    Great video. Love your attitude. Out in the real woods, bushcraft, woodsmanship, should be about one person coming to the aid of another, not competing. I do think newcomers should either be good enough to stay safe, or wise enough to go out with someone who does know enough. That's coming to the aid of others, too, or so I believe. Go out with newcomers, and help show them how to stay safe. I hate to say it, but I didn't know the drought was still in full swing. And I have family and friends down there. I credit not knowing with it being election year. I'm usually a news junkie, but this year I've avoided news. I even stopped watching TV. I'll pray it ends soon. I love my coffee, and I often drink two or three pots per day, doctor's orders be hanged. I drank it black for forty-six years or so, and then, about four or five years ago, I discovered coconut creamer, and now that's the only way I drink it at home. I still drink it black at restaurants and in the woods, but only because I can't get my coconut creamer there. I was taught to let coffee perk for two minutes, and then to get it off the fire. Works well for me. Anyway, yes, bushcraft should be fun, not a competition. I don't think I am a bushjcrafter. I'm a woodsman, and I don't worry about the latest this or that, which knife I should or shouldn't use, which knot is best, etc. I grew up in the woods, and I just love being out there. If I'm not actively hunting, trapping, fishing, or doing anything else that makes me move around and be active, I love just sitting down under a tree, building a tiny fire, and relaxing. I can spends days, weeks, just sitting and thinking, drinking coffee, enjoying the sights and sounds of the woods, and I can sleep under a tree with the best of them. I know how to survive in the woods. I know how to live in the woods, and I have known since I was a kid, so I don't worry about every little thing this expert or that expert says. Most have never actually lived in the wild. And no one needs much of what is taught under the name of survival. Much of it is nonsense, anyway. Most people have enough skill and common sense to do an excellent job, with just a bit of aid from someone who knows what to do, and who doesn't keep telling them they have to have this, buy that, do the other. You don't need the latest knife, the latest backpack, the perfect tent, and you don't have to know how to tie every knot in existence. Knowledge helps, but actually surviving, and especially living, in the wild, is far more about attitude and common sense than about trying to do every little thing some expert says. I've met a lot of people who know several times as much about the wild as I do, but who could last two weeks in the wild, and could never live there fulltime. They've tried, but they think of it as an ordeal, and their own mind punishes them. They make it a battle, long for it to end, suffer when it doesn't, and you can't live long term in the wild that way. You have to accept it for what it is, and you have to enjoy it, or you won't last. This largely applies to short term survival, as well. For something like bugout, or surviving a bad situation that goes on for weeks, and most certainly for living there long-term, you can't be afraid, you can't destroy your body and mind by making it a battle, by hating it, by losing your mind wanting it to end. Anyway, great video. You always have something to say worth listening to, and you say it in a most enjoyable way. And, wow, I rambled even longer than usual. I'll shut up now.

    You are the real deal mister. I can see in this old vid that the drought really bummed you out. Shows you care for nature that surrounds you. Also shows the quality type person you are for caring about the animals and their habitat, and it also shows that you know how to keep things in perspective. I mean, enjoying nature, playing in nature, no rules, just try it, improve it, or not, doesn't matter. I don't listen to the self proclaimed so called survival experts, most of them are keyboard warrior hacks and wanna be's who never actually experienced a real survival situation to begin with and Its highly unlikely that any of us will ever experience a real life survival experience as well. Great Vid once again.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks! Yes, I truly care for nature and the woods. Once they are all chopped down and paved over, We are screwed. I hear ya on the survival experts thing. Some of these folks have read books , watched TV then started RUclips channels. Its so obvious to me its sickening. That why I try to avoid the words survival on here and stick to bushcraft and camping.

    I for one appreciate your video's.
    There not pretentious, you not selling me anything, but above all you are honest in your presentation.
    The drought is affecting all of the East...this is a sign and a warning of what is happening...
    We that love the Wilderness, i.e. Bushcraft are stewards of our Wilderness.
    If anything we see the signs of the fragility of our Wilderness.
    Frankly we are loosing it, including our Wildlife...If we are not careful!!!
    I don't mean to be so down trodden in my conversation here.
    But thanks to folks like you, others we know and myself we have a duty and obligation to share what we know and preserve and protect our Wilderness so we may practice our Bushcraft in the perfect solitude of our Wilderness space.
    I look to your Video's and thank you for your work and joy!

    "Just think of it as spending time with your sugared up pyscho military surplus clad brother Dave..." ahahaha Another fun video brother... Was a little rough watching you try to contain your concern over the drought / creek / missing wildlife... That coffee of yours looked rich enough you could drink it black the rest of the week... LOL Thanks for the few minutes of comic relief... We are in the middle of wrapping things up for Fall here on the homestead and its been incredibly busy... (Now... From the Homesteader to the Bushcrafter - You can slow cook / low heat the condensed sweetened milk down to caramel - something you and Nick might enjoy when you're out together next...) Wishing ya Peace brother... Mark @ BBJ

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  8 лет назад

      LOL! Good description Mark! Man the drought has really got me depressed. I actually cook a lot of meals outdoors over a camp fire. Even at home. I'll remember that with the on the trail caramel. Take care and Thanks for watching Brother Mark!

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction 8 лет назад

      Brother, I feel ya on the drought... I caught myself watching the creek bed while you talked hoping to catch something... If it eases your mind any, once the water returns, water birds will carry fish eggs (sticky) in on their feet and repopulate the creek... It takes time, but nature is efficient like that... The frogs and turtles will burrow, and snakes travel pretty efficiently... Still, populations will take time to return... // Get ya 2 or 3 cans of that sweetened condensed milk and play around with it (heat wise) at home before ya do it on the trail, but it does work... You will see some vids of people heating it without unsealing the can - DO NOT do this... It works fine without risking your life... LOL // And if you are suffering from bonfire / camping / fishing withdrawl - I am still down for that SMKW trip - and there is plenty enough room to camp here (7.25 acres) or the folks place (20 min away - 19.5 acres) if ya wanna make a weekend of it... Just say the word, 'cause I hate see'n that look on anyone's face... // As always, wish'n ya Peace brother... Mark

      Just FYI and not trying to be a 'know it all' but the stuff we buy as brown sugar is not the same as turbinado sugar (which is also brown.) Turbinado sugar is usually unprocessed while commercial brown sugar is usually processed. In fact, most commercial brown sugar is nothing more than processed white sugar with molasses (which is a by-product of producing processed sugar) added to it to give the distinctive flavor. The only reason I learned that is I used to work with a guy who was a vegan and he wouldn't eat white sugar because it is often processed with animal bone char and when I asked about brown sugar he told me the info I mentioned, above. I looked it up myself and found that he was right. It doesn't bother me and I still eat white (and brown) sugar although these days I mostly try to stick with Splenda.

    Inside this video, in a nutshell, is why we all LOVE to try our hand at BUSHCRAFT. The introduction from 2016 mirrors what we are finding in The Great Smokey Mountain Region of Virginia in Autumn, 2017: dry...dry...dry conditions. Many of us 'Bush Crafters' rely on the thought that we can load up a Subaru or better with our family and our gear and we can 'sit out' some natural disaster using skills familiar to our forefathers. If we got to 'that' creek, just like Dave, and even the deeper pools were gone, WOW: I don't have a back-up plan. Do you?

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  6 лет назад +1

      Well said and nope, no back up plan if the creeks are dry. Ill just have to keep going and look for a natural spring. Those never dry up as far as I know.

    Hello David,
    Thanks for the update about the 2016 drought where you live.
    I had no idea this occurred.
    Here in SW Virginia, we have had drought conditions this summer[2021], drying up some of the creeks, however, we were fortunate to get some of the rain from Hurricane Fred.
    Whew!
    I love hurricane rain, since it is usually a long-lasting gentle rain, which really soaks in deep.
    How are conditions now, where you live & wander?

    • @Reallybigmonkey1

      Hello Steven! 2016 was rough but that was the last major drought I can remember. Every year has been ok and this current summer is absolutely the wettest I can remember. Without the obvious, in your own way, in describing Bushcraft, you placed, what's called an Easter Egg...in your video!... Whatever someone's ability, skills, wants and needs...no-matter what! You, Yes you...go into the woods to do a video, and/or....I am sure just to BE THERE!!! That's Bushcraft!!!! You do it for yourself and your wonderful video photographer...your Son! But, I watched you build, and shoot a video in ungodly heat...to complication!!!!!!!! That's BUSHCRAFT!!!! I have 5 various friends that love to bushcraft with me...if the weather works for them.😊. I'll go out on my limited days off, just to be in the woods! They, won't! It's to cold! It"s to hot!, It's raining outside????? Just saying here. I cherish every moment I shared with my pop, in the wilderness...like you do with your son! But you prove....that a true Bushcrafter is in the woods under nice to extreme conditions.... and loves being there!!! In that lies your Easter Egg.... called Knowledge!!! Thanks Buddy!!! John.

    DIY JUNKIE HERE. that shinny metal stuff, ya mean, LUMDEGUM? LOL In the machine trades, we are ask to use many "different" types of metals. Unobtanium and oposite would be menurium or crapaloy! Like me, I am sure you have used them lots! Especially the made in chiwanistan specialty metals like internally laminated shafting! After working in a machine/ fab shop, when ya get home, the last thing you feel up to is more noise! It took my wife a long time to understand why I didn't feel up to going to noisy places in the evening! I used to use maple syrup in my coffee, gives it a different taste. Did you invent that tri pod device? Super easy to program up on a mill power or similar mill and cut out of that light wt shinny metal! LOL

    Welcome to the high desert and mountains of Colorado. We call that Red Flag Warning conditions. We can't even have open fires in the back yard without special permission (which you can't get) from the fire department. You can't even use an open flame without it being in a forest service fire pit. We couldn't shoot off fire works or our black powder cannons on Independence day because the cannons used flint lock ignition. We changed the ignition to shotgun primer on the cannon. At least we had some booms. Isn't it a bear when you start losing your 20/20 hind sight and you can't find your water? When your brown sugar gets hard put a piece of bread with it overnight. The bread will get hard but the sugar will get soft. I drank so much coffee in the 90s while working 2 to 2-1/2 shifts seven days a week, self employed but only 6 weeks backlog max. Feast and famine work load prevented hiring help so my wife and I worked long hours. When we had famine we couldn't afford help and when we had feast we had no time to train anyone. Yes, it was that bad and good. Another book that I intended to write 1 or 2 sentences. Yes, that is neat. Usually is. Thanks for another good video.

    Love it! Thanks again David! Your videos always make my week! ..Like the hat, and the neck knife!! 😍
    Great new invention there! You really are a genius for this stuff.. It's wonderful! .. I think many of us love bushcraft for the same reasons, it's a chance to recharge and decompress from the pressures of daily life .. In my case, it's those things, and that I've always been a 'nature kid'.. I spent all my free time as a child outdoors, in the woods, at the farm, wherever! Despite life's hurdles and obligations, the woods is where I end up when I can escape 😁 no place like it! Parks are nice, but they're not wild.. ❤️
    ..We have had a horrible drought here too this year, last year was BAD, this year was even worse ☹️ I lost more than 1/2 my plants with the watering bans & NO rain in months.. Then ironically we got 4 inches of SNOW last night .. There's busted tree chunks all over, so many still had their leaves the snow cracked them.. So, I completely sympathize over the dryness and the effects on our favorite woodlands because of it.. There's been SO many creatures that have disappeared as the plants withered and the water holes dried up.. I hate to say it, but all we can hope for is record snowfall to refill the basins for spring.. Not that I'm looking forward to record snow either 🙄 LOL .. I hope you get a lot of rain! Before January!!
    .. I've had trouble with RUclips's messaging (again!), so I sent a message as a response to a previous message to you, see if you can find it? 😁 lol
    Take care! Looking forward to the next ones! 💕

      Always great to hear that Ruth and I'm happy you liked it. Good way you have of describing Bushcraft. In a way, when we played in the woods as kids it was a form of pre Bushcraft. Thats so bad you was in a drought too, amazing the snow came! That wont be much of a hope here. We very rarely get snow here. Usually just a dusting. PM me when you can. Take care and Thanks for watching

That camp stove is cool, I bought a Trangia alcohol stove theis year and when I was ordering the site had this real nice looking gas stove much like the Coleman except It was from China and only cost $4.95 plus a $1.50 shipping so I got it. You the darn thing works real good for foreign. Ok, I've blabbed on. Your videos are just like what the fellow below said, Like we are right there with you enjoying the same things. Thank you Rob from Oregon

      Thanks Rob, I'm glad you liked it. I have seen a few of them knock offs and was wondering how well they worked. Sometimes when I film these, I feel like all my friends are in the camera! Thanks for watching

    Percolators just the ticket smells wonderful. My parents used condensed milk quite rich. Never tried the brown sugar though. Like your ring no lashing necessary. This weather really sucks '80's in November. I like the new Mora. atb Opal

      Oh yes, the smell and sound of a percolator is just plain wonderful! This was a first time deal for that tripod design and I think its a winner. This is also a first time for 84 to 87 degree Halloween weather! Take care and Thanks for watching Opal
