhart is a great watch but once the Lorier came out it started looking much more ‘homage’ than it originally seemed to me. But next to the Lorier it really stands out… so I’m going to keep the Lorier since it’s much more of an original design. Only issue I have with the Lorier is that it’s not a real GMT, and with the new eta true gmt I’m excited to see what’s coming.

    • @MountainSalsa
      @MountainSalsa 2 года назад +1

      @@RobertBlanchard Thanks for the response! I not all too familiar with the Lorier brand. Since you mentioned them I decided to check them out. They really do have a nice original design with the Hyperion. I was leaning towards the Steinhart but might end up with the Lorier!

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  2 года назад

      @@MountainSalsa I’ve met Lorenzo & Lauren at wind up back in 2019… they are a fantastic couple with a true passion for watch making.
      One of the other main reasons I’m sticking to the Hyperion is the way it wares on the wrist.. it just hugs, almost like it belongs on the wrist! It’s my official travel watch now (along with my Casio Gshock for when I know I might be doing things that might really bang up a watch) another thing is the bracelet… the way it’s cut it just dances with the light… love looking at it as well.
      Issues… so people have had issues with the bezel being to tight others to loose (mine was to loose but not enough to really complain.
      Oh another thing… Lorier has a proper 48 clicks to the bezel and is by directional. Steinhart is one direction and 120 click (which is not correct for a GMT)
      Hope this helps! And good luck!

      Yes sir... you see I had my 67 sea master which I love but didn’t really wear since... well you know, vintage. Then I heard that you could buy the 69 screw down crown case and it was game on! I started by finding the case... if I recall I paid 600ish for it. So now I had a case. Time to find the movement dial and hands. The hands where easy to find and I looked everywhere for a year or so go a no date dial... ended up getting the date dial. Lastly was the movement (I already had a bracelet) here it was a bit tricky since I was looking for 1969 build year. That took some time but finally found the correct serial number and once bought I sent it to my watch guy to service. A few months later I received my perfect movement and I built the watch in under an hour. Then I put it on and I wore it straight for almost 2 decades with the occasional switch between my dress watches and my Apollo 17 Speedy when I flew or raced.
      But now I have kinda retired it to beach/pool duty. No more diving with it.

    will be a regular GMT 39 with a ceramic bezel ?

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, ceramic bezel. GMT function is 24 hand quick set (not hour hand quick set) Some people call is the office GMT where one uses the GMT hand to see other times around the world... say you live in NY and trade, so you need to know time in Tokyo... When home I have it set to London time... when I travel I set the 24 hour hand to home time and use it two ways, 1st like the original Rolex GMT (1954 to 1983) where the 24 hour hand follows the hour hand (no quick set) and I see second timezone (where I land) by rotating the bezel and 2nd (which I use the most when traveling) Start with 24 hour hand and hour hand set home time. When I arrive I rotate bezel where the 00 triangle is aligned with the 24 hour hand. Then I adjust all hands to local time, then I quick set the 24 hour hand to where the 00 marker is then I rotate the bezel back to resting position 00/12. Now, I have at a glance, local time and time at home.

And the build quality (compared to other high end jubilee of the past is top notch) to me it’s worth the price of admission...

      Back in the early 2000s you could buy NOS cases. I had bought mine from Ofrei.
      I had an old 69 Seamaster in which I used for the movement. Bought hands and a dial and quickly assembled a 69 (case was screwdown) Seamaster 300. Wasn’t into recording at the time so no video exists.
      Wore this watch for almost 2 decades. Still have it. Going to restore her and pass it down to my son.

      @@RobertBlanchard that model is awesome I just seen it on Chrono24 for like 10k. The dial the bezel the bracelet is so perfect vintage! I always wanted to lean how to make my own or assemble a seiko sub mod or something. Very nice boss. I’m jealous !

      @@jimsteen911 it’s not as difficult as it looks… go to namoki (it’s a parts store) and there they have kits to assemble. It’s inexpensive and when you are finished you will have a watch you will be proud to own and show off!

      Also be careful with original Seamaster 300s a bunch of fakes and Frankensteins out there. 10k is way to high for this model unless it’s mint and documented. I do have an original 65. But it has a dial and bezel replaced in the 90’s so it lost a lot of value because of that.

      @@RobertBlanchard yes I know thanks. Yea I been been looking for my first Lux watch for a year. I have the money it’s just doing all the research and battling weather I want to do pre owned and take a risk or get new and pay the piper. I’ve been following some really reputable dealers in the UK. And it’s just a matter of the right model popping up for the right price. I’m torn between a seamaster and a seamaster planet ocean. I’ve been looking at tags but I think when omega start holding back inventory next year the price will go up bigtime eventually. As opposed to a tag and run the risk of the clones. Decisions decisions. I live in nj and there aren’t a lot of dealers here I got to go up north to try stuff on. I’ve never even seen or worn these watches in person. So kinda hard to decide what I want based on photos.

    BUYER BEWARE: I own this watch and I have one big gripe with it. The red portion of the bezel absolutely do not look as crisp in real life as it does on picture or film. If anything, the color is more pinkish than red with the numbers within it also being very dull and rather hard to discern. For this reason the watch is a disappointment to me. I wrote this in a review to Gnomon Watches, where I bought the watch and subsequently pointed it out to Steinhart as well. So far though, a couple of weeks later, Gnomon has not posted the review and neither Gnomon nor Steinhart has responded to me.

    • @tiltedrealizations8610

      I've concluded that this watch simply "suffers" from being too photochenique with the camera picking up details and colors that the naked eye will miss, thus setting you up for a disappointment if you buy the watch based only on what the pictures and video will show you. I have since paired the watch with a high quality, chocolate brown, distressed leather strap, which helps bringing the bezel forward, making the whole ensemble look MUCH, MUCH better. Only problem I have now, I set out to buy a homage diver, which I feel I haven't accomplished. So when I do buy one within the next several months, it too will probably be a Steinhart, as I have researched this corner of the market extensively and I just can't find another place with a better bang for the buck.

      Isn’t that pink colour deliberate though? It’s supposed to give it an aged sun bleached appearance surely?
