  • It's been a tough few weeks for losing musical legends and I was gutted to hear about the passing of Gentle Giant's Ray Shulman, who was my guest back in the first half of 2021. I asked John Galgano of IZZ to have a discussion about Ray as a musician and Gentle Giant's music in general. As John is (like Ray) a bassist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who plays in a band with his brother, as well as being a GG fan, I figured he was the perfect person to ask.

Thank you for honoring this great artist and human being. He along with his brother/s and band mates gave me some of the most enjoyed prog rock music over many many years. R.I.P. Ray.

Ray Shulman along with his brothers and boys in the band should be as recognized and iconic as any star that gets praised in Rolling Stone. GG goes toe to toe with the Beatles as far as I'm concerned! Thanks for this! Peace ❤ 🔥🔥

I’ll probably be crucified by Beatles fans but in my book GG surpasses The Beatles. Their music makes me freakin giddy with happiness. I love everything about them.

I started breaking into the GG understanding in 1975. I had been a Prog fan since 1971. King Crimson was that particular band that I had to work to understand. VDGG took much longer!
Friends of mine played 3 Friends, Power and the Glory, and In a Glass House. When Free Hand was released I bought it straight away.
In 1976, I bought my first "In a Glass House," in 1976 from some California importer. It arrived with a 30° bend in the record, thanks to USPS! So after 1 month of cinderblock pressing, The Runaway...Go!
In a Glass House has been my fave since 1976!
I was disappointed that GG did not return after 1980. However, I saw IZZ in 2004.
I will drop to see IZZ anytime!
I saw GG once. It is on the latest boxset.
    It is " Chester, 1977."
Widener University Missing Piece tour. The concert was held in a fieldhouse. GG made that Fieldhouse sound like an operahouse! Ray played his quadrophonic sound delivered violin- the sound moved so perfectly around that mausoleum of a place!
Chester , Pa was my birth place. I was born 5 months after Life magazine declared that the birth of Rock and Roll, July 5, 1955.
Also, a 1950's rock and roll artist that was huge in the UK , Bill Haley and the Comets, began in Chester, Pa!

I think one reason Ray's interview was watched so much more than Derek's is that Derek, being sorta the spokesman of the band, has been interviewed so many times, probably as much as all the others combined. But Ray just once or twice that I know of.

the beatles had a load of songs with strange time signature stuff going on: all you need is love, good morning, happiness is.. etc. they just make it sound simple.

I've been a prog fan my entire life, and even though I was big into Uriah Heep, Nektar, Yes, etc. For me as well, GG never found their way to me. Then Steven Wilson did the remixes, leading me to 3 year obsession devouring everything Gentle Giant. IZZ has been in my playlist for the last fifteen years, and as soon as I heard GG, I said, well now I know where they got their influence from. Same with Spock's Beard.

    Great talk...R.I.P. Ray.
(I would call the main groove of 'Down & Out' in 10/4, due to the phrasing, btw.)

I agree with Power and the Glory, being my favorite. It was also my introduction to GG, so hearing them for the first time, I knew they were something special, no one sounded like them {at that time, lol}.

    Time signatures are about danceability

With regard to time signatures, I'd just like to point out that there is nothing inherently "4/4", or any other time signature, about the human heartbeat. It's just a matter of how you are accustomed to grouping beats. It could just as easily be argued that 7/4 is the natural rhythm of the heart if we were taught to count it in that way. Great interview! Really enjoyed it.

I cant find anywhere that Ray ever sang lead on a song. We know Kerry was very involved vocally and they could all sing including Gary and John, but did Ray ever do any lead bits that were able to be heard clearly?
