  • At Ketchikan we did the Bear Country Wildlife Excursion which takes you to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary just south of town. At this location your guides take you along a series of boardwalks raised above a wetlands area, full of salmon and therefore full of bears. Guides told us some days there are only a few bear out eating but we had a GREAT day and lost count there were so many! Babies and adults were visible, some right next to the boardwalks. What a great day!
    After the boardwalks we went to a Raptor Rehab Center where injured hawks, owls, and eagles are taken to live out their lives in captivity as they cannot survive in the wilderness any longer. Then we were taken to a local totem carvers workshop to see his current work of art. There is also a small gift shop and restrooms at the end.
    We HIGHLY recommend this tour!

    I’ve been to Ketchikan, and while it’s very beautiful, that constant rain would drive me insane

      I agree, but one of our guides on this excursion turns out to be from Taos New Mexico. She told us that she thought it would be hard but after a year, she got to loving it. She now lives up there full time rather than just for the summer tourist season. We ended up talking to her for about half hour there and it really did seem that most of the residents came up for seasonal work and fell in love with it.

    This was our last port stop for this trip! I think our next time to Alaska we will be doing land-based so we can spend longer at our favorite places. Just a reminder -- This was in Late AUGUST/Early SEPT. Bear are there to eat salmon. Other months the bear activity may be much lower as there aren't as many salmon traveling up stream to spawn.

    Really cool to watch the bears so close. Have to wonder what they're thinking, there's those humans staring at us again. That's why the cub dropped the fish twice, he was nervous. LOL
    Definitely a very wet place but a biologists dream.

      I think those bears really don't care that people are watching as long as we are quiet. Guides told us no talking or loud noises as it will scare them away then everyone will be mad. It worked well. The bears would look at us now and then but keep doing their thing. So very awesome!

    It’s nice that you went on an Alaskan Cruise. Be careful when you hike and camp in interior Alaska. We saw moose and bears. It’s a good idea to carry bear spray. I surely miss your videos of Dylan and beautiful New Mexico. Alaska has a raw beauty of its own. Went from Anchorage to Valdez to Delta Junction to North Pole to Fairbanks to Denali to Kesugi and Seward. Alaska is as beautiful as New Mexico. Those two are my favorite states for camping/hiking. Take care and have fun!

      Thank you! We will be getting back to camping and videos here in NM soon. We had a bit of a bump in the road (covid) but are better now and looking forward to fall in the mountains! Thanks again.

    nice tour! we did a similar but different, did the bird sanctuary but then it went other places, (this May 2023) I did a bear thing in another port but only saw one that was way out there, like a mile, I had a big zoom lens so I was one of the few that could actually see it. I'd love to have been at this place to see so many, but also we went when the salmon wasn't running so bad time of year. great job.

      Yes, you need to check out Ketchikan in late summer, July-Aug for best bear sittings. They told us there are more black bears in that county than humans!

    Hi folks,
    I’ll be in Ketchikan in a few weeks, your looks great. Did you pick it up on the ship or one of the tour companies at the port?
    Thanks

    • @RobinT-treehugger
      @RobinT-treehugger  Год назад +1

      it was a ship's excursions HOWEVER it is very season dependent. The bears are not out fishing for salmon if they are not running, and that is later in July-Aug. So if you are going to be there in July, you may find this excursion.

    can i please have the name of the tour operator? or did you just book through Carnival Cruise Lines (with their insane markups $$) ??

    • @RobinT-treehugger
      @RobinT-treehugger  Месяц назад

      We did book through Carnival, but there is an independent tour operator who does it also. The price was very close, not a huge difference as I recall.

    how long was the walk on this tour?

    • @RobinT-treehugger
      @RobinT-treehugger  11 месяцев назад

      This was over a mile, on wood plank boardwalk with stairs. It is not handicapped accessible and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with walking issues. It rains in Ketchikan almost daily, so it is wet also.

      We booked thru our cruise ship, but I know you can book the same tour privately. I would do a search for the Alaska Wildlife Sanctuary Ketchikan and see which companies do tours there. For us, it was the same price to do private as thru the ship. Enjoy.

    Has anyone gone in June and saw bears

    • @RobinT-treehugger
      @RobinT-treehugger  5 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately, the salmon aren't running in the streams until July, so the bears don't congregate around them. You might see a bear, but it won't be at these areas most likely.

      @RobinT-treehugger  Год назад

      Cool. It is the bear country wildlife expedition... that is what Carnival calls it, depends which cruise line does it most likely. It is by bus as they are right outside of Ketchikan at the wildlife habitat. Enjoy!

    • @RobinT-treehugger
      @RobinT-treehugger  Год назад

      I just realized you said you were going in May... don't think this type of excursion is offered then as the salmon aren't running so the bears are not gathering at the rivers to eat them. Sorry.

    • @RobinT-treehugger
      @RobinT-treehugger  Год назад

      Actually it is very controlled in order to make sure that the bear can do their own thing, feeding, etc. and the humans stay up on the walkways OUT of their way. Only a certain number of people are allowed in per day, also. In Ketchikan area there are more bear than humans especially during salmon run months.
