    To Ham Radio A2Z. All of the earlier videos (like this one) are still available.
    In video #12 -( • IC-7100 from A to Z #1... ) we learned how to connect the 7100 to your PC. This time we'll look at the settings and audio adjustments to do something useful with the connection. I'll be using WSJT-X as the example software for setting audio levels.

    Just a note for anyone else that runs into this. If you use "split mode = rig" in WSJT-X you run the risk of having your A freq USB-D but your B freq might be just USB. If your B freq is not set for USB-D then transmit will completely fail. I was pounding my head on the wall with that for longer than I would have liked. The alternative would be to use the "fake it" setting and this won't be a problem.

    Thanks for the videos on the 7100. They have been invaluable to me. If I select RIG in my settings, Split changes the frequency way out of the FT8 range, sometimes it changes bands to transmit. Not sure what I have wrong. If I set it to Fake it, it works fine.

      Hi Bobby. I haven’t played with WSJT-X in a while. I’m not sure why it is behaving that way. When I get a chance to try it out, I’ll let you know if I find anything.

      I have not found that with my IC-7100 using WSJT-X The frequency changes just as I expect it to - a kHz or so either way. Winlink works very well with the IC-7100 Not only does it change the band and frequency, but it also changes the IC-7100 to USB-D when you go to "open session"", and changes the frequency and mode back to where it was when you close the "open session" window, allowing seamless operation with no fiddling around. Incidently, for anyone who uses Winlink without a hardware modem, it is well worth installing and paying for the high speed version of VARA, which is by far the best software modem I have used, giving high data rates on unbelievably weak signals, and changing the data rate dynamically as signals fade in and out.

    Hello! I watched all your videos about IC7100. Thank you for taking the time to make them. Just a comment, Almost every mode has it's datamode. USB -> USB-D, FM->FM-D (Aprs for example), WFN (No data mode off course). I mention this because I was listening WFM commercial radio the first time I bought my radio and I wanted to set data mode while I was watching your video and there was no DATA option to set in the menu!! It will be available when you switch to the proper mode and band plan.

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  2 года назад +1

      Yes. You definitely need to be in a valid mode where you can transmit in order to select DATA. You'll also notice that in DV mode that DATA is replaced by GPS. The GPS option lets you select whether you want to send GPD DPRS data with your transmission or not. You can definitely send data in DStar mode, but it's not going to come in as audio through the USB port. It's a little different process.

    one of the best instructors and video on RUclips. Just a question on the Filter FL1 setup for FT8 is it setup for default and can that be changed?

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  2 года назад +1

      FL1 is fine and the default is probably fine. For WSJT-X, you want the filters in the radio set as wide as possible. The WSJT-X audio processing software takes care of it's own filtering and sorting out the signals. Trying to set the radio filters more narrow would actually hurt more than it would help.

    I love all of your vids! Question, does the 7100 have the ability to save and store different/various settings--like the 7300 does--so you can quickly/easily jump back and forth from digi modes to SSB, or do you have to go through and manually change/change-back each time??? Thanks!

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  2 года назад

      Hi Tim. Thank you for the kind words. You can press SET and go to the SD Card Menu. The Save Settings and Load Settings functions can be used to save and load different radio settings. The 7100 does not have “Presets” like the ones introduced in the recent IC-7300 firmware update.

    The reason that audio is transmitted between 1500 and 2000 hz is so there are no harmonics in the audio passband that is transmitted. The (second?) harmonic of 1500 hz is 3000, which would be filtered out and not put out on the air.
    It's easy to see when someone is transmitting below 1500 hz.

      In the SET mode menus there is a setting to turn Monitor OFF. It’s either in the Connectors or the Function sub-menu.

    I am having a devil of a time getting started with digital using USB connection. Almost every time I open the program the serial port connection fails and I have to play with the config to get it connected again. All the same settings are used but it's like I have to wake something up to get things working. Also am I going brain dead or is the manual missing a digital using USB connection section in the 'Full' menu?

      Hi Kelvin. It’s a great radio, but I’m afraid it doesn’t have that much capability. For logging you’ll have to use a computer with a logging program. With a computer connected, at least the radio will help fill in the band, mode and frequency.

    Hi Tom: Thanks for the video. I’m playing with my 7100 now. I’m trying to interface my phone to the radio. RX seems to work, but I can’t seem to TX. It looks like VOX doesn’t work on the Data2 jack. Is that correct? Maybe it works with the ACC plug? I do get audio only if I key the radio through the Data2 jack. No VOX.
    Thx de KB2MEN

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  Год назад +1

      Hmmmm… I’ve never tried VOX with the Data2 jack. I thought that VOX would work regardless of where the audio is coming from. I’m quite certain VOX will work with the Accessory connector, but I haven’t actually tried it. Maybe it’s time to do some experimenting.

    Hi Tom, just one question, what do you turn up in the icom 7100 menu to make more audio sound level (volume)to come out the usb port, what i think it is i have moved from 50% to 70%, but doesn't seem any louder hi...Fred g4vvq.

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  2 года назад

      Hi Fred. You should be looking in Set Mode under the Connectors sub-menu. The setting you want to change is ACC/USB AF Level. That setting changes audio output level for both the accessory connector and the USB output. You could also change the audio input level in the Windows settings for the USB audio input. I tend to leave the radio set at the 50% default and change the settings in Windows, but either way is fine. They both have the same effect.

    How you setup a data 2 socket on ic 7100

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  2 года назад

      Hi. What is it you are wanting to do? If you want to do AX.25 packet data you’ll need either a TNC or a sound card interface and TNC software for your computer. If you buy a commercial TNC, it should have basic instructions for connecting to a radio. You can find the pinout of the data-2 connector on page 18-2 of the Advanced Instructions manual.

  • @davemould4638
    @davemould4638 2 года назад

    I disagree with using WSJT as the example. The reason is this - FT8 and other modes of WSJT are usually used at low power (around 5W), while other data modes (e.g. SSTV) are not. This is why WSJT has its own power output slider, which you will not find on other digital programs. So my method is to set the audio output level to the radio using some other digital mode program, such as EasyPal or Winlink or an RTTY application etc. I've found that most PC programs have similar input and output levels so you do not need to adjust levels when changing between them. Then in WSJT, leave the radio and soundcard levels alone, and also leave the radio's power set to maximum (or your normal operating power), and adjust the output power for FT-8 by using the power slider of WSJT. In that way you do not have to adjust anything when switching between different data mode PC applications.

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  3 года назад +3

      Hi Tommy. In the settings, under the Radio tab there is an option on the right side of the screen labeled Mode. Make sure that either None or Data/Pkt is highlihted. If USB is highlighted, it will change your radio back to USB (not -D) every time it goes to transmit. If you set it to None, then WSJT won't do anything with the mode and you will need to make sure it is set to USB-D for every band. If you have it set to Data/Pkt and the radio type is set to IC-7100, then WSJT will switch your radio to USB-D regardless of what mode it was in.
