So about the ending, I would like to add something. I think Clive and Joshua both lived. When Clive absorbed Ultima he gained Ultima's powers. Being that Ultima is a God who creates life I think its safe to assume Clive could have done the same thing so bringing someone back to life is not so far out of the realm. Also, maybe I was looking too hard or just wanted it to happen but it seemed like when Clive used the powers of the Phoenix to clean the blood and close the wound on Joshua there was a mixture of Ultima's blue power mixing with the Flames of the Phoenix. So I think Joshua got revived. Onto Clive's survival, his hand turned to stone due to the curse however for magik to stop existing would mean the end for the curse as well so when Clive tried to use the last bit of magik he could not because magik was being erased. So, either his hand turned back to normal or he just lost a hand. Finally I think the red light in the sky dying meant it was also the end of magik in Valisthea...Now you ready for this because this one is one hell of a stretch so Im just throwing an idea out there. Dion survived as well. How? because his knight dragoons do not take fall damage when they launch themselves 9999 miles in the air and come crashing down so Dion being the literally dragon that he is and the leader I believe it would not be out of the norm for him to be immune to fall damage. Plus we never saw him turn to stone and being that magik no longer exist then as long as the curse didn't completely take him over he might have survived. I loved this FF and its my GOTY 2023. Unless Spider-Man 2...
It's one of those things we'll never have a definitive answer to. It's left ambiguous on purpose to allow the player to draw up their own conclusions. I can see why you would draw that conclusion, and it's a very valid take to believe they somehow survived. Personally, I think it makes perfect sense for both Clive and Joshua to die during the final part of the game. The game plays around with the ideas of heritage and titles (Cid being passed down as an 'idea' as much as an actual moniker) so I could see Loresman Harpocrates writing 'Final Fantasy' in Joshuas name to honor Clive's memory as they all knew how much he meant to him, and how he would have wanted him to be remembered as a hero. Furthermore, while Ultima could do a lot of things, we don't know whether he could actually 'ressurect' in the truest sense of the word. He seemed very fearful of the blight and death in general. Clive and Joshua also talk about how even the Phoenix cannot truly ressurect but only recover from heavy injuries (I believe it's during the first foray into Waloed). The way I read the final scene is a window into the future of Valisthea - There is peace and flowers, life and humanity managed to survive and bounce back. There is no more magic or eikons to fight over and stigmatize, and all the suffering and strife is consigned to fairy tales that seem too incredible to have happened without embellishment. It's everything that Clive, Joshua, Cid, and the people at the hideout wanted - but it's not what we the viewer might have wanted.
@@mathiasknsgaardkristensen3396 I agree with everything you said 100% and that is why I started off with I think because it is open and I was probably looking to hard when Clive cleaned off Josh with the flames. The mixture of blue with the feathers falling down upon him looking like a phoenix down. I just wanted him to live, did he? Well its open so. The biggest confirmation we have is that the name is under Josh so that doesn’t necessarily mean he survived. Clive said during one of the side quest he would like to put the sword down and pick the pen up. We are getting two DLC and though I doubt its going to give us answers for the ending it might hint more or, maybe we will see something about Leviathan.
both of them living would completely undermine the entire story and their character progression. why would anyone give a single fuck about the story at all if there are no consequences? people die, get over it. stop coping; they're both dead and they deserve to be dead because their deaths are the pinnacle of their story. Jote is using Joshuas alias to write his memoirs like many people have done before. i understand being upset, but going "no no no they're both still alive" is stepping firmly into fanfic territory. Do you really think the writers would shit on their own story by removing all pathos? Why would you even want Joshua and Clives story to be undermined by doing a "gotcha" with their deaths? What could you even do with their story after this point that would even be interesting at all? Them bonding and dying IS the story.
@@Sneedmeister so aggressive. I see youve been enjoying the Symbiote suit as well. Spider-Man 2 will probably win game of the year. I both hate and love these kinds of endings, but im the same when it comes to an ending that doesnt really show exacly how it goes for everyone makes me so mad and stressed :D still, I wish they could release this game on pc so more can play it. Loved the game.
The Book at the end 'Final Fantasy by Joshua Rosfield" is open to interpretation. likely: Clive's healing act before exploding the final mother crystal at 46:57 allowed Joshua to live, and in turn allowed him to see the world Clive brought forth, one where Magic, Bearers, Crystals and Dominants do not exist, thus no segregation or racism from those orders. Joshua can write the book in Clive's honor. unlikely: Clive survives the final attack, though the curse takes much of him, and he lives on while Joshua doesn't, and like Cid, bears his name, writing the tale to give his brothers name more acclaim as a writer.
I’m glad I’m not going through my post-game depression alone. I thought FF15 was depressing but I got another punch in the face by Square Einx. I sincerely hope they decide to do multiple endings with DLCs because this ending made me cry waterfalls.
I've lost count how many times Sarah has said "LET THEM KISS" during a playthrough. It's become a catch phrase. At least this game delivered. As for the having a little brother thing… yeah. The end is kind of soul crushing.
This game destroyed me so royally I couldn't even turn on the PS5 for a week. There is DLC coming though, two in fact, but we're hoping one of them details Leviathan. I guess the main writer or someone specifically said it's intentionally open ended to the point where everyone is right and no one is wrong with their theories lol That frustrates me to absolutely NO end lol But I had to find comfort in knowing that, in the end, however many hundreds or thousands of years later, mankind survived and found its way without magic so no one died in vain. It's truly a bittersweet ending, for sure. Hopefully the next FF game will have a more solid ending that isn't so open lol Think the first time I played an FF game that had an open ending that royally ticked me off was FF7. The way it ended with that flash of Aerith and BOOM. Credits. No clue if the main party survived, no clue if Kalm survived and poor little Marlene survived. Nada. We just knew the planet survived with the 500 year flash forward post credit scene. OOOOHHHHHH I was fuming for months. Then AC came out and gave us an answer lol
I finally beat the game so I could watch this & man when I was watching the final scene I didn't cry but did feel bad. But when I watched it again here, a tear went down my face when Torgal howled which was heart breaking. I guess when I am so focused & on edge after a boss fight, some stuff in cut scene after a boss fight won't hit me until later because I tend to stay alert so it just blows pass me. This game ending hurt much more than the Zack scene. I Can't wait for the DLC for this game because they were cooking too hard with this game & not just cut scene wise but combat wise as well.

I feel the same as you with endings, Sarah. Control is a fantastic game with a very interesting world, but I ultimately have a negative opinion about it as a game overall because it had no real closure, much like Returnal and Quantum Break.
Who is to say Jill didn't have a child ... The author of the book could very well be them. Though a certain side quest and a DLC on the way gives more weight to who the author actually is
I'm fairly certain Clive survived and wrote the story himself. There are a few things that point to this being the case, but the main one is the quest line involving Harpocrates. He tells Clive to write his story after everything is over. This could have just been a little thing they said for no reason, but I highly doubt that. I see it as foreshadowing. I think Clive survived (you only really see him pass out) and went on to write his story using his brother's name as a tribute to him.
@@jeggitv so you don't think a random line in a random side quest is a "throw away line" but you DO think that clive literally turning to stone on the beach and the light dimming on Metia was......what exactly? They made the music sad and gave tons of visual cues to show Clive was dead, and you want to ignore all of that because some random side quest?
@Sneedmeister 1. The petrification doesn't even reach his forearm and slows down considerably during the cutscene 2. The lyrics of Moongazing are about a lover's return 3. Only Clive knew the "Final Fantasy" line, which the book is named 4. *Someone* had to write that damn book, and even if Joshua revived he got cooked in that firestorm Clive started 5. Clive's entire character arc is about *not* sacrificing himself, several characters tell him this and for him to die at the end completely invalidates his arc
So how i took the ending as, somehow joshua got off the floaty island and survived then was able to write ‘Final Fantasy’ before his real passing. Now so far out in the future in generations all the cast has passed and we see the reincarnations of Clive, Joshua & Torgal, with in this life they have a happy loving mother. Where’s jill? Idfk, i still would’ve loved the ending where they’re all back together after defeating ultima ~
When looking at most doomer comments here its a nice feeling to know about all the in-game hints and interview tidbits from game devs revealed in the Ultimania book. Makes it easier to digest the ending since there seems to be a decent chance of it not being the sad ending shown on the surface. Its confirmed to be open to interpretation, and its confirmed that the star fading does not 100% symbolize Clive's death. Jill only thought in that moment that her wish perhaps won't be granted - comment from the story writer. Also, another piece of the interview confirms Clive also ended the petrification curse together with magic. And the camera conveniently turned away. So make of it what you want. Truly a beautiful ending.
Clive used Ultima power to cancel magic and revived Joshua (that's why Clive used Phoenix to heal Joshua injuries before doing so). Joshua wrote the book to make Clive's story eternal
One trope that I will never get tired of is the main character talking shit to the main villain, breaking down exactly why they suck so hard, and deconstructing their entire motivation and all of their rationalizations.
I somehow liked it less AFTER i finished it. Like, once I had time to stop and think about it, I was like (all I did was fight non-stop and then play messenger for the past 4-6 hours hours. Not to be a downer.
Unfortunately the sales didn’t do particularly well since it was only on ps5 so the chances of a DLC are looking worse by the day. Which sucks because I love the game :(
@@SarahKey holy shit really? Sorry I’ve only seen negative press about how they were in crisis mode because the sales they projected were underwhelming. I assumed they were going to scrap everything.
Clive is definitely alive and there will be a true ending in rising tide dlc clive was missing the last eikon leviathan thats why he couldn’t handle ultima s powers but everything will change in the rising tide dlc
Ah yes, the Good old Final fight, against a White Skined with scarfs, Voiced by Harry Lloyd in a Place called origin, at least he didnt screamed „You will Taste despair“ Every few seconds °L° (And its like the complete opposite in terms of Battle, Being one of the best Final Bosses while Z is… Z)
My interpretation of the ending is that Clive survived long enough to write the book (a side quest for Harpocrates reveals that Clive wishes to become a writer after all is said and done), and chose to pen it in Joshuas name in order to honor his little brother, just as he took on Cids name to honor him. Clive is just too good for this world
what would the story have to gain from Clive being alive? the story would be shooting itself in the foot if it went "OOPS JK HES REALLY ALIVE WE WERE JUT FUCKING WITH YOU!!!!" do you really WANT a story that has fake-out deaths? why would you want that? do you not respect life enough to respect death?
I would really appreciate if Square would stop killing protagonist, I understand they don't wanna be asked to make sequels but damm last few games are pure tears.
@@Sneedmeister there's 14 games where the hero just keeps on living and doesn't make them less heroes, been a hero has absolutely nothing with dying at the end lol.
Honestly I wasn't much of a fan of this ending. Two FF games in a row where the main character sacrifices his life to restore a ruined world feels a little uninspired (not to mention all the other numerous similarities between both games). And FFXV did it better. That last talk/farewell at the camp fire justified that game's existence. Meanwhile in FFXVI I had spent so much time with sidequests I felt more invested in side characters than any of the main trio. Also the final scene (in universe) ended the entire franchise haha
@@PenguinsAreColdishI agree, that one hits me harder than whatever Clive sacrifices himself for. There were some aspects of XV and XVI that did better or less than the other of its parts, especially the cinematics and the story, even though the complete storyline of XV is scattered through tie-in medias while XVI's story don't.
Nothing fully confirms that Clive is dead though. There's more evidence of the opposite like he picked up the pen by the loresman to write the story and did it in Joshua's name like he did Cid. Clive is more likeable than Noctis plus this entry has the best Cid but agree to disagree.
@@SarahKey They take a boat to the treehouse and Torgal shows Clive stuff, its just before back to the origin quest, before you say good bye find Torgal in the hideaway and he takes you there

The only depression this game gave me is the fact that I wasted 70 dollars on this crap. 3. Only Clive knew the "Final Fantasy" line, which the book is named
4. *Someone* had to write that damn book, and even if Joshua revived he got cooked in that firestorm Clive started
5. Clive's entire character arc is about *not* sacrificing himself, several characters tell him this and for him to die at the end completely invalidates his arc
29:39 ok, this might be the most manliest cry ever 😢🗿
Props to Ben Starr.😢
So how i took the ending as, somehow joshua got off the floaty island and survived then was able to write ‘Final Fantasy’ before his real passing. Now so far out in the future in generations all the cast has passed and we see the reincarnations of Clive, Joshua & Torgal, with in this life they have a happy loving mother. Where’s jill? Idfk, i still would’ve loved the ending where they’re all back together after defeating ultima ~
Clive hears the voices of the people close to him, Dion and Clive barely know each other, Benedicta also could care less.
My theory is that Joshua lived after he got healed with ultima powers and wrote that book. it might seem like copium but kinda makes sense.
They explicitly state that it doesn't work like that.
2:36 THATS WHY HES THE GOAT! THE GOATTTTTTTT
40:39 Dude told him This is your Final Fantasy then punches a god in the face....haha how can that ever be beat
Clive used Ultima power to cancel magic and revived Joshua (that's why Clive used Phoenix to heal Joshua injuries before doing so). Joshua wrote the book to make Clive's story eternal
No, they both died and Jote is using Joshuas alias to publish his memoirs. Never heard of a ghost-writer?
One trope that I will never get tired of is the main character talking shit to the main villain, breaking down exactly why they suck so hard, and deconstructing their entire motivation and all of their rationalizations.
Torgal always get me. Always 😢
22:25
Suddenly Willam Dafoe
Dion would not be a voice of support for Clive as he only referred to him as Ifrit.
lolwut? thats like saying you don't love your Father because you call him "Dad" instead of his actual name.
That was just a fairy tale, written by Joshua Rosfield making FFXVI a real fairy tale. But all final fantasies are our Fairy Tales in our hearts :)
I somehow liked it less AFTER i finished it. Like, once I had time to stop and think about it, I was like (all I did was fight non-stop and then play messenger for the past 4-6 hours hours. Not to be a downer.
And Clive never broke his promise to Jill 😊
no copium here. Clive turned into stone(look at his hand and hair), he died, Joshua wrote the book, the end :)
hey sarah, do you ever plan to stream the dlcs, or have you played them already?
This game is so good. GOTY
Looking forward to DLC. 🥰
Unfortunately the sales didn’t do particularly well since it was only on ps5 so the chances of a DLC are looking worse by the day. Which sucks because I love the game :(
They already announced DLC my guy.
@@SarahKey holy shit really? Sorry I’ve only seen negative press about how they were in crisis mode because the sales they projected were underwhelming. I assumed they were going to scrap everything.
“Whoaaaaa…Space!”
Clive is definitely alive and there will be a true ending in rising tide dlc clive was missing the last eikon leviathan thats why he couldn’t handle ultima s powers but everything will change in the rising tide dlc
Ah yes, the Good old Final fight, against a White Skined with scarfs, Voiced by Harry Lloyd in a Place called origin, at least he didnt screamed „You will Taste despair“ Every few seconds °L°
(And its like the complete opposite in terms of Battle, Being one of the best Final Bosses while Z is… Z)
Fantastic
the 'finally some kissing' made me giggle like mad lmao
My interpretation of the ending is that Clive survived long enough to write the book (a side quest for Harpocrates reveals that Clive wishes to become a writer after all is said and done), and chose to pen it in Joshuas name in order to honor his little brother, just as he took on Cids name to honor him. Clive is just too good for this world
Clive didn't die, he just lost his power and lost his right arm, he still alive so don't worry
He died. He's the only one with eikon in him. It's why he's turning to stone as he dies. Also, it was his left hand that started petrifying. 😜
what would the story have to gain from Clive being alive? the story would be shooting itself in the foot if it went "OOPS JK HES REALLY ALIVE WE WERE JUT FUCKING WITH YOU!!!!"
do you really WANT a story that has fake-out deaths? why would you want that? do you not respect life enough to respect death?
I would really appreciate if Square would stop killing protagonist, I understand they don't wanna be asked to make sequels but damm last few games are pure tears.
The hell do you want? A Hero WANTS to die for his cause if thats the only way.
If you aren't willing to die for what you believe in you're not a Hero.
@@Sneedmeister there's 14 games where the hero just keeps on living and doesn't make them less heroes, been a hero has absolutely nothing with dying at the end lol.
The ending was so sad
Phoenix bursting through bahamut is so ff14 :)
Still a gaming community fumble on how Ben Starr didn’t win Voice actor of the year
What is post game depression I've never heard of such a thing
Square don't you dare to have bad ending in ff xvii...or find a way Clive lives in DLC...
Yeah "Final Fantasy" playing on piano in the background didn't help lol 😭
Honestly I wasn't much of a fan of this ending. Two FF games in a row where the main character sacrifices his life to restore a ruined world feels a little uninspired (not to mention all the other numerous similarities between both games). And FFXV did it better. That last talk/farewell at the camp fire justified that game's existence. Meanwhile in FFXVI I had spent so much time with sidequests I felt more invested in side characters than any of the main trio. Also the final scene (in universe) ended the entire franchise haha
right, the ff15 ending in comparison hit so much harder. helps the characters were actually likable in that game
Clive is more likeable than Noctis plus this entry has the best Cid but agree to disagree.
you missed the torgal island quest
Which one is that? I did most of the sidequests but not all are included in this series.
@@SarahKey They take a boat to the treehouse and Torgal shows Clive stuff, its just before back to the origin quest, before you say good bye find Torgal in the hideaway and he takes you there
@@zacatkinson3926 I'm sorry I just saw this! I did do that and it's in this video!
@@SarahKey Ok Maybe I missed it it then I just zip around on the slider thing
@@zacatkinson3926 Nah you're good. It was part of the short compilation part in the beginning so I can understand missing it!
Better story than ff 7 rebirth. More real. More more more emotion. Is a game for adults. They should put the gameplay of ff7 . Whatever wtf they never get one right.
God this game is so cruel
GreaT
Her commentary was so annoying in the beginning pausing every 10 seconds 🙄🤷♂️🤦♂️
😍😍😢😢😭😭😭😭👍🏻
Story was great bit the gameplay was mid and the sidequests were a crime agaibst gaming
it also gave me post game depression because of how disappointed i was in the game
The only depression this game gave me is the fact that I wasted 70 dollars on this crap. Absolutely hated it from it's lack of rpg mechanics, to its zero point in exploration, to its no challenge combat, to its boring and predictable story, to its MMO sidequests, to its boss battles that you watch 80% of the time instead of playing.
Unfortunate you felt that way. I loved it.
Terrible editing. Too much cut, sorry 😢
Did you read the beginning? Only the beginning portion is heavily cut. Honestly I spent so much time and effort on this video so this really hurt my feelings lmao.
go watch the vod then lil bro
How can you laugh at the sadest scene? worse reaction ever.
Wait what…???? I was sobbing for the entire ending bro
@@SarahKey52:55 it is clear whether you were laughing at the saddest scene or bot bro. it says a lot about you. Seek help
@@Ardalan01 Are you sure you aren't the one who needs to seek help? Can you not use context clues to understand human emotion? I straight up said "I'm struggling here" and laughed at what I said. I wasn't laughing at the game. I feel like that was incredibly obvious.
It’s a coping mechanism! People laugh sometimes when they cry, it’s a form of coping
