John Gielgud was so perfect for Prospero. He was a real magician himself! One of the most glorious, emotive voices to ever bring life to Shakespeare’s glorious verse!
A true master actor delivering the language with clarity allowing the words to enter into the ears of his audience to do its noble task of tingling our imaginations. John Gielgud !!
Now my charms are all o'erthrown, And what strength I have’s mine own, Which is most faint. Now, ’tis true, I must be here confined by you, [5] Or sent to Naples. Let me not, Since I have my dukedom got And pardoned the deceiver, dwell In this bare island by your spell, But release me from my bands [10] With the help of your good hands. Gentle breath of yours my sails Must fill, or else my project fails, Which was to please. Now I want Spirits to enforce, art to enchant, [15] And my ending is despair, Unless I be relieved by prayer, Which pierces so that it assaults Mercy itself and frees all faults. As you from crimes would pardoned be, [20] Let your indulgence set me free.
Like Shakespeare, Greenaway works on so many levels it boggles the mind. He is the living god of media, a rare muse. To engage his work is a rare charm, and when it touches you, you are forever changed. One of the truly finest moments from one of the finest films ever made, from one of the finest actors to grace the screen, from one of the finest plays to ever be born from pen and page.
Avital - The last time we were really together as father and daughter, you were sleeping on my chest as I watched this - and hopefully, you heard it still.
Insane. This really helps with my memorization for my class. I like this minimalist take on Prospero's mirror-image of Shakespeare. What film is it taken from?
Shakespeare saying goodbye to his audience.

Sir John Gielgud
Always good to see you.
The movie was made in 1991 which would've made Sir John 87. What a voice. He died in 2000 at age 96.
Thank you so much. This video helped me to recite this epilogue with ease at my college.
Magnificent.
A most powerful and magical ending! ❤
brilliant piece of acting. Bravo!
Does anyone else think that Prospero's final speech was William Shakespeare's final address to play writing?
No
Yes, loads of people - it's the totally standard and obvious interpretation of the speech.
Probably, possibly, maybe
Yes it is!!

Fantastic man😍
I have never seen John Gielgud in a role I didn't like.

the tempest...
I realize it’s been ten years, but the film in question is Prospero’s Books; Peter Greenaway’s artistic masterpiece of a Shakespearean adaptation.
This is simply stunning--incredible. Why the panning out with the shocking and unnecessary splash of water to ruin the effect at the end?
Yes
"The Tempest" was his last book¡¡
Cosa posso fare se non darti ragione?
Se conosci Greenaway e lo ami la tua vita e la visione di essa non puà far altro che cambiare.
IN MEGLIO!!!
Is this the Greenaway version?
