When I first started collecting NES games again a few years back, one of the first things I sought out was a complete set of the Black Box games. As primitive as many of them are, you can't deny their status as classics.
Man... the intro kills me every time.... "top five friday........TOP FIVE FRIDAY TONAAAAAAIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIITTTT" Love it, it's so catchy and dorky at the same time... masterpice! :-D
Good stuff Billy! Awesome topic. Maybe next week you can do top and bottom 6-10? Also, we need more farting and burping! It’s what made the Game Chasers famous!
Imagine a game where you use a robot to move circular disks into a pattern and don't even receive a reward for it. You do not control the robot directly, only through the professor on the television. The robot is slow and knocks things over a lot. This is a game you don't really play, but more of do.
When Billy started talking about Stack Up and paused for a minute, I seriously thought he was coming to tears. I was like "Good God. This game is so bad it affected him THAT much" 😂
I remember renting Stack Up back in the day without realizing that ROB was required, not like the rental place had ROB anyway. I played maybe 5-10 mins and was like, WTF is this? So I popped in Contra instead. What a waste of a rental weekend.
Urban Champion originated as a game and watch unit, called Boxing and that's why the controls are so weird and sluggish. I find that the game is fun for EXACTLY one round, and no further. Thank god I didn't buy it! By the way, if you're into both football and math, which member of the Breakfast Club does that make you?
Black box games from best to worst: Super Mario Bros. Excitebike Duck Hunt Mario Bros. Balloon Fight Donkey Kong Pro Wrestling Kung-Fu Wrecking Crew Hogan's Alley Wild Gunman Donkey Kong Jr. Clu Clu Land Ice Climber Pinball Slalom Popeye Gyromite Mach Rider Gumshoe Volleyball Tennis Donkey Kong 3 Golf Baseball Soccer Urban Champion Donkey Kong Jr. Math Stack-Up 10-Yard Fight
I think Excitebike, duck hunt should be over Golf lol... I mean... Golf!!! :) I remember selling one of my games for Golf, cuz that's what we did as kids.
This unrelated to the video but have to you thought about using sunglasses with a camera in them to game chase. I saw a few on Amazon for under a hundred.
The only change I would make is to DQ Super Mario Bros. Not because it is bad, it was the best game and technically a black box game but, it kinda stands in a category by itself. It would leave a space for another game. Great list though.
Great list! I would have put Urban Champion higher on the list, it's pretty terrible. Definitely above DK Jr. Math... Which is indeed a very, very bad game when you play in single player, but I found the 2-player part legit fun. And some of my favorites that didn't make the list are Clu Clu Land, Mario Bros, and Excitebike, but your choices were really good as well.
Awesome Video! My top 5 bad are: Urban Champion, Slalom, Clu Clu Land, Ice Climber, Donkey Kong 3. Top 5 Greats are: Super Mario Bros., Kung Fu, Pro Wrestling, Mario Bros. Arcade, and Hogans Alley. All the sports game are fun except for Slalom. Top favorite song of today is "Oh it's Friday Niiigggghhhht...Don't know what I'm going to do Tonight...." Best Song Ever! A+++
Stack-Up is an overcomplicated, painfully slow way of solving watered-down Tower of Hanoi puzzles, and an attempt to justify/cash in on the existence of Rob.
Mario Bros. I still boot this up on emulator at least twice a year just to satiate my nostalgic desires. What a beautiful game that is. Kung Fu is another VERY nostalgic game for me as well. The chip-tune "sound-effects"; the pixel-art Chinese-inspired architecture (a.k.a. the singular building you meander through) on your "adventure" to get your girl. I remember owning it along with Mario Bros.; Double Dragon; Excitebike; and TMNT, along with several others. If it sounds like I was spoiled; I'm super-crippled. So no taking part in sports or other extracurricular activities for me; videogames were my everything. And, even so, I still had a smaller library than some kids in my neighborhood. Them the breaks, I s'pose. Oh, I know this isn't a NES black-box game; but BACK TO THE FUTURE is one of my sewer games. I owned that as well and absolutely loathed it. Even with nostalgia glasses on; that game remains hard for me to digest. Bleh! AVGN was dead-on with his video review.
I guess you'd have to play it first hand which I have not but mack rider doesn't look bad watching it! I definitely will have to play it and see what I think then!
Christmas of 86' is when I got my NES . I had only discovered the NES a month or so before in a Kmart display . We didn't have cable TV yet so I never saw any commercials for it and didn't know anyone that had one at that point . Super Mario Bros came packed in and my parents also bought me Kung Fu . I hadn't played ANY video games since my 2600 at that point , so I thought that they were the greatest games in the world . What a leap from the 2600 . I remember studying the black box game poster that came with the system . I was never really into racing or driving games , but for some reason I really wanted Mach Rider . Never got it until this year . Not really impressed with it . Also remember my bestfriend at one point a few years later told me that he bought me a Nintendo game for my birthday . He didn't own an NES and by that point a lot of great 3rd party and 1st party games were out . I was so excited for my birthday sleepover . He bought me fucking Urban Champ . Didn't like it , but put on the fake happy face and made it through the night . I still own it though .
Good choices. It's tough to pick the 5 best games. SMB and Kung Fu are obvious choices but for the other positions I could also go for Donkey Kong Jr, Popeye, Excitebike, Pro Wrestling or even Clu Clu Land.
My personal favorites are Super Mario and Excitebike. No excitebike for you but that's cool we are still friends...i consider you a friend. After seeing NES Remix gameplay it makes me excited to revisit some of these games on my BRAND NEW! (previously used) Wii to the U. Happy Friday Bill E. Also I have a black belt in Kung fu...but I suck at the game so what gives?
@@marrvids I will sub to you because you said please or...pls. But I do not guarantee I will watch your videos and this is not to be rude. Good day to you.
Top 5 BEST NES Black Box Games... Popeye, Kung Fu, Balloon Fight, Clu Clu Land, Wrecking Crew. Donkey Kong Jr, Excitebike, Ice Climber, Pro Wrestling, Slalom, Super Mario Bros, Wild Gunman.... Is close to the list.
Is Zelda not a black box game due to color? Same for Metroid? I remember renting Clu Clu land after coming off of Super Mario Bros and being super disappointed because I had no idea what I was doing. It’s not on either list though, so maybe it’s actually ok?
You hate Ice Climber??? What kind of problem do you have? I mean, you can like or dislike whatever you want, but it is not one of the worst nes games. It is possibly one of the best.
It would be hilarious if at the end of humans existence, the last few seconds of this video survive, and only that in terms of video/audio/print. Then an alien civilization finds it and has only that. "What is Stack-Up?" (yes I know if this is the only thing it would probably be impossible for them to translate, but ffs it's a joke, relax!)
Before watching, I thought to myself "There is Super Mario Bros, then 28 other black box titles, then DKJ Math." But you had to remind me about Stack Up. You're the worst.
You're right, it's not a game. Not a game. We're talkin about PRACTICE. PRACTICE, MAN
no pro wrestling!? a winner is not you
Nah, he won.
Mach Rider was one the first games I bought for the NES in 1987. Loved the level making features.
I became so good at Mach rider. But years later i can't even get passed a basic level 🤷♀️
Still a great game
I really like tennis. I thought that was a pretty good black box game!
From 10:22 and onwards, Christopher Walken took over your body.
damn no Popeye
The competition is tough but I probably would've replaced Golf with Popeye.
my list would be
5.ice climber
4.popeye
3.donky Kong 3
2.wild gunmen
1.duck hunt

Awesome video, but I think almost everyone's clear cut top 3 black box games are Super Mario Bros, Excitebike and Kung Fu
1 Super Mario Bros.
2 Excitebike
3 Balloon Fight
4 Kung Fu
5 Golf
I still love 10 Yard Fight. Set the edge on the wide side of the field on defense and attack the wide side of the field on offense.
Yo yo yo this comment is to help with your stats! You're welcome!
Kung Fu, Excitebike and Ice Climber were a lot of fun!
I remember renting Stack Up back in the day without realizing that ROB was required, not like the rental place had ROB anyway. I played maybe 5-10 mins and was like, WTF is this? So I popped in Contra instead. What a waste of a rental weekend.
Stack-up is an art piece that reflects on how the TV can become the remote controller

Excitebike was a blast with its course creation and crazy crashes! Pretty sure my rider was paralyzed after my career was over...
This unrelated to the video but have to you thought about using sunglasses with a camera in them to game chase. I saw a few on Amazon for under a hundred.
Also, Stack Up is definitely not a game. It's a window covering. Because it's in the same tier as "Venetian Blinds" (Activision Anthology).
The only change I would make is to DQ Super Mario Bros. Not because it is bad, it was the best game and technically a black box game but, it kinda stands in a category by itself. It would leave a space for another game. Great list though.
Stack-Up makes Billy so sad. Please, someone help this poor man.

Always hyped to hear this song when it's friday nighhhhhht!
I used to really like Mach Rider as a kid so I have some nostalgia for it, that little pre-level jingle stuck with me. It's not a great game though.

This was posted Friday afternoon. Not night.
Damn you!! What's wrong with Mach Rider?! I AM a Mach Rider fan! There you heard someone. I'm ok with the rest tho

I don't think I'll ever stop thinking the opening song to be too cringy...
Surprised Pro Wrestling isn't in your top 5. It's the best wrestling game on the system. I'd also put Excitebike in my top 5 too. I agree with Golf.

Donkey Kong Jr, Excitebike, Ice Climber, Pro Wrestling, Slalom, Super Mario Bros, Wild Gunman.... Is close to the list.
solid list here. We unfortunately were some of the fools who bought 10 yard fight new. I'd put wrecking crew in my top five
Stack Up is our one true lord and savior
I like Mach Rider since it reminds me of Mad Max as well.
Good intro, my opinion but what I also think it correct. :))
they do have their charm these black box games :-D
I love the Game Chasers!!!
Port or not Donkey Kong is still a Black Box Nes game!
Aside from the Donkey Kong and Mario games, the only ones that are worth a shit are Kung Fu, Pinball and Excite Bike.
Is Zelda not a black box game due to color? Same for Metroid?
I remember renting Clu Clu land after coming off of Super Mario Bros and being super disappointed because I had no idea what I was doing. It’s not on either list though, so maybe it’s actually ok?
Hey, I liked Urban Legends, it was one of the better games in those 1-50 carts
For me my top 5 are Excitebike, Balloon Fight, Pro Wrestling, SMB and Popeye.
Urban Champion gave me so many headaches. Horrible hit detection
Kung fu better be on here lol
Great thanks
ExciteBike is a top 5!
*You are 100* % right
No Duck Hunt!?!?!?!
Ahahah you killed me in the end!
Before I watch I'm guessing Baseball. Damn worst baseball game on the nes. Mach Rider is my favorite.
I’ve never played Stack Up. I would’ve had Ice Climber in the bottom five. I absolutely hate that game.
You hate Ice Climber??? What kind of problem do you have? I mean, you can like or dislike whatever you want, but it is not one of the worst nes games. It is possibly one of the best.
Mach rider looks mode 7!
Awww, no Ice Climber? 🤓
No love for Excitebike?
I'm 30 n def right about super mario bros.
Wasn't Popeye a black box game?
Got my Nintenderrr, it was a good del (bargain in Billy speak).

Eeh, no Wrecking Crew? Top-3, easy!
Excitebike!!!

Billy, you left out Pro Wrestling. This is blasphemy, sir.
I dont think the intro is long enough smh
Before watching, I thought to myself "There is Super Mario Bros, then 28 other black box titles, then DKJ Math." But you had to remind me about Stack Up. You're the worst.
Metroid is from the black box era and should be in the top 5. So should Wrecking Crew, Excitebike, Pro Wrestling and SMB.
