_Free Hand_ and _In A Glass House_ are the pinnacle of GG's output, in my opinion. At 4:48 - love this bit of insight re overrehearsal, it really shows their deep musicianship.
I can still clearly remember the day that a close friend of mine, who was the engineer at Advision Studios asked me to help him destroy a large number of 8-track masters from their temperature and humidity controlled storage room. He had rigged up an 8-track machine so that we could listen to some of them before we took a razor blade to them. There were several Gentle Giant masters, and this was one of them. We listened to it all the way through, and solo'd many of the tracks to better hear what was going on. It's sad that the master recording of such a fantastic LP was lost - but apparently it had never been paid for by the record company, and Advision were within their rights to order it's destruction.
The music is brilliant, I feel inside out should have been on the radio. I'd love to hear a remix of the second album. I also liked the missing piece (maybe not betting they could do it) but what a band - the power and the glory made them popular, free hand took them into the main stream (as much as possible anyway)
I already pre-ordered my copy a good month or o ago and it's GREAT! news to see that Wilson is also going to be doing the surround mixes for Interview and Civilian too. I already have the 2012 4.1 mixes of Freehand and Interview and even though I enjoy them I know that Wilson's job on the mixes will be much better. It would have been nice if the original Quad mixes were included too and having got into all this stuff back in the 70's the only real thing that entices me to buy music these days is Multichannel recordings. And it is mostly of the music I loved all those years ago rather than buying anything new that's out there. Basically, because there is bugger all out there these days and hardly anything new really floats my boat.
@@MakeWeirdMusic It is indeed and considering it took all these years to come up with these new mixes just goes to show how lucky we are to be living in these times.
Finally Civilian will be available for a decent price! I hope they do all the albums in 5.1. In a glass house, Interview, missing piece and giant for a day. Obviously the first three only had limited songs available as multi track Tapes. I wonder if the others are available, and if so, why such a long time between releases?
There is a fully remixed debut album that came with the recently released boxset. The previously missing multi-tracks for that album were revealed by a fan who actually had them in his possession prior to the release of the Three Piece Suite.
Fantastic interview!!! I’m curious if In a Glass House is on the docket for a remix? We’re they able to find the master tapes for that one? Fingers crossed!
I would like to see a GG cover album with Mike Keneally on guitars vocals and keyboards, Patty Pershayla on Bass Mandolin Ukelele and lead vocals Joe Travers on Drums and Maybe Tommy Mars
Just spent a fortune on Unburied Treasure for the remixed albums and live cd’s. Now, 5 minutes later we have a supposed new and improved remix of Freehand. Why was this version not included in the box?
They weren't even being worked on back then. I believe SW had some spare time during the pandemic to remix some albums including the 3 GG albums we'll be subsequently getting...
@@MakeWeirdMusic it went beyond chords and into the realms of leaving strings open to emphasise the stuff you are picking. (As you can tell, I know very little about musical theory, but I can recognise when something funny is going on.)
Maybe I missed it, but was it mentioned why the other two original members--Gary Green and Kerry Minnear--were missing from this Zoom call? A bit ironic that the band is called Gentle Giant although they are MONSTROUS musicians and composers. A real singularity band.
IMO the main problem with the 2005 reissue was that whoever re-mastered it made it far too hot. If you look at the signal there's loads of clipping and unnecessary compression. Steven's new remix is far more dynamic, because he's allowed the transient peaks space to breath. It also helps that he's able to mix it all together digitally without any tape bounce-down issues causing excess noise to signal. That's why is sounds 'clearer' and 'more separated' Derek :) So there!
Just like the Beatles, great constructed and performed music will always be appreciated. During their heyday, Gentle Giant was considered too weird for the average rock-n-roller, but with time, many people(and their offspring) are starting to realize just what an amazing band G.G. was. It's too bad that they can't reunite for one live DVD performance, while they are still around...even get Phil back for a cameo...I know Gary has tried to keep the flame burning with Three Friends. Maybe the music is a bit too complicated for septuagenerians, but it would be greatly appreciated.
I got to see them live twice, but both times they were the opening band; once for Tull and once for Renaissance. Not to take anything away from those two great bands, but in both cases, for me personally, Gentle Giant was the more interesting band. Wish I could have seen them as headliners, playing as full set with encores.
It's flourishing because 1) it is damn good, and 2) maybe more and more people are fed up with hip-hop and trashy stuff like that, and crave the complexities of so many "prog" acts from the 70s.
There's a great discussion about modern hip-hop in the full interview, which I'm hoping to release this week. Ray and Mike have a very different opinion.
It's a sign of the music industry that bands like GG didn't get proper commercial support. Human and musical qualities of these artists count for nothing in this all-profit plague. The best example is the Hall of Shame. Things are BIG that should be small and many of them clap unrhythmically... . ..

Is this a true story?!
@@MakeWeirdMusic It most certainly is.
We used tape splicing razor blades to cut up about 50 extremely famous master recordings on that day.
Great Band. Great Album. Awesome
Thanks, Vitor
Free Hand was one of the very great albums of the 70's. Gentle Giant were phenomenal.
Agreed
The music is brilliant, I feel inside out should have been on the radio. I'd love to hear a remix of the second album. I also liked the missing piece (maybe not betting they could do it) but what a band - the power and the glory made them popular, free hand took them into the main stream (as much as possible anyway)
They should have had more radio airplay at the time. But what do I know? I'm only 41 haha
I Think this is very very special!
Me too.
@@MakeWeirdMusic We understand Each other!
It’s a good time to be a gentle giant fan
@@MakeWeirdMusic It is indeed and considering it took all these years to come up with these new mixes just goes to show how lucky we are to be living in these times.
Finally Civilian will be available for a decent price!
I hope they do all the albums in 5.1.
In a glass house, Interview, missing piece and giant for a day.
Obviously the first three only had limited songs available as multi track Tapes. I wonder if the others are available, and if so, why such a long time between releases?
I received an official message this morning: Civilian will be remastered, not remixed by Steven Wilson.
@@MakeWeirdMusic that's perfectly fine with me! I just want a copy that doesn't cost and arm and a leg
There is a fully remixed debut album that came with the recently released boxset. The previously missing multi-tracks for that album were revealed by a fan who actually had them in his possession prior to the release of the Three Piece Suite.
GG's best album! Good memories brings me back to 70's.
Right on
Fantastic interview!!! I’m curious if In a Glass House is on the docket for a remix? We’re they able to find the master tapes for that one? Fingers crossed!
Nope, they don't have the original multi-track. Oh well. :(
I'm in Awe...
Glad you enjoyed it.
Just want to say Hello, I love Gentle Giant , always been in my top 5 bands of all the bands.
Hello! Thanks for stopping by
Bless 🙏🙏❤❤❤
Thanks
Interview, Civilian, how's about The Missing Piece??
That's also coming!
"It's better than the original. " - Derek Shulman
Crazy, right?
Very excited for Civilian. That album needs a remix more than Free Hand IMO
I was mistaken about Civilian. It will not be remixed. Just remastered and released in the US.
@@MakeWeirdMusic ok. Probably not enough popular. Its a great album though
I would like to see a GG cover album with Mike Keneally on guitars vocals and keyboards, Patty Pershayla on Bass Mandolin Ukelele and lead vocals Joe Travers on Drums and Maybe Tommy Mars
Also Mr Weathers. What a thrill!
Yessir!
@14.52 I'm so glad somebody else thinks this
Are we getting Missing Piece and Giant For A Day remixes too?
Just spent a fortune on Unburied Treasure for the remixed albums and live cd’s. Now, 5 minutes later we have a supposed new and improved remix of Freehand. Why was this version not included in the box?
Because it..wasn't...finished?
They weren't even being worked on back then. I believe SW had some spare time during the pandemic to remix some albums including the 3 GG albums we'll be subsequently getting...
Genius!
Thanks for watching, Enzo
"Inside Out" helped me to learn to play the guitar. It's a fantastic song.
You are probably one of a dozen people to tell me that, graham!
It wasn't for a lack of trying. Kerry doesn't like being in videos and Gary didn't respond to the request.
Derek is right - Civilian is a great record!!!
I haven't listened in a long time
As Rick Beato has mentioned many times, before there was Pro Tools there were pros. GG were consummate pros.
They were incredible, weren't they? Thanks for watching
I got to see them live twice, but both times they were the opening band; once for Tull and once for Renaissance. Not to take anything away from those two great bands, but in both cases, for me personally, Gentle Giant was the more interesting band. Wish I could have seen them as headliners, playing as full set with encores.
Lucky you! Those must have been great shows. Thanks, Bob!
Now I kinda wanna hear Raymond's remix
Hadn't considered that, but I do wish they'd try a modern remix.
It's flourishing because 1) it is damn good, and 2) maybe more and more people are fed up with hip-hop and trashy stuff like that, and crave the complexities of so many "prog" acts from the 70s.
Its flourishing because a decent amount of people are finally waking up and realizing that they are/were the greatest band ever
There's a great discussion about modern hip-hop in the full interview, which I'm hoping to release this week. Ray and Mike have a very different opinion.
Where is Kerry Minnear?????
I begged him! Multiple times!
I'm looking at the album covers and I'm mystified... Where does the different hand come from?
They probably didn't have the original artwork, so they recreated it. It's very well done, if you ask me.
How anyone can say the new remix is better is beyond me.
You know what they say about opinions, Robert!
Ideally, compare the new mix to that of the original vinyl issue, played on a hight quality deck.
Yeah, my vinyl copy is a bit too worn to make a good comparison. The SW mix sounds really good, though.
@@MakeWeirdMusic Mine's still, excellent! 😄
GG were hilarious live, what with the gurning and all.
It's a sign of the music industry that bands like GG didn't get proper commercial support. Human and musical qualities of these artists count for nothing in this all-profit plague. The best example is the Hall of Shame. Things are BIG that should be small and many of them clap unrhythmically... . ..
